Another – 08

Thank god this wasn’t just another copy-paste beach episode. This episode felt unique, which just shows that beach episodes are usually terrible in how often they just boil down to the same thing. This episode didn’t bother with suggestive camera angles, and didn’t make a whole spectacle of “what will they be wearing?”, but rather showed the characters as they were. My only complaint here is that twintail girl suddenly turning abusive tsundere. Where did that come from?

Because of this I enjoyed this episode for its variety. With so much death around the corner it’s good to have episodes where the scenery is completely different. That’s something I miss in a lot of anime nowadays: they often feel rather monotone. Another obviously is too, but this episode definitely helped there.

I also loved the use of red herrings i this episode. There first was that truck, the cast catching a puffer fish and suggesting to actually cook it, and then there was that swimming scene. It got a bit surreal when that motor boat appeared right from out of nowhere. With this it’s clear that the ghost has some magic Deus ex Machina powers that can bend all common sense.

This is just a detail, but it does make me wonder: to their trip (which by the way actually had a purpose), the cast came in two cars. One of them was driven by Reiko, but the other one? We hardly see any shots of this random old man, as if the camera tries its best to ignore him. Also, when they arrive, Misaki Mei was already at the beach. Why didn’t she just come with them? It’s a bit weird to not have introduction scenes like that.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Well, the twintails girl telegraphed “TSUNDERE” to me from episode one, even if she missed the dere part. I mean, come on, twintails, arms constantly akimbo or crossed, cold attitude…

  2. Mei didn’t come with them because she was supposed to be on vacation with her family and, coincidentally, their cottage happened to be in the same area.

  3. I’m pretty sure the other driver was Akazawa’s father (obviously an unimportant character, so why introduce him?), she also said ‘my car’. This wasn’t an official school trip so even if it’s not her father, most likely he is one of their relatives (father/uncle).

  4. Yeah, I thought this was the creepiest beach episode ever… Surprised they managed to keep the same mood as the rest of the episodes

Even though they were all cheerful and playing around, I kept waiting for something to go wrong…

Anyway, arent the deaths supposed to stop working once youre outside of the town? At least I thought the whole point of the trip was to get away from it all…

    1. One of the students said they thought the deaths would stop because they were out of town but then again everything they ‘know’ about the curse is just theory.

  5. There’s a shot of the motor boat speeding in the background part of the way through the episode while Reiko and Matsunaga are talking. Little bit of foreshadowing there.

Also, Misaki said last episode that she’d be going on a trip with her family even though she didn’t want to, remember? It just so happened to be the same place the class came.

  6. Finally watched it. Best beach episode ever that i can recall. I have watched and forgotten a ton of anime so maybe there was a better one somewhere but this was great.

And i’m so glad that i didn’t read the source material before i watched this anime.

  7. I looked through the episodes with a fine toothed comb and I think Ive figured it out somewhat. . .don’t worry I wont spoil it or tell you who the “dead one is” . . .especially as I could be wrong but. . . if you want to try and figure it out, I would pay attention to EVERYTHING the grandfather sitting at the shrine in his house says, listen to/read the subs of EVERY LINE. There are some other hints too, but that would give it away if I gave you those hints that the anime already put in. Basically, if you listen to the grandfather, you will be able to see all the other hints. . . .Which I think is pretty awesome

      1. no, you need to look at all the PREVIOUS episodes, and just listen to what the grandfather (and to some extent the bird but not as much) is saying, and you’ll figure it out.

The one thing about these types of stories is the creators ALWAYS give you hints, and pretty much what the grandfather is saying pretty much gives it away if you pay attention and think a little.

  8. Perhaps the deaths aren’t focused around the village but around the another?

That would imply that the another was on the trip. Of course this death could have been a normal death just as well.

By the way, the boat could be seen earlier in the episode. It was foreshadowed.

On another note, if the curse stopped halfway in the year of the aunt, does the another disappear mid year? On another note, both Akazawa and the aunt remember meeting people who do not remember that. What’s up with that? It’s getting more and more likely that the another is the twin-tails girl and the aunt of their respective year. At least in my far fetched reasoning.

    1. just go back and watch over the stuff I talked about. It’s all there and this ep helped me to figure out other stuff too.

    2. Who does the aunt remember meeting? Isn’t it the other way around? The guy on the beach thinks he met her but she doesn’t remember it?

  9. Akazawa is a completely different character than her counterpart in the source novel, I hear. I have no idea if that has anything to do with the plot, but apparently she was turned into a tsundere by the studio. Hope that puts your mind at ease a bit, psgels!

  10. Dodging spoilers left and right. I think i’m going to stay away from the comment/shout box until another and mirai nikki are completed.

  11. Ah, the “Another” of beach episodes. Kudos to the producers for bucking convention and maintaining an uneasy atmosphere throughout. Even the sky seemed dreary – and therefore more realistic. The red herrings worked well – this is a series that trains you to expect anything. I wasn’t bothered by the speedboat because we saw it earlier, those things can be hella fast, can come out of nowhere, and the kid had swam way too far out.

Mochizuki’s helpless “Hey, I exist!” was pretty funny, though.

    1. yeah it was an awesome beach ep. . .the best Ive seen really haha. I still disagree with the death though, the dude going out for a beach ball, but whatever, he was just an ensign ricky red shirt anyway lol.

but yeah the whole ep as a whole was amazing. I REALY thought they were gonna forget the guy in the sand lol! I was almost yelling “get him the fk out of it already!”

  12. Great episode! Beach episodes normally suck 110% but this one actually worked.

I loved all the casual scenes like the way each one ate the watermelon.

The early scene where the truck goes slowly past them was tense! And they worked it by having everyone maintain their silence.

They seemed like they were having fun! And yes the colours were bright, but then at times grey too

and then as soon as the guy decided to go get the ball, I was like noooo don’t do it!!

His end was super grisly too.

Another is ranked number three for this season!
