Just… what the hell, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Here I was thinking that this would quietly start off the next arc and another over the top clash between Jojo and Dio, and here they come and pull this episode. In just 20 minutes they go over 9000 again with this bizarre talking head of Dio, only to kill off the two most important characters in the series. What other shounen series does that?
This show really lives up to its name. What I especially like here is how helpless Jojo was: he was instantly disabled, hardly being able to use his ripple, and most of this episode was Dio monologueing about something, or zombies being evil. What a contrast with the previous episodes. Dio by the way was hilarious as talking head. The way in which he also used his veins as a weapon… how did they come up with that idea?
And then there is that zombie that on its own made that ship blow up, Elina who survived in the bomb-proof coffin that Dio brought on board both carrying a random child and being pregnant, there was just so much awesome stuff going on in this episode. I can only imagine how many chapters this part took, which makes it even more amazing that the creators managed to condense it to just 20 minutes. I really wonder what would have happened if David Production were handed the rights to remake Bleach ten years from now… it probably would not be as awesome as this series, but most definitely much more bearable than the normal Bleach series.
Rating: 6/8 (Awesome)
Yeah it was a good episode, but for me it lacked something… don’t know what, but like you I loved the ending.
I’m super excited about what’s next because I’ve been told that the upcoming arcs are even better.
WRYYYYYYY!!!!!
Since you were curious, I checked and this episode covers the last few pages of chapter 41 all the way through to the end of 44, which was a big 2 page shot of the character’s heads over the water, just like the anime used.
All in all, I think the anime is better than the manga for this particular section. I think because they were able to look at later JJBA parts and help bring more of the later weirdness to Phantom Blood, which, in all honesty, it lacks compared to what comes later. Plus, Dio’s VA is amazing.
The last seconds with Roundabout starting (used awesomely as usual) as it creeps into a cave to reveal a strange man in a pillar, lightly teasing us for Battle Tendency…good stuff. I am excited.
You forgot to mention Speedwagon breaking the mask in a cool way as if being the hero of the show and the coffin saying the WRYYY to the worker’s ear. I really laughed at that.
I found interesting how Jojo managed to make a ripple with his lifeforce to make the zombie do what he wanted, but doing it in a kind of intiutive way, as he really didn’t comprehend what he had exactly done and why he had suddenly lost the rest of his strength. I loved the chapter and also liked how the coffin made to be openable from inside by Dio’s group was the way to save Erina.
Jojo is separated into a few different arcs based on the main character at that point in the series, to my knowledge. I’ve only read about 150 chapters or so, somewhere in the middle (and indeed, it gets far better–at least, up to that point in the story, of which I don’t know where exactly that point is, so I can’t say anything about it).
I just hope they can do something more with this anime. It’d be a shame to end it so short…
My guess is they plan to adapt JoJo all the way through Stardust Crusaders. At that point, depending on how the Blu-Rays are selling, they’ll start adapting later arcs. 😀
I believe that they annouced that Jojo would be a 9-DVD/Blu-Ray series before it even started airing. It’d be nice if it went beyond Battle Tendency, but I kind of doubt that.
Well, how many episodes are we looking at per DVD?
