Okay, so I was wrong in last week’s impression: this episode of Eden of the East was definitely an excellent one and a step above the previous episodes about Pantsu. This episode explained a lot, and I have to admit that these revelations were well worth it. Mr Outside was nowhere near the evil overlord I thought him to be, Mononobe didn’t turn out to have the motives of simply destroying the world. It turns out that this show really likes to use red herrings.
So as it turns out, Mr Outside was a rich businessman called Ato Saizo (har har har), who himself had a part in reconstructing Japan after the second World War. He then however started to wonder whether the society he helped to create was the right one, and so whimsically created Juiz and enslaved 12 people apparently against their will in his quest to improve Japan. Mononobe and another Selecao we meet in this episode simply want to escape this plan, and the only way to do so seems to be to win the game. Apparently it involves sending a whole bunch of missiles to Japan. The only one I didn’t like was Number 10. He really was an emo kid who hates the world and therefore decides to blow it up. I’m glad that he’s going to die soon.
Juiz turns out to be an AI, probably modelled after Ato Saizo’s secretary. Ato may be dead right now, but the real Juiz seems to be working behind the scenes, and she probably is the one who maintains the AI Juiz. In the meantime, it also turns out that number 12 is either the supporter, or another Selecao who doesn’t agree with Mononobe, and something tells me that he’s going to be the main villain of this series once the movie starts.
There’s one part I didn’t quite get though: what was up with the boat-load of NEETs that suddenly returned on the ship? Wasn’t one of those NEET shown as he managed to become active in the society again? Why is the rest of them still naked and captured? Didn’t they get the chance to pick up their lives or something?
Rating: ** (Excellent)
Finally some answers, and satisfying answers they are.
Hm isn’t next week the last episode D:… Hopefully it concludes well, conclusions are always so tricky even moreso ones that are planned to be continued.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Mononobe was totally duped into believing a red herring: the whole Ato Saizo thing sounds too fitting that it may well be a trap for someone too clever for his own good.
Wohoo! This is going to be great.
Can’t wait the next episode and is it known when the movie is going to be released?
Thanks for blogging again.
Funny request by Akira to Juiz at the end of the preview (which is almost entirely scenes from this episode): “Can you make me king of this country?”
Could he even afford it, and more importantly, is it even useful in any way in a constitutional monarchy? 😀
Maybe Number 12 is actually Akira and he’s been using another Selecao’s phone all along (probably hacked the fingerprint verification).
I’m guessing all the NEETs went to different countries and got shipped back at different time or perhaps that random guy on the street was a rare one who managed to work his way out of the hellhole.
I liked how they finally answered why they used portuguese. It always seemed a bit random (still is really…), but Ato Saizo loved Brazillian soccer. Also, it appeared that number 12 has not used his phone prior to moving Juiz to a hidden location. I wonder how that will affect No. 1’s plans to basically blow up Japan. The revelation that Juiz was a computer didn’t come as a surprise at all. First, her voice sounded a bit automated. Plus, what else could pull off all of that? It kinda reminded me of Eagle Eye.
This seems like a show worth a rewatching. I have a hard time remembering who is which number and so forth. I feel like I need a guide. Thank god for Wiki.
Juiz means judge in portuguese
The cheap guy who hasn’t spent a dime on his phone seems to be the most suspicious… By the fact that its clearly one of the most obvious violations of the game makes me wonder if perhaps he’s the supporter? It would make sense considering as noted the supporter does seem to be pretty lax considering the stuff people have been able to get away with. In any case his statement really strikes as odd, I wonder why none of the other Selecao didn’t find that suspicious or out of place in the least.
Story is coming together. Great cliffhanger.
I wonder what’s going to happen to that computer that was left on the table. Will it deface the whole plan by telling the NEETs what’s going to happen as well as what has already happened? Who knows.
Ah, of course c-ron. Thank you for a big piece of the puzzle.
