Aquarion Evol – 07

Okay, with Shoji Kawamori it was inevitable, especially in a serise with so much sexual subtext, but it’s still annoying to see “the pointless love triangle”, as I’d like to call it. This is where there’s an overly obvious main couple, and yet the creators still try to bring in a love rival for the male lead for some artificial tensions. That guy with Mikono is excused because he’s important to the plot. But Zessica… just give her her own love interest. There’s no reason for her to be just part of Amato’s harem.

More criticism arise when you start to compare this series to series as Rinne no Lagrange. I’m especially pointing to how this show uses its setting: in rinne no lagrange, everyone is fully aware of where they’re fighting, and Madoka tries to keep the damages to her surroundings as small as possible for that. In this show, the characters just randomly destroy buildings and roads, which completely disappear again afterwards. Really, who found it a good idea to have these robots duke out in the middle of a city? I mean, I can understand it if the city was the target of these robots (why, though?)
, but with all the fancy technology, they didn’t even have a proper radar to intercept these giant robots or something, allowing them to fight in a place that isn’t as costly to rebuild?

Criticism 3: why the sexual context also involving the little girl?
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. Yeah I have to agree on the fights. So let’s just assume that the future is so very rich that they couldn’t care less about the damages shall we ^^;

But I disagree with you on the love triangle bit though. Zessica never seemed to be romantically interested in Amata and seducing Amata more out of mischief and rebelliousness since she always gets partnered up with him.

And also I think while it’s “obvious” that Mikono and Amata will end up together, I also think a twist will be involved. They can end up together, or they can end up “together”. It’s a spoiler to the previous series though.

    1. Oh and I thought they’ll be using the frog doll to avoid showing a loli having an orgasm but yeah they showed it anyways ^^; And to think the new girl’s seiyuu is only 16 too.

    2. I have to agree with you about Zessica. I wouldn’t call her a love rival at all seeing as its pretty clear she has no attraction for Amata. In this episode she was just scared and didn’t want to be alone, where in the previous episodes she just seemed to be wanting to have fun.

      1. I don’t know, man. The scriptwriter is a troll and so is Kawamori.

Interestingly enough, the music box version of the first aquarion ending played in the scene Amata and Zessica were together. But it never played for Mikono and Amata.

Amata has yet to fall in love with Mikono, he’s on the ‘edge’. While Mikono only thinks about Kagura.

  2. You’re seriously complaining about the lack of realism in Aquarion? :DDD And at this point, even? Episode 1 had Amata accidentally obliterating what seemed like an entire suburb with no repercussions whatsoever. Come on. This is a super robot show.

Re: the love triangles, I agree with the above commenters, I didn’t see Zessica displaying any romantic interest in Amata in this episode. Going by anime conventions I suppose it raises a flag, and maybe she will develop feelings for him, but so far she seems to be just having some fun at the awkward couple’s expense.

    1. Yeah. Either way though I agree with the review’s point, Zessica is too likeable to be “just” a third wheel character without her own love interest if they’re going with the “obvious” pair.

Hmmm, I need to rewatch the ED sequence since I did see the first series so I can se what ssj4jw is referring to, since I only fully watched it in the first couple of eps so it’s been a few weeks.

  3. Amata floating powers don’t just come from being aroused they come from strong emotion. You saw he was scared from the “ghost” and start floating. He started floating from being surprised and embarrassed at thinking the ghost story was real and being the last to realized the truth.

As for the love triangle, the ending credits maybe a hint why she is involved. You have to see the first series to see why.

    1. Except for the ED and the ‘12000 years’, the series seems to be perfectly happy ignoring the first season. I even expected Mikage to be Toma, but o_O seems not. We haven’t even seen any mention of angels, just aliens.

Maybe a bigger hint would be Omna Magni playing at Zessica and Amata’s scene, that makes me think that maybe they are the intended couple of the series. Although even that is a bit of a stretch.

      1. Well, Mykage is very obviously an Angel, and while the other bad guys seem to be humans they do have a wing/feather theme going on.

I think Omna Magni playing in the background is more than a bit of a stretch… ^^;; It’s just a cool bgm for a midnight stroll in a haunted building.

  4. Maybe it’s because we expected it, maybe it’s becase other works by the director desensitized us to it, but we don’t mind the emerging Mikono/Amata/Zessica triangle, at least not yet. Amata has a choice here between a deeper and more poignant love of cute ‘lil Mikono and the more primal lust of the smokin’-hot Zessica. We don’t know much about Ms. Wong yet, but it’s not unusual for a girl to grow to like someone she’s risking her life with on a regular basis, who isn’t that bad-looking himself.

Zessica is a check on Amata/Mikono, just as Kagura is a check on Mikono/Amata. Neither strike me as mere devices for artificial tension. At least most of the girls’ affections are spread across multiple guys (Amata, Shrade Cayenne, etc.) and vice versa. Now, if this really young-looking, annoyingly-voiced Yunoha girl becomes infatuated with Amata, well, then I’ll have a problem.

  5. I have to agree with everyone here, While Zessica might first seem like a part of a a love triangle she really doesn’t seem to have genuine feeling for Amata .. she just enjoys being mischievous and playing around with his feelings and naivety.

The interesting aspect to the series so far is that there can possibly be many interesting “relation” triangles between Aquarion pilots seeing it needs three of them and isn’t limited to fixed characters piloting it -with the exception of Amata of course- .. and i find relation triangles more interesting than just love ones, but hate, friendship, jealousy and well .. etc etc) for the pilots of Aquarion .. and seeing that the pilots abilities affect Aquarion abilities and form (as when Cherade joined, or the new invisible girl) .. and not just their abilities .. but their emotions and mental state as well (as seen when Zessica started blaming herself for getting Amata in trouble and her signs started dropping).

So far that’s the most interesting aspect in the series for me .. that and the comedy (Zessica’s and Amata’s reaction to the doll showing up to them at night was hilarious XD).

As for destruction … they explicitly mentioned they evacuated taht sector of the city when the battle started .. also .. it is clear the aliens do have superior technology than the earthlings with Aquarion being the only thing that gives earthlings a fighting chance (specially that the enemy in this episode is an expert in long range detection, reconnaissance and sniping so i expect him to have counter-measures against detection) .. as to why he chose the city .. i think the plan he made and trained for in the simulation involved suing the buildings combined with his reflectors to attack Aquarion from unexpected angles .. turning what the enemy (Aquarion pilots) might think of as an advantage and useful cover into a weak point then finish them off .. or at least that is what he planned except that the little invisible shy girl ruined his plan .. or rather that flamboyant leader in the academy who seems to know a lot more than he is letting out XD

And i have to say i really enjoyed how they introduced the invisible girl character after leaving us wondering “what the heck is that weird doll doing in the academy !!?” and also the fact the academy leaders knew about her presence all along but didn’t tell anyone .. and how all that was utilized in this episode to counter the 360 degrees laser attacks using invisibility .. the build up to that moment was really done nicely and intelligently.

But i couldn’t help feeling disturbed seeing a very young girl in semi-nude and moaning .. it just felt wrong .. i’ll let it slip hoping they don’t repeat that scene again even if she boards Aquarion another time XD
