Magi – 11

A-1 really grabbed some good animators for this episode. The fight that showed the conclusion of last week’s episode had some really solid animation there. It lacked the emotional impact that last week had because it was just there to resolve things and wrap things up, and introduce this new tsundere princess character who is bound to be important later on. And it was good to look at. The soundtrack was also better than ever.

Then this episode came with its world building, that did make the impact I was looking for. So far the slavery has been fairly simple: it’s evil. This episode put some more depth to it by explaining why there was so much slavery in Balbadd to begin with, with the use simple macroeconomics. It’s definitely the start, but I’m still looking for this show to go further in exploring its characters like this.

This definitely was a good start, but I’m still missing something from Magi. I mean, it has the development of its characters, but it’s not enough as of yet. I can’t put my finger exactly on what I’m missing though, but this episode had a bit of it.
Rating: 5/8 (Great)

  1. Psgels, I too am missing something out of this show and I cant put my finger on it either. I thought that maybe it was its direction that it was taking being a very government involved plot that I wouldnt like. I especially found the last 4 episodes to be boring to watch and I almost considered dropping it. But here (for me, my opinion, dont hate) the princess saved the day! I love tsunderes so I’m all good there plus she has an awesome design and epic water powers. But I have noticed that the show has been going down hill after that amazing morgianna episode (which I keep talking about and really should stop hyping it up so much). I think this show would of been better suited to exploring dungeons and finding treasure along with the mentioned poverty/slavery rather than what their doing now. I was looking forward to seeing that judal guy from the op but last episode he just turned out to be a disappointment. oh well if the princess is in every episode til the last I’ll like (I know how bad that sounds so you dont have to tell me).

    1. Wow, how opinions vary. I agree that the Morgianna episode was good, but I also have enjoyed the last few episodes as well. 90% of the time I absolutely despise tsunderes, but I don’t know about the new princess yet. I don’t think she will be too bad since it seems like Sinbad is going to be the one to deal with her and he can handle her and she has trouble handling him unlike most protagonists thrown into a room with a tsundere.

I also thought this show would be more about traveling and going to dungeons, but I think this is interesting as well.

  2. On the subject of “something missing” – I’d say we’re missing uncertainty and the suspense that creates – as well as the “big enemy”.

Before Aladdin and Ugo were uber-strong and unbeatable, but now we have our cast facing a king with no morals without their most powerful person.

We also get a glimpse of what I presume is the final boss (though with the princess being tsundere for Sinbad, who knows?). That’s pretty good – it gives me a better sense of where this thing is heading.

^That’s my take on it anyhow.

  3. Mean while I am enyoeing this series. Is the best shounen out there except for meaby Hunter x Hunter, The series is more solid whit each chapter, building his world setting, combat system, history, protagonist.

    A very gratefull anime.

  4. Likewise, I thought it was a good episode but not at its best. When I read this chapter I felt a different type of connection with the characters (especially Alladin and Ugo) but the anime seemed to have not exhibited their connections a bit. I find the bgms of the anime lacking. Most of the time, when I watch anime I find the scenes more compelling with the right bgm used on it. A lot of scenes with alladin and Ugo were wasted. Anyway, I have to agree with them, I like the new kou princess even in the manga. And as people who are manga fans are saying, there are still better things coming for this anime. Right now, their very antagonists are 1-dimensional but there is more to the antagonists of this anime that meets the eye.

  5. Hanazawa voicing Ren is win. The anime is moving at a steady pace but I think you’ll get what you’re missing in the upcoming episodes… It may just be missing more epic shounen elements or something.

  6. I’d say the world-building is kinda weak, it talks about politics and economics and stuff like that, but it’s all very superficial(at this point at least). If it gets better then hurray~but if not, it’s still a decent show, the characters are enough to carry the show. I can’t say I like tsundere bratty impulsive abusive princess at all though.

  7. Its kind of too serious for what was announced as a relaxed adventure show.

In Zero No Tsukaima you don’t get speeches about the constitution and on.
