You know, one major change between the current Light and the eighteen-year-old Light is that he’s much more reckless now. He’s taking a lot more risks, and his plans are no longer as careful as possible. His previous plans left nothing to the coincidence, but this episode made him reveal his identity to Near, even though he wasn’t fully sure that Near was the real culprit. I mean, what if the guy has some way to escape underground? Or comes out, wearing a mask? Still, the part of the episode that made the biggest impression on me was the one shown at the beginning, where we see random scenes of the people who’ve gotten used to Kira, and are actually threatening each other with death. Especially the phrase “Lord Kira, please kill them”, followed by the scene of a woman crying made a lot of impact. This episode was definitely meant to illustrate this. Also, only now do we see how large the impact of Shidoh’s visit was. Even though he himself wasn’t really doing much, the fact that some of the rules on the death note were fake has now been spread to all of the major characters in this anime. Still, I do wonder how Near found out about these fake rules in the first place. All of L’s data was supposed to be erased when Watari died, so he had to start all over. If Near had access to L’s data, he would have been easily able to figure out about Light. One of the things I also liked was how this caused the people inside the investigation-team to start thinking about Light’s credibility. Finally they’re getting some brains of their own again. Especially Aizawa is going to have a major role in the future episodes. I also am surprised to say that for the first time, Near actually became the most annoying character of the episode. Mello has definitely changed after the previous episode, with a huge scar on his face as a nice present. If I’m not mistaken, his voice also turned a lot lower since we last heard him.]]>
I believe Light’s idea is that in such an instance the crowd will capture Near and the other members and show their faces to the camera. I never really noticed how much more reckless Light is now, until you just pointed it out, I guess he just became complacent.
In the manga Mello came and told Near about the fake rules. Did they skip that in the anime?
In that episode Mello told Near about the fake rule.
Light doesn’t really have that element of surprise anymore. I mean he’s running out of ideas to persuade people he’s not Kira. The best thing his dad did was show that he wasn’t Kira to the investigation team. But anyways Near has been more reckless than L also I believe.
Yeah… agreed… the begining scene with the graffiti… paranoia…. “Lord Kira, please kill them” = really, really powerful… Yeah, man… wtf is up with near?! Mello’s awesome… just plain awesome… especially in the last episode… his seiyuu was really really well cast. Meh… the entire investigation team are idiots… that they’re finally catching on six years later isn’t really something to be proud of.
Yeah, Light’s DEFINITELY become more reckless… you see, with L dead… he figured that was it… it was over. He’s become lazy… he himself admits that it’s been “boring” since L died… he’s actually half excited that the sucessors appear. And he consistently underestimates Near and Mello… he actually repeats to himself over and over that “Near’s not L… he’s just a sucessor, Near’s far inferior to L,” etc, etc. Light greatly respected L… he was his only equal. Maybe its partly guilt or regret… but he talks about him ALOT later on, always comparing him to Near… it’s kind of bizare/obsessive…
Hmm… my friend said that theres a scene with Mello crying in it… and I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t find a thing… But is it possible that the “woman” crying in the begining is actually Mello? The leather furniture might be a hint… because I wondered why they would focus on a random person like that… I can’t see him wearing anything like that…OO… but still… maybe I’m way off (I kind of skimmed through this ep). But it’s a thought…
Yeah, Death Note may be a good anime, it does have quite a few flaws and annoying points or characters. The scene with Mello crying probably will happen in some future episodes, as so far he didn’t really have a reason to. I don’t remember his outfit in that scene in the OP, but I can imagine it being rather weird, since his taste in clothes is nothing short of eccentric (see his outfit of the past few episodes).
I figured the crying woman in the opening sequence was Light’s mother. I thought it looked like her and it would make sense since her husband is dead, her daughter is catatonic and her son is off in America.
I thought it was a decent episode overall. It was definitely powerful.
