Durarara – 13

Now… this is just so good. The entire start of this episode screamed build-up: we skip forth half a year, we get to see new characters (like Shinra’s father who suddenly pops up), while the narrator is Anri. The build-up however was just so excellent, the final scene of this episode made a lot more impact than I could have expected at this point. And we’re only at episode one of this series’ second half!

It’s now when this series really has to prove itself by surpassing the already excellent first half. And based on this series, the creators really might actually do it. I love how well written the dialogue of this series is. This episode did so many things at once: it established who the characters were, giving everyone a short scene to confirm that things have settled a bit, only to hit right back at this notion of no development with sudden new plot twists that set the character-development in motion again. The police officer, for example. That was a surprise for him to be bugging Celty so much that she’d lose her nerve over it.

Like its predecessor Baccano, the script for this series again is truly excellent, but in a completely different way. The way the creators in this episode played around with all kinds of different moods and themes, while keeping true to their characters was truly excellent, including the way the creators use their background music and sound effects, which is bold and varied. I’m really curious to see how far the creators are going to be able to take this.

  1. Can’t wait to see this episode, but…does anyone know how far along we are in comparison with the light novels? I read somewhere that the 12th episode was the end of the first volume, but it also incorporated some elements from 2 & 3. I think there’s 7 volumes so far and it’s still not finished. I wonder if they’re just gonna make due with what they have like Baccano.

  2. Right now they are at the end of chapter 2 of the 2nd volume, concerning the plot.
But they already incorporated many character events from volume 2 and 3…which I think made some parts a bit uneven.
I would have liked it more if they went a similar way like Bantorra did and didn’t spend 12 episodes on the story of volume 1. Especially including the first appearance of the slasher, Shizuo’s background, the reporter…they weren’t neccessary for the conclusion of the first arc and I think they might very soon run out of time to really get to an end here.

  3. It is exciting to see them kicking off with a group of very well developed characters, and we already know there are a bunch of intense things going on in the background.

I was really surprised to see Namie in this episode. Is she living with Izaya now? She seems to have access to his office when he is out.

  4. Wow,this episode is just so good!First thing that popped into my mind in that last scene was “gotta get my hands on the soundtrack when it comes out” ^^ The slasher along with that chat room spammer is so creepy though *_*

  5. As much as I appreciated the Anonymity of the chat rooms, I am for one glad that they have finally started using the character’s voices for each alias. It was confusing, and fansubbers not translating names didn’t help either.

That being I said, I guess it’s because we know the idendities of Setton, Tanaka Taro and the girl as Celty, Mikado and Izaya respectively that they can do it.

  6. The last scene gave me goosebumps, the music was really great. I’m really glad this will be a 26 ep series.

  7. Wow… the last scene gave me goosebumps as well but it played out so well. I can’t wait to get my hands on the OST as well. The wait seemed long enough! The last song was really catchy as well even though it was creepy as hell. =S

Nah bitches like them always say that kind of bulls#!t. They tend to think that way probably because they always hook their boyfriends with their body. It’s not like they actually saw Anri was doing something.
