Dressing up like towers… I get that kind of symbolism. The silly fifth episode had a great point to make. But why, dear god WHY, did you stuff Fujiwari no Teika in a tutu and make him perform bad ballet? Just… what was the meaning of that?
After that the episode started, and I actually found it among the better episodes of Uta Koi. It still is about Sei Shonagon (probably the last at this point). Whereas two weeks ago we saw stories from her past, and last week we saw her own romance, this episode shows some stories from after that, and how she dealt with the death of the important people around her. I like how this was all told from the perspective of yet another poet.
Especially the second half of the episode had some very good chemistry between Sei Shonagon and this poet, which can be attributed to both very good dialogue, and a very good delivery from the voice-actors, combined with some of the best tracks of the series. It’s here where the storytelling brings all of those together. If only the show had a bigger budget then it would be even better.
Rating: 5.5/8 (Excellent)
I assumed it was a reference to the fact that at that time only men were allowed on stage, forcing them to crossdress. The overall theme of the series is the old poems and stories in a modern context, and it seems to fit that they’d dress as ballerina of all things lol
I like the art as it is. There’s a certain elegance about it, like a picture book come to life.
I agree, I think they had the perfect budget for this, letting the story telling and voice acting does the heavy lifting, rather than try to over do the animation
You might want to categorize this post correctly. I had the Uta Koi category open for days waiting for this post and it never appeared. Then I look at all the recent posts and there it is. Just a heads up.
I don’t know what it is, but this show really makes me smile. I guess part of it is that it is far more entertaining than I originally thought it was going to be.
My hypothesis is that they had a deliberately goofy opening to lighten a generally heartwrenching episode. I love that you can hear the seiyuu get *this* close to getting the giggles while recording.
