Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? – 05

As for choosing which Studio Deen series to blog this season, last week sealed the deal for me. What does Dragon Crisis do? A beach episode. What does Zombie do? GIANT FLYIONG WHALE! It’s really a shame for Dragon Crisis: it does have a pretty good execution. It’s just that the story is way too cliched.

Now, I am a fan of Studio Deen: whenever they’re good, they’re really good and whenever they’re imaginative, they’re really imaginative. Obviously that part of them is nowhere to be found in this season, but Zombie is still pretty good. I originally didn’t want to blog it because I’m already blogging two other comedies this season, but episode four showed that this show also delivers in the drama department.

Having said that though, this fifth episode was a step down, partially due to the ridiculous amounts of fanservice in it. The saving grace there was that at least the fanservice was diverse: it was not the same scenario repeated over and over like what most harems do, but the creators like to keep it at least a notch creative.

In the same way, the story is pretty cliched and this episode showed that this show also isn’t the best at combat between human-like creatures (the whale battle last episode was very good, though), but it’s the details here that are surprisingly creative, and the dialogue is surprisingly witty at times. Ayumu is quite likable with his nonchalance. For now, that’s enough to keep me interested, though this show WILL get very annoying if the rest of the episodes are going to be like this one.

In the same way, the drama was decent, but it in its turn did turn Haruna in a typical tsundere. Yes, this show is inconsistent, and I hope that the second half will make good use of this. There are only 12 episodes, after all.
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. dragon crisis never had what it takes to become one of the best this season anyway. i’ve seen many average animes, and dragon crisis is one of them.

Kore wa zombie to me is the biggest surprise this season. I really thought it would be one of those typical harem shows.

  2. Actually a really good show. Finds the right balance between echii, comedy and action which so many similar shows fail at. The comedy works, the girls are cute, the main guy is tolerable and it finds a pleasant mix between self-ridicule and drama. Everyone other than bitter haters of echii/harem should be able to enjoy this, imho.

  3. You do know that the whale battle was an anime original filler right?

First half of the episode was the actual story based on the manga, second half was just wtf filler all of a sudden.

They could have used the time last episode, instead of filler material, to tell more so they won’t have to end in a middle of a battle in this episode.

Seriously this episode is only crap because it only showed the dull parts, it cuts off at where the exciting stuff is to happen. Where as if they used their time more wisely they could have balanced it out, the quiet and action parts.

The manga did this way better, the quiet parts as one arc (or an episode if adapted to anime), the battle in another, and the end of the battle in another.

  4. Yay! I really couldn’t accept the idea of Dragon Crisis being better than this… because it’s so untrue. Mwahahahhaa! (I don’t really hate Dragon Crisis, but compare to Zombie, Zombie’s just hell better, hehe)

  5. Ohoh, didn’t the main lead walk in the naked girl room too as a usual clichè? This calls for another sudden drop.

  6. The abundance of cliches doesn’t really matter as long as the core story can retain a certain charm and focus.

  7. Nice point, Houlgrave, so why that very same rule is valid for a show and not for another then? I would call it lack of coherence.

  8. Solaris: yeah yeah, I get it. You don’t need to keep reminding me.

I dislike fanservice. Zombie at this point has enough to make up for it and even though it used a few overused cliches it’s nothing major yet (emphasis on yet). That’s different from the way in which Index has been using the same cliched situation over and over again. I mean, doing this once is fine and all, but it feels like just about every episode of Index can’t end without someone running into someone changing.

But yeah, with the right execution this would have been okay, but overall the arcs from Index just haven’t been as interesting to me as in the first season, and the same goes for the characters. The fanservice really isn’t the only reason why I’m annoyed with index!

  9. You’d also drop Yumekui Merry and Dragon Crisis for that very same reason. And 90% of anime with those XD. Uhm and Onichan no koto didn’t have such kind of fanservice (more about the opposite) so i think it’s allright.

Don’t worry i’m not going to advertise Index anymore. I give up. I’m just pointing out incoherence …

  10. I think you guys are confusing tongue-in-cheek parody with cliched tropes. Psgels, you were complaining about Haruna becoming typical tsundere, but the main character noticed and said, “What kind of a Gal Game is this girl from?” Meaning the creators were poking fun of typical tsundere characters.
