Kimi ni Todoke – 04

I’m not exactly happy with this episode. It was all angst, angst and more angst based on a misunderstanding, and I feel like the creators were really forcing it in order to get as much drama as possible. Wasn’t this supposed to be a very simple romance? When I think of simple romances, I think of Sasameki Koto, not this kind of series in which the creators try to create as much misunderstandings between the lead characters as possible.

Yano and Yoshida, overhearing Sawako talking is classic romantic fodder. Instead of letting these romances play out naturally, the creators just had to drag on these misunderstandings, hadn’t they? It would have been fine if this was just a short misunderstanding, but the creators were dragging it on for way too long. Angst isn’t necessarily bad, I really liked how Bokura ga Ita did it, but this episode just felt forced and pointless.

One thing I do like more and more was that teacher and his crazy midget theories about Sawako. He’s getting funnier with every episode. But seriously though, I hope that the rest of this series is going to be different from this episode. There definitely is potential: even though Kazehaya is rather dull, Sawako, Yano and Yoshida are nicely characterized. Just not in this episode.
Rating: – (Disappointing)

  1. This arc really was the low point in the manga as well so far, which is why I’m gonna wait till it’s complete before watching any more of this show. I just want to get it over with as quickly as possible. Misunderstandings as a plot device to add drama are so boring. 😡

  2. Yep my worries have been confirmed… The show just took a dive with this episode… I HATE this kind of stuff, the way they just kept misunderstanding each other

And wtf Sawako? HOW ABOUT BEING MORE CLEAR IN WHAT YOU SAY? Ugh, if I get another episode of this Kimi no todoke will lose its 1st place on my fall anime top

  3. I think this part would’ve been this bad if it wasn’t divided into 2 episodes. It’s like they forced this one to have a cliffhanger.

But how things ended had been sweet. ^^

  4. gah. I am pissed that they stretched this to 2 episodes. The manga was a bit over angsty at this point, but no where near what is in the anime. There is no reason to stretch it out except to try to artificially make some sort of a cliffhanger.

The entire episode starts and ends in less than a 24 hour period. *sigh*

At least this is the most angsty part of the series until the ‘brother’ thing happens.

  5. Thanks for spoiling asshole.
Are you implying that kazehaya is sawakos brother?
watch your fucking words. now everyone who reads your sentence is riddling, about the meaning of it

  6. @Houlgrave

I hope you realize the irony of what you just said… Youre the one attacking other peoples tastes, maybe YOU should expand your own

Im watching just about all the non-fanservice shows this fall, and its not my fault a romance show happens to be the best… Last season, Phantom took that spot, followed by Tokyo Magnitude… What does that tell you about my taste?^^

Too bad the teenage angst is about to ruin another great shoujo

  7. Jesus, man. Saying ‘Brother’ could mean a million different things. He didn’t spoil anything. Calm the eff down.

  8. I don’t really consider a simple misunderstanding like this angst. While I don’t really like this type of drama either, I am sure it will be solved in the next episode and the characters will grow closer from the experience. And perhaps Sawako will learn a valuable lesson from this misunderstanding, we can hope.

Also @ Angry you are certainly jumping to conclusions because someone said the word brother.

  9. Looks like a road bump to me. Some people were complaining there wasn’t enough drama. I agree with Kim, it will probably be over soon.

  10. I didn’t really like this episode either, but I’ll play devil’s advocate and say that it could have been a lot worse. Yano and Yoshida could have been shown as typical stupid friends who believe any dumb rumor that comes around.

As for teenage angst ruining a show, I’d say that is only the case if the characters don’t learn from their experiences and the same thing happens again.

  11. I’m disappointed that the misunderstanding is dragging on to the next episode. I was really excited when the first 3 episode cover so much ground. I hope episode 5 will be quick with the misunderstanding.

  13. I really liked this episode. You want to be happy, have someone pat you on the back every day? That’s fine, let me know if you ever find a place like that in the real world.

  14. Yeah, I hated this part in the manga, too. It’s a weird nose-dive that happens very early on and lasts for too many chapters, therefore I strongly hope I.G. does not linger on this arc. If they run over it quickly and go to the stuff afterwards, my respect for them will double.

  15. Any series that uses misunderstanding as a plot device always tend to make me cringe. I know, I just want everyone to be happy with no conflict at all… it’s just these things are so painful to watch (poor Sawako). But it’s not all that bad, at least it develops Yano and Yoshida’s character a bit more and reflects how much they value Sawako as a person and as a friend.

And also, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine why some people would rank this as their top. 1 show of the fall season. I rarely ever watch shojo-based series, but Kimi ni Todoke manages to get me hooked. I really love Sawako’s character; you can really relate to her!

  16. Having watched the episode, I can say I don’t think this is too angsty at all. Sawako has never had friends before now and is dealing with a lot of the natural “burdens” of friendship that she does not know how to deal with.

This obviously isn’t simply a case of a wacky misunderstanding. Sawako, towards the end, finds out there’s some BS about rumors going around. I believe she doesn’t clear up the misunderstanding on purpose because it’s more important to keep the people she loves AWAY from her socially tainted misfit self than it is to clear the air. In her twisted thinking, it’s good if they think she started the rumor because Sawako knows these are nice people who, if she told them the truth, would be her friends even if it meant social ruination. And if that’s too angsty, at least it’s a realistic thing about not wanting to inadvertently hurt your friends, not a simple misunderstanding.

I mean, it’s all in there, right? Right?
