Kurozuka – 03

Short Synopsis: Kurou suddenly finds himself in a strange neon-lighted city.
Highlights: Talk about a change of setting…
Overall Enjoyment Value: 6,5/10 (Interesting)
Well, so this series suddenly got a whole lot weirder with this episode. What started out as a rather extreme samurai-show suddenly turned into a post-apocalyptic amnesiac vampire action horror… thriller… something. Well, it’s definitely original. If I understood things correctly, then somehow Kurou has become an immortal being, and lived together with Kuromitsu for what seems like centuries, until the world got eventually nearly destroyed by a meteor and the nuclear(?) missiles that attempted to destroy these meteorites but failed. Then something happened that caused him to get separated from Kuromitsu and suffer from amnesia.

The bad guys haven’t changed, though, apart from the fact that they’ve become even more extreme than they already were, and have resorted to killing everything that’s in their path. I can understand that this is an action-series and all, but I do hope that the rest of the series will at least shed a bit more light into who the heck they are and what they’re after. I mean, it has to be pretty damn important if they’re still around, killing people.

I’m also wondering: what exactly do the Japanese find so fascinating about Vampires? It’s a bit of Western Folklore that seems to have caught on really well, with the result being tons of series that try to toss in some sort of vampire legend.

  1. Just a tiny suggestion, I think you should go back to your old rating system. 6.5 as a score is very jarring, thats me talking while knowing what it stands for (between a good and very good ?). Otherwise people who don’t know about your new rating system will immediately dismiss the episode as a failure, not giving it a chance.

  2. I read the manga right before this show aired. The first two episodes flowed better than the manga’s intro, and EVERYTHING is explained right at the end of the story. While I liked that everything is sorted out, that didn’t help the confusion that occurs during the rest of the story. Still, the manga was great and this series, despite cutting a few things out, look like it’ll be just as good.

  3. Just a comment: I do think the current rating system (with the qualifying adjective) is very good. People will get used to your rating system, and now if you rate something as 8,5 I will really be interested, whereas before I would dismiss it).

  4. Hi,
I enjoy your blog, but your rating system is confusing. Wouldn’t it be better if you use a grade scale system that is universal and everyone can agree upon? For example:
    A+ 90-100% Outstanding
    A 85-89% Excellent
    A- 80-84% Great
    B+ 76-79% Very Good
    B 72-75% Good
    B- 70-72% Good
    c+ 65-69% Satisfactory
    c 60-64% Average
    c- 55-59% Passable

    Cheers,
    Patrick

  5. eh?! since when was 55 % passable? when I was in school it was always FAIl

thats how it should b here,

    90-100%=A (above excellent)
    80-90=B Excellent
    70-80=C Average
    60-70=D less than average
    0-59=F=FAIL
