Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 17 – A Very Strong Emphasis on Friendship

That was such a cute episode. I can’t believe how great Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club turned out. ^^ I just loved the overall atmosphere in this episode!

This episode consisted out of five parts. The episode starts back in the human world. Misao still is down because Washuu took her away from people who treated her kindly (aka the witches). Washuu symbolically seals the gate to the magic world (and with symbolic, I really mean symbolic. How else can she expect that two wooden bars would be able to stop anyone? (^^)). Misao, however, runs away, and doesn’t return to the Mahou Shoujo Club afterwards. Later, we see the Mahou Shoujo Club do their usual things, including baking some cookies and having fun. Still, at the same time, it was rather sad that Misao was missing out on everything. Still, I loved it when Ryouki almost got turned into a dessert again. ^^

The second part of the episode focused on the fact that the school holidays are over again. As Sasami had been on a trip to the Magical World, she obviously didn’t have time to do her homework, and now she’s attempting to do it all in one night. Monta went even worse when it seems that he’s trying to do his homework on the next morning, just before the teacher arrives. (^^) We also see a little talk between Washuu, Daimon and Ginji. During their first talk, he was rather serious, though now it seems that Ginji placed his trust in Washuu. Misao did come to school, though she’s back to the way she was in episode 1, and she tries to avoid all kinds of social contact. Sasami also gets down because of that.

The next part: Monta sees that Sasami’s down because of Misao, so he gives her some fireworks. Sasami shows it to the Mahou Shoujo Club, and they plan to ignite them that evening. The only problem is getting Misao to come. Washuu offers to do it. I really like the way Washuu tried to hide her worries from Misao. When school finishes that day, she shows Misao a badly drawn invitation for that night. She made it look like Sasami and the others drew it, while in fact she drew the whole thing. It’s really obvious, though I guess that she didn’t want people to judge her artwork. Well, that plan failed. I especially loved how she drew herself as some kind of huge monster. (^^;)

Next part: the actual fireworks. I really loved this part, as it featured Misao and the rest of the Mahou Shoujo club getting back together. Of course, it was incredibly fun seeing everyone have fun and laughing with each other. Especially seeing Monta getting abused. (^^) The question remains, will Misao remember this, or will she turn back to the witches’ side? The broken ring might be a key symbol in this. And don’t forget that Misao has yet to cut her hair and change her appearance. And the fact that there still is a fairly large amount of episodes left.

The last part also showed this when Itoki comes back, and this time actually gets serious. She isn’t the playful person she was in the first season, and she actually declares war on both Washuu and Daimon. She uses some kind of water-magic to create a huge dragon, trap Daimon and surround Sasami, Monta and the others. When Tsukasa starts to blame a witch for the strange water which showed up, Misao moves further away from the others again. She still sees the witches as her dear friends.

I’m also loving the quirks of Sasami with her almost limitless amount of enthusiasm and Anri with her silly fangirling over Tsukasa more and more. ^^ Great series, great episode.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 16 – Surprisingly Dark Story

Okay, this story just keeps getting more and more interesting. And remember that we’re only at episode 3 of 13, which means that there’s still a lot that has to happen. This was another episode with difficult dialogue, so I didn’t pick up everything. Especially the plans of the magic people are still a mystery to me, though by the looks of it, they plan to actually use Sasami and the others for their goals.

We start the episode with Sasami’s father revealing that he actually does come from the magic world, or that he can at least use magic. He definitely wants to save Sasami and the others, and comes up with a plan. We then switch to Sasami and the others, along with Itoki and the others. There’s its demonstrated what the power of the members of the mahou shoujo club combined can actually manage. Quite an explosion follows.

Misao, also, is changing. More than anyone else. For one of the first times, she actually has people who care for her, and give her attention. She’s also been progressing more than any other because of this. This issue definitely will get worse as the anime progresses. Last episode also showed that she’s growing way from Sasami more and more. Her broken ring, which breaks during this episode, is only more proof of this.

Sasami’s father’s plan: Washuu and Daimon go and rescue the girls, while he himself goe to check up on Amitabu. I’m not sure what his link is in this, didn’t manage to pick that one up. Meanwhile, it’s become evening, and Sasami hears Amitabu’s harp again, so she heads out. Ryouki meanwhile acts as bait, while Washuu and Daimon sneak into the dormitories. They wake up the four remaining girls, and urge them to leave the magical world, not stating their reasons. Misao refuses in the beginning, seeing as everyone has been treating her so kindly. In the end, Washuu pushes her to go anyway.

We then switch to Sasami’s father, who arrives at a huge tree. In this tree, a second Amitabu has been captured in thorns. That means that there are two of them, one who’s been dancing with Sasami and who met Sasami’s father at the beach, and the one who’s been caught in thorns. Just what is the meaning of this. Has it already been revealed, or is it supposed to be a mystery? (*kicks lack of Japanese*)

Sasami, meanwhile, runs into the other Amitabu, playing on his harp again. The meeting started very cute, but took a surprising twist when Amitabu learned of Sasami’s father. (Apparently, he’s named Ginji). He suddenly turns serious, grabs her and flies off.

After this, Washuu really came in her element, when she guided Tsukasa, Anri, Misao and Makoto back to the entrance of the human world. She looked almost freaky in her desires to keep the girls safe. She meets up with Ginji, who discovers that Sasami’s gone. The latter then goes to look for her and sees Amitabu fly through the sky with Sasami in his arms. Sasami, however, isn’t scared at all. She’s after all, still in love with him, and actually falls asleep in his arms.

I think that in the past, Ginji and Amitabu had some kind of history, in which they were close friends. Ginji then did something along the lines of abandoning Amitabu. That’s what made him so happy when he saw him again, though I think that Amitabu still has a grudge against him. But what does this have to do with the bridge from the magical world to the human world? And what role do the demons have in this picture?

I absolutely loved the following scene. Washuu and the others have to jump off a considerably high cliff in order to flee to the human world. Washuu tries to act all brave, though when she attempts to catch the jumping Tsukasa, she most probably made some miscalculations. Whent hey almost reached the gate, the other witches arrive. Ginji, meanwhile, caught up with Amitabu, who confirms even more that he was left alone. But for some reason, this Amitabu speaks in third person.

Washuu, meanwile, uses a strange grenade which creates another link to the human world. Ginji, Amitabu and Sasami arrive as well. The head witch tries to stop them, though for some reason, she doesn’t want to go against either Ginji or Amitabu. Washuu, Daimon, Ginji and the girls then head to the human world, and Sasami says goodbye to Amitabu, who flies off afterwards.

We end the episode at some kind of witch council. It’s surrounded by white trees, and a strange voice sounds. He keeps calling certain persons traitors. He also says something completely inaudible.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 09-13 and 15 – Someone Sub This. Seriously.

Okay, and I managed to catch up. And this show really has set such an incredibly good atmosphere for the final half of the series. Seriously, Sasami and Ani-chan are still dancing in my mind.

Episodes 9-13 continued to develop the girls. While they weren’t as emotional as the four episodes before, they still were great to watch. Washuu, Tsukasa, Misao and Sasami all got an episode dedicated. A few important things happened. First of all, when Washuu was threatened to leave the Mahou Shoujo Club, everyone started yelling. But for some reason, Sasami started glowing. Then, a few episodes later, Sasami mentions, half-asleep, Ani-chan in front of her father. It seems that her father also knows Ani-chan, and this made him go to the magical world. Then, in episode 12 Sasami and Misao actually reveal to Monta that they can use magic when Misao tries to confess to him. The first series ends with a rather scary image of Ani-chan being captured in thorns. Just what exactly was he doing?

Still, most of the first season revolved around developing the girls. With the second season, an actual plot came forward. First of all, Itaki took Sasami and the others with her to the magical world for a certain reason. If I understood things correctly, the people from the magical world are planning to separate all connections to the human world. I think they feel that the human world is evil, so it has to be separated. This can promise to be very interesting.

And seriously, why does Misao and Sasami’s relationship remind me so much of Narutaru? Cheerful girl becomes friends with shy girl, the two become best friends, and now it even seems that Misao’s going to cut her hair at one point (see: OP and ED).

In episode 15, it also became clear that Ani-chan actually is a good acquaintance of Sasami’s father. It also seems that he, Washuu and Daimon will be trying to stop the complot. I’m not sure exactly what, but I do suspect that that tree which sealed away some kind of evil has something to do with it.

I really like the direction this anime went: 13 episodes of introducing and fleshing out characters so that afterwards, the plot can really be introduced. I’m also hoping for Himawari to take the same path. But still, there’s one huge disadvantage of this, as this series has been so incredibly ignored. Someone sub this. Seriously.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 05 – 08 – This series turned out great. ^^

Whoa… I never thought that this show would be this emotional. The past few episodes have truly been excellent. We’ve got three episodes dedicated to Sasami and one to Misao. And especially the last two were just stunning.

A few names: Monta is Sasami’s male classmate, who seems to have an eye on her. Itoki is the rather energetic female who seems to cling to both Washuu and Daimon. Amitabu, or Ami-chan is the mysterious guy (yes, guy) who appeared in the second season in front of Sasami’s father. The reason he’s so mysterious becomes clear in episode six. During her stay in the magical world, Sasami runs into him, and immediately falls in love. The creators managed to bring the encounter between these two in an extremely cute and touching way, able to rival Akazukin.

But that’s not all, the creators went even further in episode 7, when Sasami returns and starts to miss him. The full episode got dedicated to Sasami’s lovesickness, and because the show took its time with these scenes, they turned out awesome. Monta also played a role in this. One thing I really liked about this episode was the fact that it didn’t really have one climax. It’s just one big chunk of emotions, it really created an atmosphere which lasted for the entire episode.

And then to think that episode eight was even better. ^^ It focuses on Misao, and her relationships with her other classmates. There’s going to be a school fair, and the class is to get split in four groups, with each group organizing its own stand. Unfortunately, the groups get decided on random. With this, the inevitable had to happen: Misao and Sasami ending up in different groups. Sasami is in a group with Monta, while Misao comes in the group with Chie and Kozue.

In Sasami’s group, everything goes fine. Sasami’s enthusiasm leads them to making a food stand and the group has lots of fun in the process. Misao, however, has more problems. On top of the fact that she’s incredibly shy, she’s in a group with people she doesn’t know well, consisting out of Chie and Kozue and a couple of demotivated wannabe-punks. The latter have no motivation to come with initiatives, so Chie and Kozue end up taking the lead. They, however, lack Sasami’s enthusiasm, so they go for something basic: an accessory shop. Preparing these accessories didn’t really look like a fun task, as the wannabe-punks were really ruining the mood.

Misao, however, does attempt to get closer to her classmates. Likely inspired by Sasami. As she’s too scared to do anything with people around her, she takes some beads home, and starts making them after school, with nobody watching her. She’s actually pretty good at this, and she puts a great deal of time into creating a great deal of rather pretty-looking accessories. Guess what happens when she comes to school at the day of the fair? Suddenly, the group has decided to quit the accessories, and go for a white t-shirt shop. Everyone in the group was phoned about this, except Misao. (excuses like, “I thought she would phone her”). Misao was so sad to see at that time. The episode ended in a beautiful way when Sasami and the other members of the mahou shoujo club attempt to brighten her mood a bit.

I knew it was a good idea to check out this series. It’s not just cute, it really showed that its characters are awesome.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 03 and 04 – The team is complete

This is probably the first time I’ve done two episodes in one post, but as I’m going to have to catch up to an entire season, things are more convenient to post them in batches. The third and fourth episode introduce the two final member of the mahou shoujo club: Tsukasa and Anri.

The third episode was rather bland. Washuu comes up with a few costumes, and the rest of the episode is spent on Sasami’s strange running behaviour and the introduction of Tsukasa. It seems that she’s a silent girl, because of her overly protective father. But the way she acted was nowhere as enjoyable as in the second season.

But with the fourth episode, the fun returned. First of all, it featured a rather difficult to follow discussion between Washu and Sasami’s father. I couldn’t understand all of it, but from the things I understood it seems that the two of them knew each other. I think that Washuu once was the underclassman of Sasami’s father, which suggests that he too can use magic. When the magic users went to their realm, some of them returned to the human world, in order to live with them. In this story, certain storytellers were important, and Washuu is one of these storytellers. In an even harder-to-follow part afterwards, the three discuss the dangers involved in everything. It actually seemed pretty serious. Could be interesting for the later episodes. Sasami then asks her father to go to the magical world as well, though he reckons that she won’t manage to do it.

Back to Anri. While Tsukasa seemed rather bland during the previous episode, this episode really showed that she can work great when combined with the other characters. Especially when Anri turned out to be an actual fangirl of her. She’s also got a rather strange power: give letters, written on paper a physical form. These letters then appear on top of Sasami and the other’s heads, literally. Quite a hilarious sight.

It was quite funny to see that Tsukasa grabbed a witch’s hat in order to cover it, and Makoto tried to do this with a party hat. Basically, Anri did all of this because they were too suspiciously friendly around Tsukasa (who keeps ignoring her, by the way ^^;). What follows is quite a hilarious chase to get Anri to remove all the annoying letters from their head.

Overall, Tsukasa and Anri are some very nice characters when you combine them with the other ones. Next episode introduces Washuu’s friend, the one from the karaoke. It seems that the two have a long history together.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 02 – Garbage Anime Doesn’t Mean Garbage Spinoff

Oh, the irony. The beautiful irony. As this is a spinoff of Tenchi Muyo, I decided to check out what the show was about. After all, Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club turned out good, so perhaps Tenchi Muyo would be worth the watch as well. So, what do I get?
– Male main character;
– Releases strange girl from crypt;
– Is descendant of alien royalty;
– Gets chased by a bunch of girls, among which a space-pirate, two alien princesses and a space detective;
– All of these women falls in love with him;

I’m not going to even bother giving Tenchi Muyo a chance. With this bad of a concept, I can’t imagine how horrible the execution might’ve been. It seems that Sasami was one of the characters in Tenchi Muyo, and she now has her own anime. This shows that you can really create good anime out of garbage ones. It just depends on where you put the focus. ^^;

Anyay, about the episode. it was pretty funny. Washuu first starts by explaining a bit about Sasami and Misao’s background. At one time, wizards and normal humans just lived along with each other, but then the humans began to find the wizards strange, and after a while, the wizards were chased out of their territory. The witches then decided to hide their powers and mingle in with the humans. Apparently, both Misao and Sasami are descendants of these witches. This also raises some questions about Sasami’s father. It seems that he knows an awful lot about the magical world and the witches. He probably told Sasami not to show her powers to anyone outside of the house because he knew of this legend. If that’s the case, then where did he hear it?

The first lesson consists out of creating a typical magical girl-team pose. Yeah, Washuu’s idea. The janitor seems to be some kind of assistant for Washuu, not sure about his exact role. I think his name is Daimon, or something that sounds like it. The way to get out of the strange dimension also is a strange one. No teleportation whatsoever. Someone has to throw down a rope, the old-fashioned way. The pet, by the way, is named Ryouki. I liked, by the way, the fact that the cute pet of the series isn’t owned by the main character. It’s a good to have these things, which actually try to be different than usual.

This episode also introduced the third member of the Mahou Shoujo Club. Makoto. She’s a bit different from the version we saw in the second season, a bit more chaotic, and easily embarrassed, I think. Her power is that she can increase or decrease her size at random moments. I guess that during the first season, she’ll learn how to control these powers. She’s also got a rather strange toilet-problem, which I’d rather ignore.

The unnamed boy we’ve been seeing is apparently being known as Danshi. He’s got an eye on Sasami, though she doesn’t notice anything. Judging by the things I saw in the second season, the rest of the episodes will probably change his image of her a great deal.

I also loved the pieces of comedy thrown in during the episode. For example when Daimon tries to do something about the fact that trying to come out of the hole is rather troublesome, as we see him carry a whole pile of creative ways to get upstairs, or when Sasami and Misao were attacked by a piece of gymnastics-equipment ^^;

Next episode, the pink-haired girl will arrive. From what I’ve seen from the second season, she’ll make a nice addition to the Club.

Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club – 01 – Surprise of the Month

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

I post about Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club, and suddenly, six months after it originally aired, the first subs appear. At times like these, you begin to question coincidence. ^^;

Anyway, I’m going to be blogging this series in a strange way. As I still have to catch up on the first series, I’m going to watch both seasons right through each other. At this point, I’m not having any hopes for more subs to come out, so the rest of the episodes I’ll be watching will probably be done raw.

About the series: I think I understand why so many people were turned off. First of all, the promo-art. It didn’t really manage to portray the cuteness in this show. In fact, it turned out rather ugly. And second of all, most of the ones who actually did see the first episodes were probably turned off by the first scene of the first episode. It’s not really a bad scene, but it was in a way a very childish one.

It also doesn’t happen often when the voice-acting in a series impresses me. If I recall correctly, only Disgaea did this so far. But I have to say that the voices used in Sasami Mahou Shoujo-club work great. They may take some time to get used to, but they fit the characters very well. I’m also surprised to see that even though this is meant for children, the girls don’t have such high-pitched voices. You don’t see that often.

Okay, a small summary. We start out at a regular morning, and it immediately becomes clear that Sasami likes cooking. What’s even cuter is that her mother actually tries to help her, but only ends up making a ribbon-shape carrot. This show also derives from most other shows when it seems that Sasami’s already able to use a bit of magic, instead of the whole “awakening”-process most anime attempt. It seems that her parents know about it, and she had to promise that she wouldn’t use any magic outside of the house.

Sasami’s father seems to be some kind of writer of books about a magical world (with a sloppy handwriting, by the way). In the second season, we see him on a deserted island. Was he collecting research material in there?

Sasami’s friends then come to pick her up to go to school. They’re starting a new grade, apparently (fifth grade). It also seems that a new infirmary teacher has arrived. On their way to school, they run into a very shy, blue haired girl (Shinohara). She avoids everyone, though Sasami tries to make contact anyway. Shinohara then runs away. A chase follows to a construction site, where the teacher is watching them. I’m not sure why, but she decides to drop a giant, bouncing black ball on them. Sasami tries to protect Shinohara, though as it was a “bouncing” ball, it just bounces out of view. Therefore, it seems that seems that Sasami (who had to endure some injuries, by the way) just tried to attack Shinohara.

We then switch to the opening ceremony. The teacher is about to be introduced, though then it seems that she can’t make it for some reason. Sasami wants to find out this reason, so she uses her injuries as an excuse to check out the new teacher. This turns out to be a rather frightful experience. ^^

Back to classes, the same boy we saw in the first episode of the second season appeared. I loved the parody on fanservice-anime the creators slipped in. We’ve got another one of those perverted boys, who try to find a sneaky way to get some free pantyshots of his teacher. Today’s plan: mirror on shoe. Then it turns out that the teacher forgot her skirt, rendering trick useless. I could be wrong, but this one was actually one of the first parodies like these which actually worked. Though I am worried why Sasami seemed to support the kid. The two could be childhood friends. After all, he is going to find out her secret at some point.

Also, any anime mentioning “Otoko no Romance” is pure win.

Later, the teacher hands out information about the different clubs which can be joined. Sasami and her friends will be joining the cooking club, it seems that they’re all good at it. We then turn to the school break. The guy from the second season seems to be the janitor of the school. Sasami always seems to eat lunch with him. He also loves her father’s books, and he therefore is very grateful to her that he gets the chance to see his works, before they even hit the stores. But then the first problem of the show appears. Sasami feels that these books somehow hurt her. It seems she doesn’t like the way he criticises her. Could be great for future moments.

Shinohara then enters the room. It seems she also liked Sasami’s father’s work, and she seems to be lending the books from the guy before (is it me, or was his name never given?) She then runs away immediately. We then switch to the cooking club. The infirmary teacher, or Kozuka Washuu, appears to be the one to look over things. She then decides to thin out the group by making them prepare a rather unorthodox dish: her pet. The little guy escapes (probably on purpose) and Sasami and Shinohara end up chasing it. The little animal will be in trouble if Washuu catches it first, so the two of them decide to catch it before she does.

The pet ran into the janitor’s house, does something strange and opens a closet which brings Sasami and Shinohara towards some kind of other dimension. Then, we get some background info about Shinohara, and we find the reason why she avoids everyone. She possesses some kind of black thingies who come out of her when she’s scared. Because of that, people at her previous school looked down on her. Quite interesting indeed.

They then come to another room, at which they find a door, painted on the wall. The pet then appears again, and suddenly starts turning into a huge size. Both Sasami and Shinohara (or Misao) try to use their powers, but they aren’t rather experienced enough to really do something. it then turned out that everything was a test by Washuu, in order to determine whether they’re good enough for the cooking club, otherwise known as the mahou shoujo club. And now we also know where the name of this anime comes from. ^^;

I never imagined how incredibly likable Sasami turned out. Not only is her character design very cute, even despite the fact that she wears very plain clothes, but she also has a very lively, three-dimensional personality. Okay, so what if this is an anime for children. It’s very fun to watch. ^_^
