Agh! Stupid laptop! I was nearly done typing up the review for this movie, and then it crashed, taking forever to start up again. I don’t feel like writing it up entirely again, so here is a crash review on Goro Miyazaki’s Kokuriko zaka Kara. There also isn’t going to be a rating table this time, because if that’s longer than the actual review it would defeat its entire purpose.
This felt real! I mean, for a long time I wasn’t sure where this movie was going, but at the ending everything fell on its place and this was a huge improvement over Tales of the Earthsea’s Deus ex Machina ending. The creators created a very interesting movie here with very restrained drama. No overacting whatsoever, even for movie standards. Goro Miyazaki is completely different from his father and he definitely fits quiet drama better, which is probably why he put so much of that into Tales of the Earthsea.
Suggestions:
– Mai Mai Miracle
– Whisper of the Heart
– Chocchan’s Story
It really reminded me of “Ocean Weaves” aka “I Can Hear the Sea”, one of the earlier Ghibli works. It was a nice break from fantasy.
Yes. I agree with you that quiet drama definitely suits Goro better than action.

This is a saving point for Goro. It’s described in one word: Genuine. I don’t know if it’s Goro’s doing or his Papa’s magical help, but it’s helluva lot better <3. I'm glad they didn't make it into a cliche melodrama either. I wouldn't mind if he perfected Hayao's way of portraying magic, flight and his overall GREEN vibe. I love both fantastical and down to the earth Ghiblis <3.
totally agree on the google documents solution, since it auto-saves your work every few seconds. I would love to see a full review of this film if you miraculously have the time.

I do not agree that this movie was genuine or restrained. What good is restrained drama and acting when the setting and message of the movie are asinine and self-sentimental about the past and history and totally unconcerned with challenging the status quo? I found this movie to be plastic, saccharine, and watchable only as a comedy. Art that does not challenge or aspire is nothing but a plastic product for mass consumption.
