Mirai Nikki – 16

For a while throughout this episode I thought “this is the Mirai Nikki that people have been looking forward to?” During the second half of the episode however, I understood. That was actually a pretty interesting way to use Yukiteru’s father. The show still is chockful of plotholes, though.

The big ones in this episode: Seventh challenging Yukiteru and Yuno to a fight, when they could just as easily just destroy two cell phones. It makes sense to hold onto them in order to manipulate them… but they never actually do that. Also, this really depends a lot on Yukiteru being both a wimp and an idiot. Right from the start it should be obvious that Yukiteru’s father doesn’t know about the fact that Yukiteru dies when his cell phone gets destroyed. Yukiteru forgets about this just until the moment when it’s too late.

Still, at this point I don’t count the plotholes of Mirai Nikki as flaws anymore. What’s much more important for this series is whether or not it’s entertaining and whether or not the characters get to show themselves off. And with that, Yukiter’s father worked really well here. And strangely enough, the thing I like about him the most is not what he added to Yukiteru, but rather his character himself. His ignorance is totally believable and that made him great to watch for the second half of the episode. Also, I liked Yuno again, mostly through her subtle appearances outside of the action scenes in this episode. It’s unbelievable how close she was to actually killing Yukiteru’s father.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. It’s not a plot hole they just really wanted beat them at their own terms. They do later acknolage that they could have just broke the phones but felt like it would be unfair.

  2. The anime has been so successful in showing the idiocy of Yukiteru that any plot hole due to Yukiteru being an moron is now no longer a plot hole to me. It is simply an idiot being an idiot.

  3. Much like how Fate/Zero goes on with their “chivalry” especially in fighting. Here’, it’s Marco and Ai’s “special love”.

  4. The ones who fit your comment are only Lancer and Saber. These mega idiots shouldn’t go to war in the first place, in war, the most cunning peope win, such as Emiya Kiritsugu and Kotomine Kirei.

The problem with Mirai Nikki is, 99% of the characters are stupid. I understand that this erotic couple want to win in their own areana that is love. But didn’t they won already during the fight at the mansion. There’s no need for another one, just break their cellphones right away this time.

Also, you shouldn’t put your own life and your couple’s life on the line over having fun boxing. You should have checked the contents of all four cellphones before confronting Yukiteru. There’s no that trademark “radio noise” during this episode, isn’t there? Which means, there’s no future alteration. Those cellphones should already predicted that Yuno would perform that amazing stunt and snatched back 1st and 2nd future diaries. It’s all happened in less than 15 minutes ever since they met up anyway. Of course, the excuse is easy as always, they are stupid.

  5. This episode had one of the first instances of Yuno trying to kill someone being used for comedic effect, and it succeeded. When Yuki saw that big chef’s knife in her hands, he talked her down, but then almost instinctively slipped poison into his dad’s tea? Yuno Being Yuno.

As for Seventh’s idea to challenge Yuki, there’s precedent for that just last week. Mar loves to puff up his chest and impress his lady. He’s more interested in entertaining her and himself; and if he simply kills the kids, the fun will be over.
