I’m reviewing this episode a day late, but still: there are two shows who, on the same day, decide to air an episode that feature an alien just arriving and goofing off while trying to make sense of this new world.
The big difference between the two is that the alien in question had never met a girl in his life, and therefore was constantly dazzled by all of the girls here. The creators also waste no time in creating another couple in this series, as the frog doll girl immediately starts hitting on him (and vice versa).
With this, it really seems that this show is going for the couple root. That leaves a few oddballs: Shrade, the fangirl, Mikono’s brother, and the green haired girl. I do not feel like looking up all of their names right now. Aside from the fangirl, there strangely hasn’t been any hint that they will hit it off somehow, but I can really see this series trying. Especially Shrade seems weird in a series like this that is so focused on romance. Mikono’s brother and the green-haired girl meanwhile are just pointless love triangle bait for the main characters. They should just hook up together and everything will be solved. (Well, maybe not everything, but you get the point).
What also surprised me here was the complete lack of action in this series. This is Satelight. I’d at least have figured that the creators would stuff in a random reason to show another overblown fight, but instead this was all character-building. It wasn’t exactly the most interesting or exciting episode of this series, but this show will be 2 cours long. I’m intrigued in how the build-up will pay off.
Rating: * (Good)
Oh come on. Shrade has Cayenne (Mikono’s brother) and the fangirl has Shrade x Cayenne (or the other way around). This leaves Zessica… I wonder what role she will play, given that it’s been 10 episodes and the love triangle she’s in is still very much one-sided.
ahaha, just saw that comment *g*
no, no, it’s definitly CayennexShrade!
Frigging Yaoi fangirls….
What’s wrong with Cayenne/Shrade? No, really? Are homosexual pairings something so unnatural that they should be confined to specific anime catering exclusively to those with that fetish? Grow up.
Eventhough I would love to see a rarely yaoi couple in robot animes, I doubt it’ll happen anyway Anca. I’m sure it’s just going to be fanserv for females fans/watchers only since even in the first series, it’s just undertones/undeveloped&the main emphasis still the main hetero couple anyway(not that I didn’t like it, I still like the series anyway). Heck, I’m not even surprise (if) by the end of this series they’re going to pair up Cayenne w/ Sazanka, supposedly they’re going w/ the scenario of making Shrade died, since the main target of EVOL still mostly male otaku’s anyway&I’m sure plenty of them wouldn’t want to see any yaoi pair in their animes, it’s different if it’s just tiny hints/undertones, many animes like G.Seed, 00, Geass, etc did it anyway.
I realise that, I’m just fed up with this blatant unapologetic discriminatory attitude everywhere.
…might be because I’ve been following the reactions to that Mass Effect 3 announcement thing. Eh.
Other than Cayenne seeming like he is 100% hetero , nothing is wrong with it. Having two side character form a homosexual couple doesn’t make it yaoi. To me it just makes things more realistic as gay people do exist in large numbers in the world.
And even Cayenne can be gay. Seems 100% straight to me , but there have been plenty of athletes and military personnel that we wouldn’t be able to tell if they were gay
Damn those frigging yaoi fangirls, now you’ll have to cope with the idea of a male character being less than 100% straight. Too much, it’s too much.
I think I’ll care when I see people like you whining about hot girl on girl action and subtext.
And people criticize me when I talk down on female fanservice…
Listen, I don’t mind homosexuality in anime. You didn’t hear my whining when No.6 aired.(Or did I whine…I can’t remember) But listen, there are doujins for this crap. I hate the way that two guys in an anime can’t have a friendship or rivalry without being suspected of doing it. Light and L were not gay. And Izaya and Shizuo? Oh god, who the hell even thinks that’s possible?
The point is you all want me to shut up so you can keep daydreaming that those two guys start making out. And that’s just sad.
Meh, girl on girl gets boring after the first three minutes.
Aidan: The original author of Durarara!! wrote a yaoi piece about Izaya and Shizou for the 1st of April edition of the magazine he’s published in. I don’t care about Izaya/Shizou or Light/L either, but that’s not the point.
Another thing I’m indifferent about at this point is Cayenne/Shrade. Nobody suspects they’re ‘doing it’ either, they just hope they WILL be ‘doing it’ in the future, no different from how others want Amata to ‘do’ – or rather, get together with – Mikono or Zessica. What’s the difference between Amata/Zessica and Cayenne/Shrade? Neither pairing is likely to happen. Both pairings have subtext. But for one of them people who don’t like the pairing just go on with their lives, and for the other people stop and start talking about how wrong and disgusting it and its sympathizers are. I don’t know what your reaction to No.6 was, but you have to remember the number of people who cried about disgusting yaoi when it aired. Even 4chan is more tolerant to the idea of homosexuality than non-cesspool forums, and that’s just sad.
Added to that you have pretty much nothing but friendship/rivalry between males in anime, with few cases. And even those – is No.6 known as a series about toppling a dystopian government? Nope, it’s yaoi. IS Mirage of Blaze about the reincarnations of some famous historical figures from the Sengoku era, mostly action? Of course not, it’s yaoi. Loveless? Haha, yaoi. Even so, MoB was a weak adaptation and Togainu no Chi was a disaster. Because people know it won’t sell. Because of this ‘wrong’ mindset. (I strongly suspect Simoun didn’t sell for the same reason, as female/female isn’t quite as widely accepted as the internet makes it out to be either).
I’m honestly surprised X and Peacemaker Kurogane somehow escaped this reputation.
And it’s not about being boring or not. Nobody says guy/girl ‘gets boring after a few minutes’, unless they’re talking about porn.
…apologies for using this as my soapbox.
Anca: “The original author of Durarara!! wrote a yaoi piece about Izaya and Shizou for the 1st of April edition of the magazine he’s published in.”
And that has about as much relevance as a frigging doujin. Did he write that they were gay in the official story? Answer, no. In fact he took the piss out of yaoi fangirls thinking they were gay.
As for your second paragraph…yep missing my entire point. My issue is finding homosexual tones in something that simply doesn’t have them and not homosexuality itself. Is yeah…that paragraph doesn’t apply to me.
No.6 is known for it’s yaoi because that’s it’s defining feature. I said this before but it’s story has been done before. Even before that train wreck of an ending the story was just medicore. The only thing that made it different was that it had a gay couple. That’s it. As for Mirage of Blaze, I looked it up on google and was plastered with images of guys kissing and being shirtless. I get the feeling you are ignoring the core reason for it being known as yaoi. Loveless has the same problem. If they didn’t want to be seen as yaoi then they wouldn’t advertise it as such.
And Simoun wasn’t that great. I give it credit for being different but the story sort of unravelled at the end. Plus not great animation.
That girl on girl comment wasn’t directed at you.
Seeya.
About Mirage of Blaze: and that proves my point. The main series had like one kiss, and the pairing wasn’t even particularly romantic because only one of the two guys involved was actually in love, or even interested in the other. The OVAs had a slightly more explicit scene… which was still not romantic in any way, shape or form, and only pushed the two characters further apart. I don’t think they ever got together in the novels either.
And yet, it’s remembered as yaoi.
No.6 was way more ‘boy love’ than it, and it wasn’t even a romance series.
As the first Aquarion Evol episode without a big battle, this episode showed me that it could be done, and it could be enjoyable.
I too found it funny for a baddie to be mingling good guys just like Rinne no Lagrange’s last episode. In Jin’s case, he isn’t just randomly wandering off, but has distinct mission: to observe the girls and look for potential True Eves.
It’s ironic that among all the physically and psychologically intimidating women Jin encounters, the one he chooses to almost abduct is Yunoha, who beat him while she was in Aquarion. Yunoha for her part is far less irritating than her intro episode for reasons we can’t discern – maybe because she’s gaining confidence and isn’t cloaking all the time.
Jin’s desire to protect her awakens an element power we don’t think he had before, but we like how his true intentions remain ambiguous. Was he going to abduct her, or just talk?
wait, you seriously don’t see that they are trying to hook Shrade up with Cayenne (Mikono’s brother) ? that’s sooo~ obvious ~__^
i love this girl voiced by Megumi Nakajima who is constantly
thinking about the boys being uke or seme!
the music this episode was again excellent!
This was an great episode, it was actually very understandable that Jin would be attracted to Yunoha, since they are similar, but at the same time, want different things. But he was going after her because of her power, only at the end that he started having some kind of feeling he can’t yet grasp, like shown at the preview.
It was an nice seeing that, because the villains are seriouisly lacking in the personality department.
The original series also spent a lot of time on their characters rather than the titular robot(though the genesis part was also crucial). The fights are there just to reinforce the points of the episode and to give us some sweet eye candy.
By the way psgels, I’ve been getting up to speed on the original and if you feel like watching the very camp predecessor to this show, you’ll get a new layer of interesting things about this show. These characters are all connected to those of the original series as per reincarnation.
lol stfu, their bromance is real ok
