Short Synopsis: Birdy meets her childhood friend again.
Overall Enjoyment Value: 8,5/10 (Awesome)
Whoa!
I somewhat expected that the second season would be better than the first, but such a huge difference in quality, I never saw coming. The first two episodes were quiet and set up the basic premise for this series, with lots of Senkawa behind his teen-aged self. The second season however, immediately jumps into the action, the animation is consistently awesome, rather than usually average with awesome animation for the big action-scenes. Seriously, it looks like the second season is going to top the first season in just about every aspect, and with a bit of luck it’s going to be the best of the sequels that started airing in this Winter-season.
But my favourite change: Senkawa. The past two episodes showed no intention whatsoever to drag on his romantic relationship. In fact, it’s time for Birdy to have her romance, and that one’s also looking much more interesting than the romance of the first season. On top of that, Senkawa is now more experienced in love matters, so he can actually give Birdy a bit of advice here and there.
This episode also showed: the director of this series definitely also did Noein. The animation was fantastic, even during the quiet parts the characters are drawn in a very messy style, but this way they gestures and motions have extra expressivity, and they really make the cast come alive this time. It doesn’t make for the best screenshots, though. ^^;
I also love it when the writers go creative with ring-tones. It may be something small, but it’s fun to see what kind of tune the character in question has chosen, and it’s even small things like these that add to the fleshing out the character. It’s amazing how Natoru has only appeared for 2 episodes, and he already feels like a regular member of the cast. Especially during the big fight scene at the end of this episode. That was seriously brutal! Seriously, this second season has buckets of potential.
It sure has had a wonderfull start. I’m quite sure we will have some great moments with Birdy in the coming episodes.
Do you think the ending video changes every episode, since it was different than in the first episode?
Also, I hope anything too bad doesn’t happen to Senkawa. In the opening he seems rather gloomy and he is in that greyish colour at one point during the opening.
Now that this show focuses on Birdy, it’s rocketing forward. It’s also interesting to see how this gang of villains is already being chopped down, rather than a single/double death after some dramatic mini arc in an attempt to drag out the airtime of overdeveloped villains.
And holy balls, the animation! The messy style really adds character and impact to the scenes in this show, the action in this was superb. I am really getting to like the work of Shingo Yamashita.
This series really does have a new atmosphere, and it’s looking great. The lack of attention this show gets is criminal, though.
I’m really glad BIRDY is in a second half-season.
It was my sentimental favorite last time: I’ve always liked Birdy’s character design and situation since the OAV, and the TV series is just loads better anyway. Not sure why I like Birdy as a character design so much – she just seems to be very expressively animated. And has nice eyes.
Hope to see more Shion as well – it would be funny to see Senkawa having to deal with being a part-time idol when in Birdy’s body.
nirgilis rock. Why am I intensely addicted to their 80’s beatish rock style?
So far I’m liking this season a lot, but really, why does it have to fall prey to such petty flaws? I totally hate every scene with Senkawa’s classmates, they’re useless, stupid, boring, cliched… And many more derogatory adjectives I won’t list right now. And also the guy from the first season, whose name I don’t even know… The one who wrote the book on aliens. He should have died at the end of season one or something.
And also, to some lesser degree, I resent the fact that Birdy and Nataru met by chance, AND that Nataru’s father just happened to be the one who gave the fugitives the devices to hide… But I can overlook it, as I guess things like this are much harder to prevent, or properly plan
those flaw ain’t flaw. just continue watching
Perrin4869 want to answer why it not. however I don’t want to spoil anything
OK, maybe I did jump into conclusions about Nataru (and please, don’t spoil it for me!), but are you serious about Senkawa’s classmates not being a flaw?
I don’t really like them either. but it understandable because this being an adaptation.
Senkawa classmates are in fact main character from the manga.
