I realized that while Fire Force has had many of the shounen troupes (some ad nauseam- see Cat girl), it’s been missing a training arc. We had a tournament really early on (that got kind of derailed), we’ve had fanservice, fights, enemies-turned-friends….but we haven’t had a good, ole-fashioned, protag powerup. Well, this week, we get it – and with the strongest Fire Soldier too!

Fire Force 17 – Black and White, and Grey
Oh Fire Force. Every episode it seems you do 5 things right…and three things wrong. Every single one is on the verge of greatness, but very few cross over. Let’s take a look!

Fire Force – 16 [We are Family]
This episode of Fire Force…was all over the place. I can’t decide if the show loses points for being so absurd or gains them back for being self-aware. At any rate, we have some back stabbing, some donkey riding, and … Shinra, you’re killing me here.

Fire Force – 15 [Blacksmith’s Dream]
Fire Force has officially kicked off their second cour, and it comes complete with new songs, new characters, and new insights into the world. Here we go!

Fire Force – 14 [For Whom the Flame Burns]
I’m going to consider this the finale of Fire Force. You know those complaints about fight scene choreography I had in previous episodes? The reason for the problems was everyone was working on this episode. Seriously, I actually watched this one twice. Fire Force is on an upwards trajectory and I’m pumped!

Fire Force – 13 [The Trap is Set]
So this is the finale of the first half of Fire Force…and it doesn’t really feel like a finale at all. But that’s okay! It’s one of the better episodes we’ve seen from our 8th brigade so far – mainly because it feels as though some of the fight scene animation demons have been (partially) exorcised this week. Let’s go!

Fire Force 12 – Eve of Hostilities in Asakusa
Welcome back to Beni town! After a two week break, Fire Force has awkwardly picked back up with its penultimate episode (for the first cour). Missed Shinra and the gang? Unfortunately, there’s some Catgirl this week, but aside from that, we have another solid effort all around. Let’s get into it!

Fire Force – 11 [Formation of Company 8 / The Mightiest Hikeshi]
Unlike other shows I’m watching, Fire Force seems to be hitting stride right at the end of the season. I still argue this show is best in episodes like this one – minimal fight scenes, which they struggle with, and limited catgirl.

Fire Force – 9/10 [Spreading Malice/Promise]
Fire Force is an anime that shows more than it tells. For that reason, I’ve saved up two episodes to have something more to talk about than a simple recap. Let’s go!

Fire Force – 8 [Infernal Insects]
Well then! Fire Force is moving along at a brisk pace. Most other shows draw out the suspense of “whodunit” for at least a few episodes. Fire Force? Nope, it took like one and a half. Also this episode included the cat girl – and…it was well done. I found myself actually cheering for her character, despite absolutely loathing her for the past 7 episodes.
