Carole & Tuesday – 15/16 [God Only Knows/ A Natural Woman]

The last two episodes of Carole & Tuesday give the focus on 2 one-off characters, and frankly it doesn’t surprise me that these characters leave a much bigger impact than our central characters. Both Desmond and Flora have so much screen presence and the way the approach music, as well as how music affects their lives, leave something substantial to talk about. The show also provides a rare occasion where I greatly enjoy the whole music playing in these episodes. The music feel grandeur, and they pack with emotions unlike those songs from Angela. Not only do they serve as interesting characters on their own, they help broadening Carole & Tuesday’s own approach into music. As a whole, Carole & Tuesday the series sadly trades any thematic complexity for accessibility. If you were looking for a show with depth, you might come off disappointed.

In episode 15, our team receives an invitation from Desmond, one-of-a-kind gender-ambiguous legendary singer from Mars. There’s a lot to like from his character here, from the “egg” glasshouse design to his character design, as well as his musical style. For Desmond, he sings for the person he loves, he sings as a way to live and we can see how he’s basically exist just to sing and express his love through music. That’s the purest form of expression, I believe. He takes a liking to our duo and they serve as the witness to his final performance before his light’s out. If I put what I feel about his character into 1 word, that would be “beautiful”.

Fiora’s one word, one the other hand, would be “tragic”. She’s the one who has the talent, she’s the one who makes it big into the music world from scratch. But by doing that she has to give up to the person who cares for her the most, and to her relationship to the music. To the point now she’s broken, can’t perform anymore and even hearing about music could hurt her. That’s some pretty neat stuff there, especially the lingering feeling between her and Gus. Fiona’s circumstance, and Angela’s, further establish the dark side of being famous: drug-abuse, loneliness, stalker, I just hope the show does a proper job regarding that aspect, especially in Angela’s case.

Whereas we still in an episodic manner at the moment, the plot regarding Tuesday’s Mom could potentially be the main conflict as Carole & Tuesday the series moves along. If her anti-immigrant proposal comes to pass (which eerily resembles our current world), it will directly affect Carole who is an Earth refugee.
