This week’s Fire Force review is going to start a bit differently: I’ll tell you what I didn’t like. Ready? I thought the rain drops looked a little weird. That was it. Everything else was amazing. Let’s get to it.
After the uneven job of last week’s episode, there was some concern about the show direction. This week should give all viewers a collective sigh of relief. The art was fantastic – scene selections, even simple ones, fit and worked well (not always perfectly – I think the blue sky shot was used 3 times, which might be too much, but it was okay). I definitely felt that the direction got back on track and ended up with a cohesive story.
Also there was no cat girl, so I’m pretty happy with that. Instead we got a sadist, which was a huge upgrade!
The addition of a sentient (and retained memory) infernal gives some insight into the overall plot direction – probably will be a bit similar to the route Attack on Titan took. Overall, I think Fire Force is doing a good job in fleshing out their world and environment, with the berserk fireman and the abused mascots.
This episode shows what Fire Force is good at: chaotic story with over the top characters and quality animation. I think last week’s episode departed from that and tried to do a standard villain introduction – which fell a bit flat (also the fight scene sequence issues). I suspect we’ll see more interactions with the various squads and their backers as the season progresses. I predicted we would get back to a fire a week and I’m delighted we have. Fire Force is back on track!
