Black Rock Shooter – 05

Well, since this was the best BRS episode so far I might as well dedicate this week’s kaleidoscope entry to Black Rock Shooter and share some of my thoughts on it. This really is a show that symbolically links stories together. It’s not just the battle world, but there also is the picture book about the bird that keeps returning, and this episode also showed a brief scene of a class that was about literary analysis (or “the protagonist in this book died because… etc”). That could have been very good, really.

My big issue with this series is: why? What does everything boil down to in the end? Unfortunately, the answer to that seems to be forced teenaged emo. The entire plot basically revolves around this mentally deranged character. I can live with that, but the reasons that pushed her in the situation she’s in now… I failed to buy them. The blond girl is one thing, but that teacher in particular is just a walking plot device.

Emo of course doesn’t have to be bad. I’m personally a big fan of Narutaru (or in any case the anime of Narutaru, having not read the manga), which also was a very dark show about teenagers and the issues they can have. The big difference between the two lies in the build-up: Narutaru first created relatable characters and showed scenes in which… they weren’t actually emo. Yomi however, is poorly fleshed out to me: all she has been doing in this series is be mentally depressed. In fact, every character in this series is very one-sided. They’re more plot devices than actual characters and their issues are all just so simple when you boil down to it.

The only interesting character really is the main character, because she is the one who links everything together, in a much more extreme way than usual. She connects all of the different stories together, she is the only one who knows all of the other important characters well. Everything in this series revolves around her, and even the things that don’t at the beginning, end up doing so because of how her symbolic character in the other world ends up fighting everyone.

In this episode things got interesting, as all of these different stories started to intertwine. I admit, I did not expect Yomi’s part to be resolved this early. At the very least the show still seems to be building up to something, so let’s hope that at least that part of its buildup will be good. I adit that I liked the action and the soundtrack in this episode.

I can understand what Mari Okada is doing: the OVA was so dull, something had to happen to it to make it actually worth watching as a full fledged TV-series, and if the build-up was better then this episode actually would have worked really well, however I do think that she took the wrong approach. This type of characterization definitely isn’t her best, and I also believe that the characters in the action world should have… actual personalities and characters. I don’t care if it offends the fanbase of Black Rock Shooter. The creators are already raping the fanbase of Noitamina, so why stop there?

Nisemonogatari – 08

If I had to give this season a label, it’d be the Winter of WTF. Seriously, Nisemonogatari: you as well?

Anyway, for the reason of this post: there just wasn’t anything interesting this week. Danshi was more miss than hit this week, Ano Natsu continued with that boring beach arc (though admittedly it was much better than the week before), Inu X Boku was the same as what it’s always been and I don’t want to repeat myself on it yet again, Black Rock Shooter has completely descended into forced emo and Smile Precure still is in that boring introduction arc of its. Which brings me to Nisemonogatari.

To my complete surprise: I actually liked Nisemonogatari this month. Heck, for the past weeks, it did exactly what I hoped it would do. Something actually happened, and I actually really liked the way the Karen Bee arc was resolved. It was an anti-climax, but it worked well and was very well built up. Finally I actually got the chance to enjoy this series for what it was and marvel at its animation without being bothered by everything else.

However, the fact remains: this show is just way too long. The first episodes of Nisemonogatari were pretty much Araragi walking around until something happened, and passing the time with tons and tons of fanservice. And it lead to this episode. I have very mixed feelings for this episode. I really want to praise the creativity here. The toothbrush scene was just weird in every single way. The animation and direction were also excellent. At the very least: this was a great piece of animation. But this show has also just completely turned into a farce. Is this show too going for the incest? I thought we finally dropped that dead horse. If this was an attempt to be subtle and clever, that part of it at least failed, because it 1) has already been done by a ton of other shows and 2) exactly went back to the themes of the first few episodes in which hardly anything happens aside from tons and tons of fanservice.

I really consider Nisemonogatari better than Bakemonogatari at this point. Another great annoyance that’s gone now: the series no longer feels like watching a bunch of voice actors narrating over a slide-show. They actually animate the characters here. This episode had some of those “ahoge-shots”, but they were far more balanced than before.

I really noticed that after Bakemonogatari, the animation in the Shaft series improved significantly. They seemed to have especially invested a lot in inbetween animation, and the first series where this really stood out was with Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru. For once, this series actually doesn’t feel rushed. Now that they actually have a period of one year in which they release just one series, they can actually focus much more on making that show good. It’s just a shame that it wastes so much time on pointless fanservice over and over. If it was just some random fanservice I would not have minded, especially with the creativity that this show had been doing it. But there were just large parts of this show were nothing just happened aside from the characters talking about random smutty topics. It’s just too much. Still, this episode did show the most amusing ones, even though in the bigger picture it was just blah.

Inu X Boku SS – 06

So, with Black Rock Shooter still in build-up mode, Ano Natsu coming with that horrid beach episode and Smile Precure still in introduction mode, I do have to return again to Inu X Boku. And don’t get me wrong: I have major issues with this series, but despite that, it’s consistently able to put a smile on my face.

This sixth episode was special: it was the first episode that didn’t introduce any new characters (aside from random classmates perhaps), and instead focused on Karuta (the skeleton). And with that, it did a surprisingly good job. At the very least, Karuta just was completely adorable in this episode. And on top of that, I also feel that the rest of the cast emerged from the better.

Still, my big issue with this show still stands: this is a David Production series, and it lacks ambition. Ristorante Paradiso was a unique look at the Iyashi-kei genre with a ton of really old characters who were all very well depicted, Armed Librarians was an awesome roller-coaster ride with awesome storytelling, Level E was one of the best comedies of the recent years, and Ben-To pushed the boundaries of the fanservice comedy genre. And here we have Inu X Boku… where we follow a bunch of half-youkai. This charm of the characters is nice, but this just isn’t up to their usual standards. Of course, it’s far from their worst (I mean, Dogs was an awful OVA), but still: I’d hate them to turn into another Manglobe.

Also, main character: the next time try to confirm that the monster you killed is actually dead… before turning your back to it.

Ano Natsu de Matteru – 05

Okay, my entries on Inu X Boku have now been turned into a Winter 2012 Kaleidoscope. That means that I’m pretty much going to blog either this, Inu X Boku, Black Rock Shooter, and Smile Precure, depending on what interests me the most. This week’s episode of Ano Natsu raised the bar a lot for the bunch, though.

The reason I’m not just going to blog this fully is because of the annoying romance cliches. I can fully understand it if this series decided to take it slow for its first half and let the cast play out. It dropped enough hints that it knows what it’s doing. However, I’ve gotten really annoyed with the romantic misunderstandings, not to mention how the male lead was very annoying to watch.

This time though, things just worked. There were some lesser parts. I’ve gotten a bit tired of school film projects in anime that just have to mirror the plot exactly. That’s all way too obvious, and I’m still not sure why nobody finds it strange that Ichika has this weird pet mascot thing that keeps following her around. At the moment, this feels like Birdy the Mighty Light, without the action, variety or intrigue. Yes, Senkawa was actually more annoying than Kaitou at the beginning, but he had 26 episodes and he used that to develop really well. This show doesn’t have that luxury.

And so there came this episode, where it finally really moves away from theusual cliches. In particular the second half of this episode was great, when Kaitou started filming Ichika for natural scenes of her. It’s there where he set himself apart from his cliche. Tetsurou made it even better afterwards, when this show seemed to go down the road of being yet another “just confess already!”-series, to actually telling Kaitou about the love triangle he’s in. That was great.

Inu X Boku SS – 04

Hmm, so I had hoped that that new character would bring in a bit of a dynamic. Instead he’s just another side character who happens to know some of the other side characters. Not the thing that you’d expect for progressing the storyline of this. I think it’s fairly safe to say now that Inu X Boku will be the worst TV-series from David Production for me.

With this episode, I’ve gotten a really clear picture of this series. It’s really a “feel good show”, and it actually cheers me up quite a bit when watching it. I can really see it work out… if it had 26 episodes to work with. That will allow this cast to properly grow. Unfortunately this is not the case and instead we only have 12 episodes. With that in mind, this episode wasted too much time and introduced too many characters, who were all one-sided, adding even more to the big problem of one-sidedness of this series. It was funny, but with this rate this show is never going to get the right development out of them.

The coming week I’m going to be shuffling around a bunch of series in my blogging schedule. I’ll give this show one more episode to redeem itself, but at the moment it’s the only show that I’m blogging that I’m dissatisfied with. I first want to wait until Smile Precure airs and Black Rock Shooter delivers its second episode for that.

Inu X Boku SS – 03

This was the kind of drama that borders on cheese, yet stays away from it. It’s a bit forced at times, but the acting and direction actually managed to save it.

Unlike last week, this episode gets back on track again with the themes that made this show catch my attention: the loneliness of the lead character. This episode delved more into her upbringing, and showed how she turned into the character she is today: she’s got no problem with fancy dress parties or holding speeches in front of a lot of important people (in fact, that was so trivial that it was just skipped over), and the big focus of this was her desire of real emotions, rather than the fake ones. I like that.

On the downside it did get a bit too dramatic at times. Those two guys talking behind her back were a bit too much for example, but I guess that people love to bitch about the rich and famous (although this is rare to see in anime, where the rich are for some reason always celebrated and revered). It’s more that the acting still is rather one-sided, like how just one suspicious romantic mishap immediately causes her to blow a fit and dump the poor butler, and things like that need to change if this show wants to go anywhere. With a little hope that new guy will bring change in that.

Inu X Boku SS – 02

Okay, with this I’m going to put Hunter X Hunter on hold for a while. At least until Hyouge Mono ends, and if Black Rock Shooter and/or Smile Precure turn out to be interesting, it’ll be for even longer. Some of the comments from my last entry gave me a lot of insight of what I want with this series, especially Machi’s. I can not blog this show like what I do with my usual series. Looking back though, what I enjoyed the most while blogging that series was comparing how the two different adaptations chose to portray the manga, in order to gain more insight in what they both tried to do. However, with that I have a really big dilemma. I cannot really talk about those things in front of people who never watched the original series. I know from blogging manga adaptations that overly nitpicky reviews like that are only annoying to those not familiar with one of the things you try to compare it to. It worked with Full Metal Alchemist – Brotherhood because the recap only took about 15 episodes. This though will look like it’ll take trice as long before we’ll get to the original content. And for that, there really isn’t much I can say about it if I’m supposed to ignore the fact that I already watched this story before.

As for the replacement, the dilemma was whether it should be Inu Boku or Ano Natsu. They’re actually pretty similar. They’re both the usual wish fullfillment: Ano Natsu is about getting to live together with a cute and big breasted girl. Inu Boku is about having a butler. Both are well directed. Both have good characterization despite these cliches. Both have things that just have to be supernatural in some way, though they’re mostly about slice of life and mundane conversations. Ano Natsu is shounen that can be enjoyed by all genders, while Inu Boku is shoujo, but can also be enjoyed by both genders.

The big advantage of Ano Natsu is that it’s anime original. With staff like that, it will develop somehow. What made me go for Inu X Boku, despite it being an adaptation of a manga that still hasn’t finished, is… um… actually pretty simple: I like the cast better. In the end, Ano Natsu just has too many annoying characters, and comparing the wimpy lead to Inu Boku’s cocky tsundere… I have to give it to Inu Boku. I can’t believe I just said that I like a tsundere.

It’s obviously not the tsundere part that makes me like her better, because in general this is a stereotype that still needs to die. Instead, it’s her acting and the way she’s portrayed. On one hand she’s witty and eloquent, but her weaknesses and especially her feelings of loneliness were well portrayed. On top of that is a colourful side-cast, where especially the main side cast is quite likable, and I’m interested. I also like how in essence, everyone in this show is a youkai. Nobody really is special here, ignoring the butler thing obviously. There are some issues: some of the minor side characters do have some acting issues. The blond woman in particular needs to learn that a character is more than just one quirk that you need to repeat over and over.

Now, this episode wasn’t as good as the first episode. The direction and pacing was less inspired, and in particular there was not as much emotion stuffed into it in comparison: most of the time just had the main character snark her way through its airtime. Yet, the show knows how to build up. The finale in particular was quite heart-warming. The episode also had some nice moments, though I really would have liked to see a bit less monotone tone for the first half of the episode. Out of all the new series I’m blogging, this one did end up the least interesting after episode two, but I have hope. Especially now that it’s clear that there’s a good end point for this series so that it won’t need a bad ending.

Summer 2011 Kaleidoscope – Week 39

Dantalian no Shoka – 12 Well, that was a bit of an anti-climax… this show ends with the three main libraries… sortof meeting. Again, it’s the “let’s hope for the second season that’s most likely never going to come”-episode. The atmosphere was nice, but Huey’s near-death felt shallow to me, and in fact this episode didn’t really amount to anything, as I never really got what Dalian’s alter ego was supposed to be. At the beginning of this series I praised this series for Dalian and Huey having a solid chemistry where they both were equal to each other, compared to Gosick and Kamimemo. But here’s the thing: they never changed, making them end up the worst couple of the three. Is it also the worst series of the three? That’s something that I won’t say. Its individual stories were great enough to make up for that. In any case, this marks the end of my Summer 2011 Kaleidoscope. It was an interesting experiment, though I won’t be doing a kaleidoscope for the upcoming Autumn season. At this point I’ve got 7 shows that I’m pretty sure of that I’m going to blog, while I’m still heavily debating about the final three, Rating: * (Good) Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji This was a very bizarre ending in which especially Kaiji himself went completely out of character. I mean it had it coming that he’d get screwed over, but he started acting like a complete saint here, only to blow all of the money he had left on pachinko. This episode showed that over the course of 50 episode… he hasn’t really learned anything. Also, here’s the thing about manly tears: they work well when well timed. These past few episodes have been nothing but grown men crying over and over. I mean, show some restraint, people! At least the first season had a great ending, but this just felt weird. Rating: – (Disappointing) Kamisama Dolls – 13 This ending was better than I expected. Instead of going with some cheesy fight, this was almost immediately resolved and instead the entire episode focused on Kyouhei. Much more interesting to close this show off, even though the story is nowhere near finished. I know that the end of this episode hinted at a second season, but I’m not going to buy it until I see an actual confirmation of that. There have been too many series that pulled the same, and yet never came with a sequel. Overall when you look at the series that Seiji Kishi directed, this probably is my second favourite, after Angel Beats. Kamisama Dolls however has shown that he is growing as a director, because even though Angel Beats had a much better plot (hey, I liked it!), Kamisama Dolls felt more balanced than his previous series: it had the right formula of comedy, action, drama and romance smashed together in 13 episodes, which made it very entertaining. Still. For god’s sake stop making people run into a romantic confession. That poor horse is already dead enough! Rating: ** (Excellent)]]>

Summer 2011 Kaleidoscope – Week 38

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukinai – 00
I’m not going to put this on first impressions because it clearly was intended as just an appetizer, is just 10 minutes long and was not the start of this show at all, but I do want to share a few impressions of it. In the end, this one turned out to be an abusive harem. You know, the kind where the male lead still is surrounded by girls, girls and nothing but girls, but instead of your regular harem this show thrives on abuse. The big twist is that the females suffer just as much for a change, rather than just have everyone tsundere on the male lead. This episode had a nice sense of irony about it, but it’s going to be very hard for this show to escape its harem roots once it fully starts, especially with so much competition. These are the kinds of twists you can’t keep pulling forever.

The World God Only Knows OVA
Yeah, I was completely fed up with this series, though after having been told that this OVA would contain some interesting developments I did give in at the end. And yeah, I guess that this episode contained an interesting twist… that is completely pointless to end the series with. You need another season with that, but I do not think that I can bear to sit through another season of this thing. This episode was fairly tolerable because three of its core characters were some of the best characters in the series (including that random side-character who popped up). Elcie however still is a huge pain to watch. Being a moron is one thing, of course, but this girl feels like she had her head lobotomized. I do not want to watch anything of her anymore. Please someone tell me that she gets better quickly!

The musical parts of this episode also were really bad. The OP in particular was just horrid, and also don’t ask me why studying on English automatically improves your musical abilities? I mean, their song at the end wasn’t exactly good, but it still was miles better than their first attempts. That’s the problem with just about every musical performances in anime: the creators just slap some random J-pop tune behind it and expect them to make sense, while instead this nearly always just turns everyone out of character and inserts random instruments that just aren’t there.
Rating: – (Disappointing)

Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji – 25
God dammit Kaiji, you’re still not done yet? Ah well, at least the pachinko arc is over, but to use the old man like that… I am not looking forward to it. Overall the ending of the pachinko arc just felt underwhelming due to how ridiculously dragged out it was. Even this episode was full of pointless symbolism, endless monologues, and other ways to just randomly stall time. Seriously Kaiji: there have been plenty of series that took up just 20 episodes. It has been done before. This isn’t an issue about production or budget anymore because if this series was shorter it would actually flow much better AND be a lot cheaper to make.
Rating: – (Disappointing)

Kamisama Dolls – 12
Oh thank god. I could have sworn that this show only had 12 episodes, but thankfully it got one extra, which was very welcome in terms of timing. I was really afraid that the creators would make Hibino’s near-rape the climax of the series, but this episode thankfully restored itself by focusing on Kyouhei. The way they used Hibino was a bit boring, but at this point that pretty much is the only way for him to really unleash his inner beast, so I understand why the creators did it. The whole Kyouhei vs. Village was quite well developed in this episode, but the problem is that the rest of the cast feels half-hearted and unfinished.

Summer 2011 Kaleidoscope – Week 37

Blade – 12
This episode had the single best action scene of the entire Blade series. How’s that for an excellent conclusion? Seriously, I’m really glad to see that this one closed off with a good ending, and it was everything it needed to be: exciting, action-packed and conclusive. the scene in the air where Eric and Deacon Frost are both falling in particular stands out as creative, and an excellent climax to the series. This really made up for the cop-out finale of the X-Men.

What’s even more interesting here is that this episode seemed very similar to the ending of No.6, but instead here everything was done right. A huge building was blown up, but half the series had actually been preparing for that moment, making use of the huge weakness of the Vampires, the Sun. There was an actual climax in which the characters share a few words, and then move on, rather than just leave without any random explanation.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

Sacred Seven – 12
Well, at least I got a good laugh out of it. If the rest of the episodes would have been like this, at least it would have been a lot more entertaining. Don’t get me wrong though this was hilariously bad. The ridiculously over the top villain was more funny than threatening (Doors?! We don’t need no stinkin’ doors!), but the way in which the creators also randomly decided to just kill him and let Faye be the final villain also made no sense whatsoever. And yes, because of that we got a “talking the monster to death”-ending. What also struck my mind was how hilariously silly the new monster designs were. I mean, were the creators really serious with Knight’s “costume”? And what was up with that green teddy bear or the face of the main villain? Also, this show took “human shield” a little too literal here.
Rating: (Enjoyable)

Usagi Drop – 11
Aand like expected… this show just ends. The big climax is Rin losing two teeth. I get the symbolism, but I still would have preferred it if the creators also showed the growing up parts. I know that the ending of the manga is rumoured to be terrible, but you can rewrite or completely ignore that. Right now, this does feel a bit incomplete, even though this series probably had the easiest task out of all the series that I’m currently watching to create a good ending. Standalone though, this episode again was as good as usual. I especially liked how the adults ended with themes about giving up your entire life for your children. That was a very good climax for this series.
