Mirai Nikki – 22

This episode was undoubtedly crazy.

The plot is finally coming together after all the seemingly unrelated arcs in the first half. Finally it becomes clear what Akise’s role is in this series and he finally got his episode to redeem himself. Also, there was Yukiteru who is well on his way to become one of the least inept main characters out there. Thankfully though, the creators are actually playing with this for once, rather than just copying the standard male lead over and over again. Oh don’t get me wrong: Yukiteru has elements of this guy written all over him, but being such a wimp to actually kill his friends like that in favor of his deranged girlfriend. I like that.

Overall, I do have to say that Mirai Nikki was by far the worst series for the past year to avoid spoilers on. Both from the different OPs and EDs, but also from the fans who kept giving away hints that the audience wasn’t supposed to know yet. Looking back, I think that that was for me unconsciously something that held my enjoyment of this series a lot, especially considering how focused this series is on its surprises and plot twists.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. This was easily the best episode yet and I am really looking forward to the ending, even though I was pretty bored with the first half of the show. Luckily I wasn’t spoiled at all and was extremely surprised with this episode.

The one thing I am wondering is it seems like this will be over so soon, yet there is 4 episodes left technically…How will this continue for 4 more episodes?!

  2. Yeah, can’t say I was expecting our protagonist to straight-up kill his friends. This show is so insane, I love it.
I never read much into the OPs and EDs, so I never felt those spoiled too much. And I’ve been fortunate to not catch any huge spoilers in comments. I really can’t guess what the last four eps of this series will be about, so I hope it delivers! Hoping for any ending other than Yuki magically making everything better again–which this episode implies is impossible, so at least that’s a good sign.

    1. I suspect Yukiteru doesn’t need to resurrect everyone in order to have a happy ending. There are other ways to do a “reset” ending, and it looks like the anime already hinted at this.

  3. After lots of waffling in earlier episodes, ever since he teamed up with Yuno for good and started killing people, he’s been after one thing and one thing only: the power to bring back his parents. That obsession trumps all other considerations.

He doesn’t want to live in a world without his parents, so whatever he has to do to get the power to bring them back, he’s going to do it. Being told that he won’t be able to bring anyone back (the way they were , anyway…a creepy thought) is a shock that bounces right off his mad determination.

He can’t, WON’T believe that, because it would mean all the terrible things he did were for nothing. Unable to turn back from his desperate goal, his only way forward is to kill everyone in his path. It’s an unenviable position, to say the least.

  4. Not to point out the GIGANTIC pink elephant in the room but did Akise just kiss Yukki? I swear that was the biggest plot twist for me. I personally thought that Akise considered Yukki his best friend but damn stealing a kiss at the heat of moment caused me to do a double take.

  5. Crypt-

Ha! That kiss completely fit the tone of insanity in this ep. I actually enjoyed that kiss and the blush after. These kids are what, 14? A pretty daring move to have that in there but it was cute.

As long as we don’t get a to be continued, or an its all a fantasy as an ending this series is already in the 8-9/10 range in my book. 4 more eps at this pace will be amazing.
