The creators here nailed college, with one exception, which became clear to me with this episode: how come there is only one member of the cast who drinks? I mean, it’s college: the time which is notorious for people drinking themselves into a coma over and over again. I don’t care about the minimum age in Japan being high: Japanese students have got to have found some ways around that, right? In any case, my biggest issue is that with this, the “drinks a lot” has become a stereotype, rather than an actual character trait, due to the main cast being portrayed so black and white.
Also, my memory on the first season is completely fuzzy: I really don’t remember much of it, but haven’t some things changed in the process? I mean, for example I cannot remember that the microbes actually gave classes on fermenting (which are really interesting, by the way). In any case, what also strikes me as a big difference is that the cast is much more fun to watch now, now that it doesn’t have to bother with introductions. It makes the characters more… down to earth.
This meanwhile was an arc for Hazuki to flesh her out, and I must say that the creators used her well, but also the rest of the cast worked quite well together. I’m just wondering where the creators plan to go with that arranged marriage stuff…
Rating: (Great) – (Note: I am going to think of something new for these ratings, I just don’t have the time for that right now)
There was “how sake is made” in season 1. It was the professor narrating with the little guys acting, iirc.
Im studying abroad in Japan right now and pretty much everybody drinks. Most of my friends are 18 or 19 and that doesn’t stop them at all (the legal drinking age is 20). In fact essentially no bars or any place that sells alcohol will even check IDs so its ridiculously easy to drink here underage.
The microbes teaching about bacteria happened in the OVA. They are Moyashimon shorts. I think it’s called the Microbe Theater and there are a total of four released.
oho CJ you in Undergrad or Post Grad? iam thinking of going for my MS in japan but i dunno if they even have English classes their or do i have to learn Japanese x,x
I’m an undergrad but my program is just a special program with the university I’m enrolled in in America. Its only a 7 month exchange program and all the classes are in Japanese. But I know certain colleges offer classes in english but I think its usually for undergrad. Maybe really big schools might offer a MS program in English but you’d have to research it.
I watched the first season recently and I’m finding the second season to be education overload. Though it’s still great to see all the microbes and their different personalities.
I do miss the prominence the microbes had in Tadayasu’s daily life in first season, but the build up then was on Tadayasu realising how important his ability/relationship with microbes is. It’s kind of like the microbes are becoming background designs now.
In the first season sake bar scene (in the presence of the Professor) the first-years all say that they can’t drink because they’re not drinking age yet. They’ll probably react differently when they’re not accompanying professors, but otherwise its only the senpais and the faculty who are drinking age at this point.
