So, how does Mouretsu Pirates decide to fill in its penultimate episode? Plot twists. Or should I say, character twists. This episode was full of twists about characters that went into completely different directions than what was hinted about them. So to summarize:
– Coolie is actually hot when she takes off her coat and glasses.
– The legendary chef had five sons, who all opened up their own places.
– Luca has been kidnapped and switched with an android.
– Kane has a body double with a spike of very twitchy hair.
– Ririka has been captured by that very theatrical pirate of last episode.
– Chiaki has apparently spoken some very praising words about Marika to her father.
I mean, for this show to pull all of this in one episode, let alone the penultimate. I really like their guts and it’s a great way to build up to the finale, especially considering how it has never done anything like this before. If anything, Mouretsu Pirates is a really varied series: every arc is different and yet it comes together so wonderfully.
Now, the big danger with all these plot twist is the classic “rushed ending”. Putting in too many plot threads for the final episode to actually resolve. With this, it’s clear that Mouretsu Pirates is going for a fast-paced ending, and these kinds of endings can vary greatly, from being really good to being really bad.
Rating: ** (Excellent)
Uhm, I thought Mouretsu was 26 episodes? So next episode will be the penultimate.
This was just the antepenultimate episode.
I don’t think Ririka has been “captured.” I believe Ironbeard is actually Gonzaemon, her purportedly deceased husband (Marika’s father). I never did buy him dying from “food posioning.” And the two of them are getting back together long enough to cover Marika’s back in the dustup to come.
She did seem to be manning the station on the ship and lying about her whereabouts. Remember she also recognised the stranger in the meeting a couple of episodes ago as well, likely one of his crew.
Damn, it’s a good ride so far…..I am with you, I hope they pull it off.
This show is great storytelling with the appearance and feel of fluff. It keeps confusing me that way –
Yeah, Ririka totally looked like she was First Mate on that ship –
That masked guy is marika’s father. besides surely Kane have a twin brother. Im not sure really, it’s just a speculation
Yawn… I stopped watching girls-in-space a long while ago.
Well this last arc is pretty interesting considering it’s an original arc. The first 3 arcs were pretty easy to follow since it was based off the first 3 volumes of the Mini-Skirt Pirates novels and I’ve only read up to half of the 3rd novel.
This last arc has me in suspense since I just don’t know what to expect. Director Sato seems to be pulling out all the stops though. I have some hope for episode 26.
Makes me wonder if they actually do greenlight a second season, would they discard this last original arc and proceed with volumes 4-8? Since I haven’t gotten that far in the novels I wonder if this original arc would even fit with the rest of the story. Sato seems to want to do a second season so we can only hope for a confirmation any time soon.
