Lupin III – Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna – 09

So, this episode was nearly entirely dedicated to one big chase scene. It showed Mine Fujiko in a completely different state than usual, making Lupin the good guy to root for for once and making a very big change to the dynamic of this show. Like expected this episode properly starts the finale of this series, but I’m surprised that it’s not centered around the assholes who abused Mine Fujiko, but rather about her feelings themselves and how her past still haunts her.

The one thing I noticed with this series is that it isn’t the easiest series to blog. This series’ strength doesn’t exactly lie in its depth, but rather it’s style, and beyond that it’s just a really enjoyable adventure series that bothers to be different, but I don’t have as much to say about it compared to other series. So yeah, that’s why this entry is rather short.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. as much as i like this show, i wish the budget could be better (animation-wise). it really showed in this one. here’s hoping the finale will look as good as the 1st ep.

  2. I think if you look closely essentially shes ‘programmed’ and they are still controlling her life from the shadows. Her breaking out of that programming and making her own destiny will probably be the finale.

  3. Certainly the budget could be better, however I think the stylishness makes up for it. This version is good but I still like the goofiness of mamo and cagliostro more.

  4. @ martin and Kaiser Eoghan: I’m surprised that you remark the low budget. Maybe I’m missing something but to me this show has quite decent animation and in particular detailed and well-drawn backgrounds. I’d say it looks much better quality-wise than most other current shows (except Hyouka of course). The eye candy is the main reason it’s one of my favourites. If this series has a small budget then I’d say the creators are making excellent use of it!

    1. The main reason why I’m watching the show is because of its aesthetics; the style and art make it really stand out. But in terms of animation as in how frames of drawings relate to each other in motion it leaves a bit to be desired. I can sometimes tell the storyboard/animatics weren’t really agreeing at times with the animators constraints of time and money. I guess I’m just being greedy, I feel like it deserves a bigger budget.

  5. ahhh this was a great episode. A lot of beautiful shots, and framing.

In terms of style and aesthetics I think this series is by far the most mature and I feel like there’s lots to explore with the whole background of Mine and how it uses imagery music and sound to convey the dark side of the story.
