Kuragehime – 09

This was probably the funniest episode of the entire series. It’s not like a lot of new things happened, and it instead continued to develop things further. as a build-up, this was truly excellent. The portrayal of Shu who is consistently trying to get rid of that woman around him, but the point at which she found out that Shu was only a virgin really took the cake. I really have to applaud the creators for that scene.

As for Tsukimi: that’s going to be the biggest issue for the final two episodes. In this episode, she again spent most of her time sulking about Shu. Something NEEDS to happen to her now. And don’t get me wrong, her angst was quite good here: her feelings of just wanting to disappear were again very well portrayed and engaging. 11 episodes however is not the length where you can just pull this card over and over again if it’s not building up to anything.

Speaking of building up, Kuranosuke did get a great balance between build-up and actually doing something. This guy is constantly trying to pull Tsukimi out of her comfort zone and forcing her to not run away, and I also like how he was inspired by Tsukimi’s drawings. The final scene in this episode was also a nice touch.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Best scene of the episode: Kuranosuke’s dad and uncle in school girl outfit LOL

Anyway this anime as a whole has some of the best comedy around… I like the funny moments a lot more than the serious stuff actually

Not a fan of Tsukimi sulking every episode either, its just boring… Kuranosuke needs to just go ahead and kiss her or something

  2. You know, there are lots of common points between this story and Kimi wa Pet. I hadn’t noticed it until now… it was the scene where Shouko tells Shu to ‘fess up that he actually *likes* having an aggressive temptress like her forcing herself into his life that made me realize it.

The love quadrangles share the same parameters in both series. We have the heroine, the super serious older man who is her romantic interest, Kura=Momo (about 20 years old, beautiful and androgynous, has dated a hundred girls already, super experienced at sex, actually understands the heroine and knows all her secrets), and the slutty sexbomb who eventually steals the heroine’s man — leaving her free to fall into the other guy’s arms.

I think it’s clear now that Kura x Tsukimi will win the day. The morale of the story in Kuragehime looks like it’s shaping up to be something like this: “If you’re a shy introverted virgin, your ideal partner is a sexy, experienced, dominating figure who will force his/her way through your defenses and into your life whether you want it or not.” Hee hee. ^_~

  3. Nene has just described the Gothic romance genre. Except Seventies Gothic romance usually involved mysterious mansions and heroines getting hit over the head or having amnesia.

  4. I think this is one of the more interesting stories and it’s damn funny…well to me anyway. I would like to see a bit less sheer terror reactions but they make it work very well within the characters. Always lots of fun to watch.
