Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu – 23

What the hell was that?!

I mean, words can’t describe this episode. Just… watch it. These past twenty minutes were at the same time brilliant and stupid. We’ve only got one episode left, and here this show comes and decides to completely ignore any kind of plot and focus most of its time on silly character antics. No really, 90% of this episode is just random banter between the different lead characters. No Tiaa, no Gastark, no Ryner’s father. We were in the middle of such a dramatic arc: that atmosphere is completely gone for 90% of this episode.

Yet, I have to admit the guts of the creators to go with such an episode. It’s brilliant to come with such a change of mood when just about every normal urge of common sense would say otherwise. I’ve seen a ton of series by now that had to deal with ending way before their source material does that would leave a ton of unresolved plotholes behind. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a ballsy way to do it: this episode completely ignored the politics that it knew had no way of wrapping up and instead focused on the characters.

A lot of the dialogue of this episode was just plain silly, yet make no mistake: this episode was really trying to develop its characters. I think that the revelation at the end of this episode was actually quite powerful: this entire episode was simply meant as a farewell party for either Ryner or Shion. Shion made his decision in the previous episodes: he’d kill Ryner. This entire episode was simply trying to give the both of them the time to relax and just be themselves. Oh, and I also loved that scene in which Ferris revealed that she wanted to start a dango shop.

But yeah: the plot. there is no way in which the final episode is going to be able to close off this show properly. Still, this episode showed that the creators are going to try something here. And I admit: if I had to chose between a simple adaptation of the next bunch of chapters, or coming with a twist like this, I’d prefer the latter. Let’s see whether the creators can actually make something out of this.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. So..it seem like the creators are going for some claymore-like ending in that they throw together an ending they came up with themselves.. Personally, I’d much prefer them sticking to the story and close off at the end of a major story arc (like berserk for example). A pity that there are no plans to continue with the anime.. at least this episode was still quite enjoyable for what it was.

  2. I have to agree with psgel since this episode seemed very anticlimactic. I expected this episode to lead to some answers to the politics that were so heavily emphasized in previous episodes but it was totally dismissed in this one. It will be interesting to see how the anime ends. By the way how many episodes are in this anime? Because from what I saw on animenewsnetwork there are only 24 episodes total which means there is only one left but someone told me it was 26.

  3. that’s kinda depressing that its ending…. they still have so much to cover and the next arc in the novels is where everything turns exciting and where the real story gets started since all of this is sorta a prologue. 🙁

  5. For those who think the anime creators is making an orignal ending, this part of the plot is in the novel, although the daily-all-character party bit is animated original, but the last part with Shion and Raina is in the novel. Also the 1st novel plot don’t have much story left and one more episode will be a perfect adaptation of the novel plot. So be prepared for a cliff-hanger ending.

  6. The story of Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu will continue on Dai Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu.

Currently, you can read translated volume 1 of it in Baka-Tsuki.

Since Dai Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu is still ongoing, I doubt we’ll see the sequel of Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu animated anytime soon.

  7. @Xefo

    24.

Also, there really isn’t much plot left even in the actual novels. Denyuuden is a prequel to the main series daiden, so most of the questions raised in ep 22 will not be answered in this series. The first series is really more of an emotional conclusion for Ryner and Sion.

Since Densetsu has poor dvd/br sales you’ll never see the sequel animated.

  9. Anticlimactic? HA! Since the beginning, I can already feel the foreshadowing that something bad was going to happen. Given what were left in the last episode about Sion and Ryner…this is the best episode of Densetsu. It felt like I was watching a trailer with trepidation. I so knew something bad was going to happen. It made me howl in despair 🙁 well, I didn’t, but it felt like that.

I’m glad with the director of this episode. S/he did an AMAZING job.

  10. I forgot to add but while the series is the “prequel” of the good cheese, this made a very strong story at that. I like the fact that they’re concluding with Sion and Ryner given that the story began with the two of them: Sion dreaming, Ryner slacking, and the two coming together to change the world. It follows the format of how a good story is made. The added enigma and political crapness is just some extra elements and it’s good they didn’t let themselves be distracted by it. It’s good they didn’t try to force in a lot of answers at the ending. I’m glad they chose this direction in the anime.

Thumbs up. Not really a spectacular series, but it’s certainly a good model for modern anime.

  11. Yeah, that came out of left field. Yeah, it’ll leave me wanting more.

Psgels, what is it you once (always?) said about anime and not getting sequels? I recall Letter Bee almost getting dropped because of it.

But I think it’s a bit too much to hope they pull one out of left field like they did for LB… 😉

  12. Hoiut: I of course really wish that I was wrong, but I’ve just seen too many series like this that didn’t get a sequel. I know that Letter Bee was a major surprise but at the same time I also think that it’s not healthy to hope for the same to happen to every other series you like. It was more of an exception than the norm.
