xxxHolic – 14 – Twins and Vibrations

First of all, this episode comes with a new ED, and it totally ROCKS. Seeing Maru and Moro on the air guitar like that, and Mokona on air drums, without overdoing it is so incredibly awesome. The song really fits the dark moods of the show as well. Two thumbs up for the creators.

About the episode: it shows that we can have two-episode arcs as well. I think xxxHolic will now be turning into that direction. The first two-arc story, in any case, is great. We have these twins, and they’re the total opposite of each other. One is cheerful and laid-back, while the other is gloomy. The cheerful one always takes the initiative, and the gloomy one kindof tags along. The gloomy sister feels that she’s being held back by her twin. And this starts to get to her. In the end, she ends up with a bloody forehead inside a cinema. This one really is getting exciting. Especially as I can relate to the gloomy sister a bit. Not because of twins, but because of other things.

The fact that this episode reminded me of Jigoku Shoujo 16 also made this one better. Watanuki, Himawari and Domeki’s antics were great to see once more. Yuuko, meanwhile discovered that she has a hidden talent for juggling while Maru and Moro ran arond with a couple of rugs. And call me crazy, but I begin to like the tall character design even more.

xxxHolic – 13 – Pidgeons

xxxHolic returns with a normal case again, this episode. This time, we have a fallen angel. It’s a strange creature who can attach itself to a person who wants to be stronger so badly, that he doesn’t care if he loses control of himself. The fallen angel then lives as a parasite on its host, while this host loses its mind’s ability of self-control. In exchange, the host is freed from any burdens it suffers from. When the fallen angel has done its work, it detaches from its host, leaving it behind as an empty shell, and just goes and searches for a new host to leech from. The previous host has lost all critical thinking at that time. Only through active nurturing, the host body can be able to recover.

This time, the host body belonged to a girl named Rie. Everyone sees her as a very nice and quiet girl. Though when the fallen angel chooses to reside in her body, it seems that she’s been acting that way. She probably felt incomplete, she probably wanted to be free (hence the pigeons who kept flying across the screen during the episode). I alos like the fact that we never know what happened to her in the end, or whether she got saved or not.

Apart from that, some further information about Maru and Moro is given. Watanuki tries to invite the two of them to a festival, but then their cheery self disappears, and they explain that they can’t ever leave Yuuko’s shop. They’re both soulless bodies, only able to live inside. When they go outside, they wouldn’t survive. I loved the way the pipe fox broke the tension in this. ^^

It could also have been me, but Watanuki and Himawari seemed much closer than before. The two of them talk much more to each other than at the beginning of the scene. Even with Domeki near. I think that this is supposed to be a subtle hint for the relationship between the two of them. Either that, or Watanuki’s mind’s playing tricks on him again.

Surprisingly, Domeki didn’t choose for art class, while Watanuki and Himawari did. Still, that doesn’t mean that Watanuki hasn’t got enough time to yell at him. The two of them have (Watanuki’s) lunch together (At this point, Watanuki’s given up on trying to stop him), and they walk homewards together as well. Another interesting fact is that Domeki got some nasty cuts in his hands while he tried to save Watanuki from being stabbed by a small knife. I also loved how Domeki and Watanuki ended up together at the fishing game during the festival. ^^

There wasn’t any tension in this episode. The climax was badly deus ex machina-ed away by the pipe fox. Yuuko also was a bit too serious for her own good. Normally, she’s much more playful. And why did she go out? I was also a bit disappointed when the creators decided not to show Watanuki’s and Himawari’s self portraits. I’d like to have seen what they managed to draw.

The art style also was extra messy this episode, and I loved it. I can really appreciate it when an anime differs from the standard art style.

(On a side-note: you would think that the creators would do something about the number thirteen in this episode, but then again, this is japanese animation, not european).

xxxHolic – 12 – Asking for help

This episode was a special one. It was specifically aimed at the relationship between Watanuki’s relationship with Hinata and Domeki. To top everything, the creators tried to implement some really scary scenes, combined with some awesome comedy. Guess what? It actually worked. This episode was probably one of the best yet.

We start with Yuuko, Watanuki, Domeki and Himawari arriving at a beach house. Meanwhile, Watanuki continues rambling to Domeki, and a ghost keeps writing blue letters on a wall. One thing I really can appreciate in anime is when all kinds of things happen in the background. It shows that the creators really have been planning. Watanuki was just too great. He really hates Domeki with passion.

They enter the house, and a creepy tune keeps playing. Watanuki checks out the kitchen, and notices a strange vase with a blue flower. Lots of Watanukis getting giddly over Himawari and bickering towards Domeki later (too funny, by the way), evening falls and all of the characters go to sleep. Watanuki then wakes up, in the middle of the night because he hears some scratching on the walls, coming from the room next to him. The only problem is, the corridor shows no sign of a room being there. He checks out more carefully, and then notices that the wall on the corridor was a fake one. He then sees a door, and walks into the room. What then follows is a great attempt at a scary scene. It had great backgrounds, and Watanuki really made me believe that something really scary was going on.

This episode also had just a perfect build-up. Even though the ghost appeared to be just Mokona, the preparation was just perfect. During the entire episode, letters kept appearing on the wall, a very creepy tune played, and Watanuki’s ramblings were enough to make the viewer not notice about the small details which might have given this away (for example, the cardboard wall). The blue vase at the end, of course, was a standard thing with ghost stories. People are pulling a prank about some kind of ghost, they make the main character believe that there really is one by dropping lots of clues. But one of these clues doesn’t belong to them, and actually is a real ghost. Still, this episode had something which most of the other shows who attempt this don’t have: the fact that ghosts are common. Watanuki sees them everyday. Most other shows just use ghosts once, without a real explanation. Another thing is Watanuki’s reaction to this. He became scared at the moment when he saw the real ghost. Really scared. This was an aweosme sight.

These things may have been awesome. The ghost story was probably one of the best in xxxHolic yet, and Watanuki and Domeki were just too funny at times (you’d think that jokes like these would bore after a while, but surprisingly, they don’t. Seeing Domeki making use of Watanuki’s imaginary merry-go-round was just hilarous), the truly awesome part lies in Himawari, and Watanuki’s reluctance to call to Domeki for help. Himawari actually felt sorry for Watanuki, as he wasn’t able to swim because the sea seemed like a very popular place for spirits. So she thought she’d do something for him, which involved getting Watanuki to call Domeki for help. If he managed to do that, Yuuko would lift Watanuki’s curse for one full day, so that he could go swimming with Himawari. (Watanuki’s right about one thing: Himawari’s just too cute)

Watanuki, however, was not able to call for help. He still hates Domeki for the things he did, and he doesn’t realize that he actually likes being with him (just refer to any episode at which the two of them were together and had to solve a mystery. Watanuki’s mind was just too occupied with the thing which were happening, that he took Domeki’s existance for granted). Though when it comes to calling for help, Watanuki’s mind interferes too much for him to be able to say it. Despite the fact that Domeki’s saved his life many times before (heck, he even stood in the rain for ten hours in order to save him).

Overall, I loved this episode. Himawari was just too cute, not per se because of her looks, but because of the plan she had.The ghost story really made a good attempt at being scary. This really was xxxHolic at its best.

xxxHolic – 11 – Mokona’s So Cool!

This episode continued the awesomeness that xxxHolic managed to start in the previous episodes. Both in terms of comedy as in terms of stories. I just love seeing Yuuko, Maru, Moro and Mokona getting giddly over just about everything, and this episode was no exception. The scenes which happened in the air treated the viewer with some great choreography. Especially when Watanuki fell from the sky, I really noticed how great that scene looked.

It’s great to see that characters are actually returning. In fact, it seems that the sprites will be playing some kind of role, later in the anime. The fact that the rain sprite appears in two episodes, and gets mentioned in another one has to say something. Especially if you include the fact that both this episode as the seventh one were the only ones who got featured in the OP.

Mokona was just utter coolness. Just try to compare such a cute and fluffy animal with the enormous bird it was riding. I also just love it when the Watanuki and Mokona are alone on some kind of mission. Mokona’s playful character really helps Watanuki get through trials like these. Even though he doesn’t like it. ^^;

The Vestal Sprite was too cute, by the way. At first, it’s obvious that she doesn’t want to talk to Watanuki. Though as the episode progresses, I really believed that she wasn’t interested in neither Watanuki or Doumeki. That made the end of the episode turn into a small surprise after all. I really liked her character art, especially if you combine it with these firefly-esque lighty thingies.

We also get to see the five unidentified flying objects which were haunting around the OP. I kept wondering what they were. Well, they appear to be Karasu Tengu, or bird-like servants of the Vestal Sprite. And rather short tempered ones as well. I just loved their squeaky little voice-acting and the way they yelled towards Watanuki. i loved them even more at the end of the episode, when they were chased by Mokana in the background. It’s a little detail, but I can really appreciate such subtle details. Especially when Mokona just kept chasing those guys until Watanuki told him (her?) to stop. ^^;

You can say that Watanuki’s relationship with Himawari is annoying. And yes, at times it is. Though Doumeki manages to play for an adequate rival in order to spice up this relationship a bit. That’s again something that this episode displays, as Doumeki manages to steal the lunch that Watanuki had prepared for Himawari. ^^; I also loved the fact that Himawari actually sent a letter to Yuuko, in order for her to give it to Watanuki. Did she have any specific reason to do that?

Overall, xxxHolic is just a great anime. Ranging from Yuuko, Maru, Moro and Mokona trying to get on Watanuki’s nerves as much as possible to Doumeki’s sarcastical comments to the very interesting stories told at each episode, along with the themes and characters that come with it. I don’t care if the art is low-quality. It looks great, and that’s what matters, no?

xxxHolic – 10 – Mokona’s super suction power!

Watanuki’s face when he found out that Yuuko was planning to do something to make him and Himawari get closer together was just priceless. The episode itself also was just great. Ghost stories, who doesn’t love them? Basically, Yuuko had a 100 Tales of Horror in mind. Or at least a shortened version. It’s basically a ritual, which the japanese used in order to tell ghost stories.

To Watanuki’s displeasure, Domeki’s invited as well. The four of them prepare a bit, and then each of them tells a story. Himawari begins, and her story is the best in my opinion. Domeki makes use of a standard story with a fast climax. Watanuki tells about something that actually happened to him, while Yuuko invites some actual spirits to tell their own story.

Himawari’s may have been the best, Watanuki’s strory was also pretty interesting. As it was something that really happened to him, there is no climax. As a kid, he walked to some place, and at a crossing, he saw a very weird guy cross the streets, wearing an expensive suit, a top hat and an umbrella. At the next crossing, the guy appeared again, and once more at the third crossing. Yuuko then mentions the fact that if Watanuki continued one more time, things would’ve become nasty, as the number four equals the number six or thirteen in western culture. This is of course, logical as four is spoken as Shi, which means the same thing as death. This does make you wonder, however. What were the guys who invented the japanese thinking when they gave these the same meaning?

Interesting note: Mokona eating a watermelon was just too cute. Another interesting note: same with its suction power. Yet another interesting note: Himawari and Domeki were able to see the spirits this time. One more interesting side-note: Himawari does get worried about Watanuki at one point (*wink, wink*). One final interesting note: remember the movie? That also happened during the summer holidays, so at one point, somewhere before this episode, the movie took place.

It’s also typical that Watanuki really does not have the guts to be with Himawari alone, and that he always ends up being together with Domeki for some reason. I like this about him: his dependance on others. Yuuko’s evil personality also is just wonderful. You really know that she’ll show up with plans that Watanuki absolutely does not look forward to. Overall, I really liked this episode. But then again, how can someone who’s a big fan of stories like that not like it? ^^

xxxHolic – 09 – Pipe Fox

A woman who has a bad habit, her little finger has been stiff, and smoke has been coming out of it. Seems familiar, no? Still, xxxHolic manages to turn it into something worthwile once more. The main theme of the episode is “pinky”, as all of the rituals and symbols introduced have got something to do with the little finger. The red strings of destiny, the “Pinky Swear”, the Pipe Fox who imitated a red string of destiny and the amusement park attraction which involved a guillotine which would attempt to cut two lovers’ embraced pinkys, but missed (sorry if this sounds a bit vague).

The woman in this episode does tell lies, though her real bad habit is running after too many men at the same time, fakely promising them eternal happiness and “manipulating the red strings of destiny”, as Yuuko tells us at the end of the episode. It’s good that the episode only focused on three of these men, instead of trying to show too many at the same time, so the show can focus on the three individuals.

Domeki and Watanuki are also getting more interesting as every episode passes. On the surface, Watanuki dislikes Domeki, and Domeki finds Watanuki weird. But still, the two of them end up taking the same route homewards. Domeki doesn’t turn his mind on something else when Watanuki suddenly runs off, and Watanuki isn’t scared to tell Domeki about things that happened. Oh, and the little dance that the Pipe Fox made Watanuki perform in front of Domeki was hilarious.

Despite all of the themes introduced in the series, I have one small problem with these. Or rather annoyance. As this show is takes place in Japan and is focused at a Japanese audience. This means that only Japanese customs are being dealt with. I’d love to see some habits and symbols from other countries pass the spotlights. There definately is enough material for it. But then again, this show has specialized like no other on the area of spirituality, so it’s also nice to see such an in-depth explanation of them.

Another little detail I loved: Mokona actually drinking almost half a bottle of liquor. Who ever said that cute and fluffy animals couldn’t enjoy themselves? ^^ I’m also wondering about the price that the woman was supposed to give Yuuko. And what was the meaning of the ring? These parts were a bit neglected, unfortunately, though I loved the way the climax was executed. Nothing was said at all, but you knew that if the knife was to go down, it would be hitting, and cutting their fingers off. Overall, I liked this episode. It’s not the best xxxHolic had to show, but I had a really good time watching it.

xxxHolic – 08 – Getting Better and Better

It’s just as I hoped: xxxHolic continues to get better and better. I guess I’m really into shows which tell a different story for each episode, as I just totally loved Mushishi and Jigoku Shoujo as well. Okay, there are no such things as cliffhangers, the endings of the episode don’t make you feel curious about what is going to happen afterwards. But still, I find myself wondering about the next story to be told at each of these anime I mentioned. This works just as strong as cliffhangers, maybe even stronger. Especially if you consider that a cliffhanger’s power mostly lies in the moment it happens. The minute the story continues takes its power away again, in most cases. When you have shows like xxxHolic, Mushishi and Jigoku Shoujo, this power doesn’t get taken away at all.

This episode probably was the best xxxHolic episode yet. It already starts with great references, both to Tsubasa Chronicle and the xxxHolic movie. Watanuki is bringing all of Yuuko’s stuff outside, in order to thoroughly clean them, just like in the movie. He encounters Mokona again, this time not in a box, but disguised as a stranded pillow. Maru and Moro are meanwhile hitting a rug, stitched with a couple of butterflies. Maru uses a bat (if I do recall it correctly, it’s the same bad as the one Yuuko bought in the sixth episode, after which she labeled it as a sword), while Moro uses Fye’s staff. To make things even better, The butterflies on the rug seem to be avoiding the bat and the staff. This truly was one greatly excecuted scene. So many things happen at once and Watanuki’s reaction was just perfect.

Then, the real story of the episode begins. It’s about a woman who’s collecting all kinds of rare and ancient stuff. She then notices a closed, cillindric, ceramic box-like thingy, and she asks Yuuko if she can have it. Yuuko warns her not to open it at all costs, and she gets pretty serious when she does this. The woman eventually gets to have the box, though I wonder what she had to give Yuuko in order to get it. I think that Yuuko’s advice was enough of a price, as the rest of the episode shows.

The woman appears to be a new teacher on Watanuki’s school. This means that Domeki and Himawari also are a bit involved in the case. The woman immediately recognizes Watanuki when she sees him, along with Domeki and Himawari. Then, Himawari accidentally opens the box, and a sealed monkey-pawn shows up. The woman tests this out by asking for a day of rain. She hears a loud “knack”, and the rain starts. The next morning, it appears that in order to make it rain, the monkey pawn took all of the water from the school pool.

What follows is a beautiful story about the woman who begins to lose herself more and more. She first wishes for a mirror she wanted to have for a long time. This mirror is probably the most valuable mirror in whole Japan, so once she wishes for it, the monkey pawn goes to steal it for her and brings it to her. She then notices that every time she makes a wish, one finger of the pawn breaks. She makes her next wish when she’s in a writer’s block, and wishes for a great paper for her to turn in. Of course, the pawn steals this from another brilliant student. In the meantime, she happily tells Watanuki, Domeki and Himawari about what she did, and doesn’t even realize she’s going into the wrong direction. Watanuki gets more concerned by the minute, as well as Domeki, although he shows less signs of it. Himawari doesn’t notice anything, while Yuuko remains as serious as she was when she handed the pawn to the woman.

Then, she misses her train, and just like all ordinary people, she wishes for an accident to happen. She really breaks when she sees a person getting ran over by a train, right in front of her eyes. To top this, she gets to pay the price of plagiarizing, and this makes her think that she’ll also be accused of the person being ran over, and she begs the pawn to undo all the things she did. Then, it strangles her, leaving no trace of her, it returns everything like it was before, and so it comes back to Yuuko. I so loved this story. Especially when she saw the person being ran over. Even though it was just a colorless figure, it did make an impact.

I’m also beginning to love the art more and more. Okay, so what if the long limbs aren’t natural. You never hear anyone talk like that about chibi-characters, do you? The facts that the art is messy and illogical are really starting to grow on me, and I’m really beginning to like the character designs more and more. Even normally dull-looking characters like Watanuki and Domeki look more interesting by the minute, and Himawari looks less annoying after every episode passes. And yes indeed, the “extras” aren’t even bothered to being colored, or given a face in the first place. Still, it’s better than method that most anime attempt: every “extra” has the blandest clothing, the most common face ever, and an extremely dull haircut, while the main characters suddenly have hair in the wildest colors, in huge amounts, and each have something unique. Though they still try to simulate some realism while trying to be as natural as possible while spending as little budget on it as possible. xxxHolic at least recognizes that the anime isn’t about these unimportant extras, and just gives them a quick outline and places a number of these on the scenery, in order to fill the screen a bit. In fact, this works so much better than those cheap attempts at realism.

xxxHolic – 07 – Getting saved by people you hate

The element I like most about xxxHolic definately is the deepness of all the different messages featured in the episodes. This episode probably was the deepest yet. The show really is getting better and better. Today’s episode starts off pretty lenient, but it really gets more serious by the minute.

Rain is falling during the entire episode. We start off with Watanuki walking outside, carrying an umbrella and complaining about the rain. He then gets punished by a very talkative and easy ticked-off red haired girl, the same we saw in the OP. She appears to be a rain-sprite, and needs Watanuki’s help for something.

This girl is very amusing. Especially her look when, back at Yuuko’s, she gets to see a special performance by Maru, Moro and Mokona. Then Yuuko talks to her, immediately annoying Watanuki by defining him as her “property”. It appears that this girl wants someone saved. According to Yuuko, Domeki plays a key-role in solving this, so Watanuki goes to pick him up, against his will, of course.

The rain sprite then sees that the combination of Domeki and Watanuki could be the key to helping her special person. But first, they head to Himawari in order to borrow something that she’s wearing. Watanuki really freaks out during this scene. Anyway, the two of them manage to get Himawari’s ribbons.

The problem lies with an hydrangea-flower. It’s grown to be huge, its flowers have turned red, and Watanuki can clearly feel that there are evil spirits roaming inside this thing. We see a couple of minutes of Watanuki and Domeki investigating, until Watanuki gets caught inside the flower.

Inside the flower, everything’s pure black. Here, Watanuki meets up with a crying girl. She wants to go somewhere, but she’s afraid to do it alone. Then we meet the fatherly side of Watanuki, as he tries his best to cheer up the girl. She accompanies him through the darkness, until a they reach a point which looks like some kind of entrance to some dark and gloomy place. The girl wants to go in, but Watanuki gets his doubts.

Then we see a very interesting way of dialogue. Beams of light appear, and each of them represents one (japanese) letter. I really liked this, and it gives the overall atmosphere a really nice dark undertone. We then see a number of raindrops appear, along with Himawari’s ribbon. Watanuki then uses the ribbon he carried with him, and he gets out, after comforting the girl once more, in a really fatherly way.

He wakes up under the hydrangea from before, now with blue flowers. He holds hands with the girl, though she seemed to have been dead from the beginning, and then he sees a very pissed-off Domeki. And this is where the great part of the episode begins. It was really nice to see Watanuki this calm, though it was definately nothing special. Just another case which had been solved.

Though then it appears that Domeki had been standing in the rain for a massive TEN hours, waiting for him. Yuuko explains what happened afterwards, when both of them have taken a shower. His wound from the time with the Angel-san has also gotten a lot worse, though Domeki isn’t the one who’ll mention it. That means that Watanuki owes him big time for saving him. (after all, Domeki used Himawari’s ribbon in order to get Watanuki out). This brings up so many interesting issues. It’s definately clear that Watanuki hates Domeki. The two of them make a nice team, but that fact remains.

But what happens when Watanuki suddenly finds out that Domeki’s willing to go through such lengths, in order to save him? Would he have done the same thing? Especially if you consider the wound. And what if you also consider the fact that that little girl was actually heading for the netherworld for people who tortured and killed others and persons who commited suicide? This means that she was actually leading Watanuki to his own suicide if Domeki hadn’t shown up. And what about the precious item Domeki had to give Yuuko in order for her to give the information on how to save Watanuki?

The rain sprite also was interesting. It appears that she didn’t want to save the girl in the first place. She wanted to protect the hydrangea. She doesn’t care about humans at all, though the hydrangea seemed to be an elemental spirit, corrupted by the deeds of the little girl, whom it actually tried to save (the beams of light from before belonged to the hydrangea, it seems). She ends with an interesting statement: humans don’t save elemental spirits, then why should elemental spirits save humans?

I liked the use of umbrellas, this episode. Each of the characters had one fitting their style of clothing. The rain sprite had one to match her dress, Watanuki’s umbrella was an ordinary blue one, and Domeki had one in the style of feudal Japan. I also loved Domeki’s methods to ignore Watanuki whenever he got into one of his hyperactive moods (which happened a lot this episode).

xxxHolic – 06 – Addictions, and how to lose them

Okay, no in-depth for this entry, as I have to leave in a minute (mothers day, and all). For the first time, we see a case in which Yuuko is the one in the spotlights, and Watanuki acts as a viewer. There’s no Domeki or Himawari in this episode, thought the case makes totally up for this. We have a case that might appeal to a LOT of different people: a woman, who’s addicted to the internet wants to quit. It was really scary seeing her struggle with herself, Yuuko also helped in this.

I also love the open ending in this episode, not to mention the red baseball-bat which got turned into a sword by Yuuko. It was basically a pretty predictable episode, but the little details totally managed to save it. The warp-tunnel was great again, just as Yuuko’s ethical monologue.

xxxHolic – 05

This episode wasn’t as serious as the previous ones, it was a bit more relaxed. here weren’t any serious problems like in the previous episodes, and it basically consisted of telling the story of two supernatural foxes, a lucky arrow and Shiritori.

We start out with Watanuki and Himawari attending one of Domeki’s arrow-shooting tournaments. Domeki wins, and he gives Watanuki the end of his winning arrow, as a memento. Watanuki, of course, doesn’t like this. When he walks to Yuuko’s place in order to make her some food, he runs into a strange food-stand, and two badly drawn human-like foxes. One old, and one just a child.

He eats a bit from their stand, and gives the small fox Domeki’s arrow, which appears to be a strong fortune-bringer, keeping away evil spirits (this is logical, as it comes from Domeki, after all). The food appears to taste delicious. Watanuki then remembers that Yuuko’s still waiting for him to make her food, so he leaves. The foxes give him a little meal as thanks for the arrow.

Yuuko, of course, has run into the foxes before, as she’s totally excited when Watanuki brings their food. This has to be, of course, celebrated, involving lots of sake. We also see a couple of screens of a nearly full-moon, meaning that the next night’ll probably feature a full one.

The next day, Yuuko requests Watanuki to go back to the foxes and deliver a package (remember her policies? ^^). Though, as it will be full moon, such as hinted, in combination with friday the thirteenth, and Watanuki’s little problem, he has to be very careful. Therefore, she gives him a little backpack with wings. I don’t know where I’ve seen this, but I got a serious deja-vue with this item.

Anyway, Watanuki heads out, and indeed, he runs into evil spirits, cleverly disguised as poorly-placed shadows. The backpack seemed to contain Mokona, who starts playing Shiritori. Shiritori works like this: you start with a japanese word, and the person next to you has to say another word, beginning with the same letter the first one ended with. This seems to repel all of the evil spirits, though Mokona can’t resist to make Watanuki’s job hard by ending all of his (her? what kind of gender is Mokona actually?) words with “Ri”. We also see Mokona for the first time serious, well, at least semi-serious. I have to say that I liked this play of Shiritori, while running away from the evil spirits.

They arrive at the fox, and then it became clear that Shiritori originated from people who had to walk through evil forest-like surroundings. The Shiritori would keep away all of the evil spirits and danger. Yuuko’s package appeared to be two rare shadow-birds, who only seem to appear in the light of the full moon. The old fox seems to be quite fond of them.

For a laid-back episode like this, I liked it. xxxHolic seems to be following the same pattern Jigoku Shoujo and Mushishi did, only with a lot more emphasis on the main characters, so laid-back episodes seem to be perfect to have been included once in a while.
