High School of the Dead – 05

Well, yeah. There isn’t much to say about this episode, really. It was clearly building up to that one fight scene at the end, and while nicely animated, this episode lacked the atmosphere of the previous episodes. We’re also introduced to a new major character, who turns out to be one of the best snipers of the country who just happens to be a childhood friend of the nurse.

Most of all, this episode was used for the background of the different characters, most notably the people who remained on the bus and who weren’t hypnotized by that psycho teacher. It’s not the most exciting episode because of that, but it’s good to see that we finally get to see for exactly what kinds of relatives they’re worried. Now, all that’s left is for the rest of the episodes to actually use this.

The one major event was that psycho teacher was finally ditched, which definitely is a good thing. However, I doubt that the creators intended him to be just a plot devices to get the characters out of the bus, only to lead them to another vehicle they can use (that armoured car). Especially considering that the creators in no way have explained what was up with that one student who was suddenly yelling at Komuro. Because of that I fear for the future of this series, especially because the creators were hinting at a bath episode next week…
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. Oh the elusive background episode…it’s so necessary to develop the high schoolers and build up to the next few episodes…but so boring to watch at times xD

  2. For the next ep : it has a bath in episode and it is NOT BATH episode. 🙂

Its more like 35% fanservice and 65% character development next episode.

  3. Can’t say I dislike this episode, the manga-fans are rejoycing, speacially bcause they’re following the manga almost 100%. The extra action scenes are just awesome (like the fight against “them”, in this episode).

  4. This episode was kinda cool, but oh god, the nurse… She needs to die asap, makes me cringe every time she talks

  5. C’mon, do you really expect any history from this?

It’s a fan-service show maked with style (that’s why the director of Death Note and Kurozuka in it), and by fan-service i mean lot’s of apelation (isn’t mean only ecchi, despite you also have this in the show), like any gore B-Movie from the 70’s or 80’s.

That’s why this cartoon is funny as hell.

Enjoy the boob’s and your action gore show man… 😛

  6. The action scene near the end is awesome; the rest is crap.
P/s: the ED in this ep is soooo good. It just as good as the ED in ep 1.

  7. Great action! Expect the notorious bathing scene next episode. And oh, another character’s gonna show up! 🙂

  8. The plot advanced, there was a decent action sequence (though it was predictable) but we’re 5 in out of what… 12? We’re still meeting characters and worse, they seem to be getting more annoying as we go:

nurse with boob sound effects -> creepy cult teacher -> sexy big boobed sniper.

really, the moment after the credits, where the cast goes on the attack to reach the truck is the only moment that did anything for me.

  9. Cassidy, I’d say manga fans are rejoicing because certain scenes in this episode were 200% more awesome than in the manga. One of the few times when animating something and changing the script has a net positive effect.

Of course, the fact that it’s still on track with the manga regardless of the changes is a boon.
