Shounen series on average have more female fanservice than male, particularly the blatant one. And here you have this series, in which a bunch of oiled up muscular men climb a giant pillar by using only their fingers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shounen series with so many yaoi-references…
Anyway, the training arc. Jojo had 33 days to train, at the end of this episode there are only 7 of them left. This was not the best Jojo episode, but as far as training episodes go it again was crazy compared to its peers. Most training arcs start of slow, only to find a major challenge at the end. This episode already threw the characters into a giant death trap. At least it doesn’t take its time as usual, although the end of the episode did not conclude this training arc…
Particularly intersting in this episode was everything that this show did with liquids. Especially that blast of oil was really creative, however what this episode failed to explain was why on earth it was all important. Again, what would have worked was a simple training episode. It rather braks up the momentum for this series to have it last longer.
Rating: 4.5/8 (Good)
Don’t worry, it’s the end of the training. Can’t remember if there was any training at all in the next chapters but even if so then they should only take a few scenes since we also see the fight VS AC/DC in the PV already.
jojo doesn’t have 7 days to train. jojo has seven days left to: train, track down both AC/DC and wham, beat them both, and acquire their rings.
If you were to give it such a low scorem you could at least mention the horribad animation
lols, it took you 16 episodes to notice the animation isn’t fluid and refined .. wow .. it isn’t horribad by any means .. but that’s just a natural result of the original manga art-style and character designs they are trying to animate here .. which are very hard to animate in a way that captures the feel of the manga.
The older Jojo OVA had better animation but it lacked the impact the manga had .. which this show has in spades.
I knew the animation was bad all the way, but this episode kicked it up further. Psychedelic colors doesn’t make up for little to no movement.
Some tend to call that minimalistic animation, and given the art-style it’s understandable why they went for that .. it’s isn’t bad or jerky animation by any means .. big difference .. the overall result is still a show that’s beautiful to look at even if the animation is minimalistic which is completely different from messed up or jerky/wrong animation that looks ugly.
It would be bara not yaoi. I dont see any young bishonen skinny boys anywhere here, and joseph doesnt look like a girl even when crossdressing. sadly, even with all the hard gay tendencies everywhere, turns out no one is actually gay.
oil is just more of a bitch comparing to water. heavy viscosity, high heat capacity, and nonpolar as hell. hamon screws around with sunlight waves and heat, both which dont really do well with oil. ah what am i saying… in short oil’s just more of a bitch to deal with than water, so like a hadicap.
I’d call this an overdose of manliness .. and i know that too much of this and it teeters on the verge of Shonen-ai and Yaoi (and by the way not all Yaoi shows involved young bishonen skinny boys, some old-school Yaoi shows had muscle bound dudes like the ones here .. and don’t ask how i know XD) .. but considering everything is extreme in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure i’m not surprised there is this overdose of flamboyant manliness nor i am disturbed by it XD
I don’t follow this series, but just want to ask;
Does anyone else get the urge to listen to 70’s disco or 80’s glam rock whenever they see the screenshots?
The show very much acknowledges it’s old school roots but also the author incorporates 70s, 80s, and even contemporary rock groups into the manga as characters
I thought the upside cup bit at the beginning and end of the episode explained why the pillar climb was necessary, especially for Joseph. Maybe it wasn’t emphasized enough, or was that lost with all of the innuendo that was going on? I must be really slow BTW because I didn’t even think about any sexual connotations at all until I read your reflection of the episode. Then again, I could be immune to it since the Pillar Men walk around in scantly clad loincloths and I think they might be great antagonists.
Next episode is ACDC. Woot woot.
Someone told me Hirohiko Aki was a big fan of Voguing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voguing
Which I take to explain all the dramatic posing going on.
More female fan service than male?
Watch Toriko, the whole thing is disguised homosexual harem comedy.
Maybe a weaker episode than usual but still fun to watch. When you think about it Jonathan learned from Zeppeli and by himself a lot during fights so I think this series put more emphasis on the actual battles than on the training.
Can’t wait for next week!
P.S – Yaoi? only if you look for it but personally I don’t think so.
What? Yaoi references? I’m sorry psgels I just don’t see it
Once more strong episode. Yaoi or whatever references, its still awesome. This episode prartically destroys every single training arc from other shounens like dbz, naruto, bleach.
What’s really sad is that Jojo’s manga came out before any of these shows.
No worries. Starting next episode we’re back on the Adventure-train, continuing all the way to the end of Battle Tendency. As a long-time Jojo’s fan, I completely agree that this is the weakest episode yet, but, well, it’s a training episode. Those are hard to make compelling.
