This episode definitely had some interesting twists, and quite a surprising lead character: that middle-aged guy in trench-coat that we’ve been seeing once in a while in the first half. At first I thought that the creators were creating some side-story here, but the twist in the middle of the episode was… unexpected to say the least.
Looking for some interesting article to write in order to win back his daughter, it seemed like a pretty straight-forward episode that delved into film-noir territory, but having him stabbed and brainwashed was an interesting twist that asks a few more questions about the identity of that strange slasher. Is it really like some kind of parasite or virus that hops from one person to the other? Could the body that attacked him be one of those teenaged girls or something? And how does that slasher have access to the Dollars chatbox?
I’d guess that in a few episodes the show will get to the point in which it can show off the pay-off of all the build-up of the previous episodes. Having excellent build-up is of course one thing, but actually using it is something different, and I’m interested to see what this series can do. It’s obviously been building up a lot during the past few episodes, so they’re not as good or interesting as some of the parts of the first half, but it can still go anywhere at this point.
Here’s one concern, though: it seems to me that the graphics and animation isn’t as good as it used to be. Especially in this episode, the animation wasn’t as solid as we’ve been used to from this series, the backgrounds were a bit bland, and the movement of the characters also felt a bit jerky. Let’s hope that Brains Base saved enough of its budget to also deliver a solid finale.
Rating: * (Good)
Pretty sure the Katana the slasher is using possesses its wielder, and that when the reporter got stabbed, the katana (which looks like a kitchen knife to me)got left stuck in his back…so if he pulled it out, he’d be the new slasher
The reporter’s field of vision when he was attacking Anri is certainly interesting.Cause when the slashing incident in ep13 happen, we see the slashing from Anri’s POV,and it was like that too.And it is pointed out that Anri’s parents died in an incident and not long after that the slasher starts to appear. The evidence points to Anri but the next episode preview proves otherwise.I like how the creators keeps the mystery up this way ^^
Durarara would be a lot better if it being more tight in the storyline, almost every episode feel like filler filler filler.
“movement of the characters also felt a bit jerky”
the jerkiness in character movement it almost funny
I didn’t notice the drop in animation quality until you mentioned it.
This recent episode made me wonder if Durarara can only pull plot twists. It seems like that’s all there is to this anime so far. Regardless, it’s extremely entertaining.
Sometimes, it reminds a bit of the show Lost. You watch an episode and think “wow, that was great” and then you realize that the nothing was really revealed in the episode and that it still left more questions than answers.
But, I’m loving every minute of this anime. It just keeps building and building. I guess everyone’s main concern is whether they can pull it off and actually have a satisfying ending. So many shows are great until they reach the last episode.
The question of who or possibly what The Slasher is, is killing me. Is ‘the possesion’ passed on through the blade? My question is if Saika is supposed be a katana sword, why is everyone getting hit with a kitchen knife. Is it like Selty and can change its appearance, thar by being a kitchen knife it blends in better in the 21st century?
