Letter Bee – 20

Oh, this is bad. This is not looking good. Take a look at the DVD-page of the official website. Especially the caption: テガミバチ DVD <全7巻>.

巻 (kan) means volume. 全 (zen) can mean “all”, “whole”, or “complete”. So yeah. Letter Bee is only going to consist out of seven volumes, standing for about 25 episode. Dammit Studio Pierrot. If you’re going to have the balls to drag this series on with a ton of filler, you’d better animate the entire series. At this point, there’s no hope for a second season: the series is nowhere near popular, and if Studio Pierrot wanted to drag on this series, they’d just throw in some extra fillers.

I’m getting very tired of this. If you’d ask me what I hate the most about anime, it’s not the crappy moe series, it’s not the endless teen-aged angst, and it neither is cardboard characters or badly developed characters. It’s the fact that so many series only plan to animate a part of their story with no intention to cover the rest of it if it’s not popular enough.

With a series as Guin Saga, I can forgive the creators: it was epic, and I had a lot of fun watching it. Letter Bee however… meh. The entire point of these fillers was to build up an atmosphere just for when the story gets good. It doesn’t make any sense if we’re never going to get to that point.

Be prepared to see this show dropped. I’ve lost my motivation for it now. It’s not even an issue of time: I would have gladly blogged this series if it took up 50 or more episodes. However, this… I fail to see the point of it.
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. YES !! At last, You dropped IT !!
I drop it long time ago(in ep12). because I begin to aware form the list of the episode’s name. It’s going to very wrong way.

I know it because this’s the few manga that I read before watched anime. and I intend to watch it’s because it can going to be epic story. But..BUT!! Instead It’s going to be ton of filler. What the heck is happened!?

I know..The theme of this series is “Tegami(Letter)” but from the many event that happened before ep12 It didn’t give the chance it to be “Nonsense Slice of life” anime like this at all. OK another meaning is..it didn’t born for this type.(“Where is Gauche !!??)

Unlike Kobato(You may boring to heard me say about this but OK..) another series that many people who read manga before say it’s filler too. But You know…After I watch anime and read manga after. I found anime is more interesting than manga.

Filler that they made is the best. It’s made character development for Kobato. She grow up to obvious unlike manga. and the filler that they made have creative story and sometime can make me cry.

In the last..It’s go to another way(= Story is unlike manga at all)Like FMA1.
although it didn’t like manga but it can make good story too. Why Letter bee didn’t try to made good filler like this hahaha+

  2. I attempted to watch the first episode of this, but the video died halfway through and I left it alone ever since. Considering your review of the episode from 2 weeks ago (the HORRID one), I’m glad I didn’t touch this series.

  3. Well quite often the anime is created to garner more sales for the manga. In the future if the manga sales are strong there could be a sequel or 2nd season.

But you always come across this issue with ongoing manga series. Either the anime will end before the story is over or it will continue with lots of filler.

  4. this is a big disappointment because for some reason, Letter Bee won my heart over when I read the manga, not because it’s childish and of it’s moe and very sappy moments, but because there is just something that makes it spark in a very geeky way to me. I don’t know how to explain it- technically it’s not that great of a series, and the anime has had it’s on and off moments, but the fact that the show will only stop at the point where we actually get to the main point (and the story line gets much better at this point, i swear) pisses me off. I was just WAITING for the whole Gauche-arc and now that we’ll barely get to see it..that makes me sad. I understand your reasoning for dropping it, and that does make me a bit sad, but I would have done the same in your place. You just can’t keep waiting for shows to expand and become amazing after such a long period of time. It just becomes a drag at one point.

Sayonara, Letter Bee. I’m still reading the manga though 😀

  5. Meh, I wouldnt be surprised if they pulled another series out when the manga’s done a bit more, since this series seems to have been making the characters more fleshed, it seems stupid to flesh them out and not take them anywhere

  6. So, they decide not to make a sequel if the show isn’t popular, and the show loses popularity because the studio is making fillers… seems like they are setting it up to fail.

  7. Certainly this series is not the first one which get this kind of treatment. So many series end as filler and never get second season because they aren’t popular enough

  8. AuroraFlame: Rurouni Kenshin comes to mind. If they only took a few seasons’ break and finished the series with the last manga arc. Producing a slew of fillers just “waiting” for the manga to end simply turns off the viewers.

  9. I feel your pain, there actually are enough arcs for them to have several options for stopping, but for some reason they seem to have gone with ending on the arc where, at the end, the main plot comes back into play. GAH, the material was already there, and what did they expect to happen with so many fillers?!? Fans of the manga haven’t been so hot on them (same for Kobato) and even new fans like yourself can tell that something is up. Really annoys the heck out of me here.

  10. Okay I really don’t get this. Why did they add fillers if the weren’t going to have another season?

*They have thus far animated up to chapter 12 of the manga.

*The manga has 36 chapters so far

*Since the manga is a 40 pager, a pacing of 1chapter/1ep is pretty good. (And is more or less the pace the manga-canon episodes were going).

*So they *now* have enough material, to animate 24 more episodes, without any filler, without any dragging.

It kind of seems to me that they were planning to animate more of it. I mean they added just enough fillers, so they have enough manga material for another full season. So maybe the show got low ratings or something? Because if they weren’t planning to do that, they could just go and animate manga chapters only. Actually now that I think of it, if they managed to fit 26 chapters in one season, that would be a very awesome place to stop, because a pretty major niche-centric arc ends there.

  11. So, you dropped Hidden God for Precure, just when the story started getting interesting. Now Letter be for what other girly anime? Do you blog already Kiruminzoo?

PS: i see Cobra the animation elsewhere here. Such a GAR anime doesn’t fit the blog’s mood anymore.

  12. holy sh** this anime is going in the wrong path, yet i cant find myself to hate it. There is like some element that is preventing me to hate this anime. opening & ending songs? character designs?, or just d main character?..or perhaps the setings)

  13. Solaris: um, sarcasm?

But yeah, that’s exactly the point: I don’t just blog one genre, I want to cover a wide variety of series.

As for Hidden God, I dropped it for the same reason as this one: it might get interesting, but it’s still got a spineless protagonist and it isn’t going to continue past episode 12.

  14. >Sarcasm? Yes 😛
I also like a wide variety of genres, don’t forget i was stranded here surfing for Fairy Musketter Akazukin ^^”

I beg your pardon but i’m pissed you’re dropping all the anime i like most, and are blogging series i actually am not interested one bit. I feel a certain dicergence in interests. Hope it’s a transitory issue. Sorry, that’s my bad, after all.

  15. Yeah, the thing is that while you might be reading an awesome manga with Letter Bee, I’m just watching an anime with an awesome premise that’s never going to be animated. That’s the part that pissed me off the most.

  16. What I didn’t like about you dropping Letter Bee (or any other series for that matter) is the fact that you started it without finishing it. Even if the series is still going the wrong way and defied each and every set of expectations that you had for the series, I’d at least wanted to know what are your final thoughts about the anime. I guess in the next few seasons I’d really would love to see you stick to the series until the end – even if they turned out disastrous. At least, you can dish out a 25/100 rating or something like that.

  17. Apologies for that, however it’s not like I’ve dropped this show completely: now that I’m at episode 20 I might as well finish it and write a review about it. I can understand that you also want to see some reviews about the bad series out there, but I hope that you do understand that that means that in order to do that I would have to force myself through watching a series that I really don’t like, and at this point I’d much rather focus at some of the gems that I haven’t seen yet.

  18. I agree with the phrase “I can’t push myself to watch the thing that I not like anymore” even if I watch half of it.(around ep12) I can dropped it easily for search other anime that better.
(One reason that…I don’t have much freetime Noooo…But now I have more freetime because I have just finished the final exam.)

Such as To aru majutsu no index or Kimi ni Todoke. I don’t understand why most people like those. I find it very slow.
Hmm..look like I so picky.but this is the way that I have. Although that anime looks girly like precure or looks anything else. If It’s good and fun. I can watch it to end.

  19. Aww, this post has absolutely no content relevant to the episode it’s supposedly about! XD

    It’s okay though, just saying…

  20. Hoiut: heh, the reason for that was that I actually dropped Letter Bee, quite quickly after making this post. Because of finding out the length of the series, I lost all motivation to continue covering it, only for the second season to get announced four days later. ^^;

  21. I would like you trusted me just a little more. Psgels. Didn’t i say this serie was awesome and suggested to endure the fillers once? Didn’t indeed turn out awesome for real?

(Actually i dropped it halfway cause the lack of time. I just recently marathoned it whole)

  22. Solaris: actually, my problem with the series at this point had nothing to do with its source material, but instead that the anime would never be able to get there. That second season announcement was one I really didn’t expect.
