Mirai Nikki – 17

Overall, Seventh were by far the most interesting opponents that Yukiteru and Yuno faced so far. It’s probably because of this that this arc has been my favorite so far. This episode also delved a bit in their past and gave them a pretty nice closure. The creators made good use of how they as a couple are similar, yet completely different from Yukiteru and Yuno.

Oh yeah, and then there was that thing with Yukiteru’s parents. Now that was just done for the shock factor, I believe. Of course I went ‘wtf’ when he stabbed her, but that’s the kind of twist that Guilty Crown would pull if it had the chance, and it doesn’t really fit Mirai Nikki’s thriller atmosphere of putting crazy people in a death match. I’d understand it if he was under the influence of drugs or something, but to be completely sober and pull something so random…

As for the leaps in logic, this episode was fairly light on them. There was just one point where the Seventh guy yet again got hold of Yuno’s diary. And he yet again didn’t think about destroying it. Sure it was a fake and he could have used it to get more information and all, but by now he should have known that Yukiteru is completely useless, and Yuno the biggest threat, and that getting rid of her would make things so much easier.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Its not so hard to understand if you look at how he reacted. His monologue was “here comes that troublesome woman” so basically his ex wife had constantly made him do things he did not want to do, such as facing his debtors or similar. When he gets faced with having to tell the police his shameful deeds, his thinking goes towards the troublesome woman forcing him to do things that he does not want and would get him into trouble.

The anger boiling over is actually reasonable, even if the basis for the anger is totally unreasonable (i.e. being forced to do the right thing). We have to remember that his dad has shown himself to be a total coward from the parachute grab as well

  2. Actually there is another huge flaw in logic. Yukiteru throws the dart at 7th’s phone which would kill her, then gets mad that Yuno…kills her. That made no sense to me.

Overall this was probably the best episode so far. Yukiteru still was stupid. Like his dad just pretty much left him for dead but he still wants to work things out with him.

    1. Marco said that He was a hypocrite.

Ai even said to Marco that He should have smashed the Phones instead of screwing with them.

    2. I don’t think that’s a flaw in logic … it just highlights a huge flaw in Yukiteru’s character. Seven points it out as well. He’s happy enough to have crazy Yuno do all the dirty work for him (as long as it’s not in front of him) but goes all emo and self righteous at the thought of doing anything himself.

      1. Yeah I guess it is more of a flaw in Yukiteru’s character. But what would have happened if he actually killed 7th with the dart?

  3. Well, there is a difference between getting killed by a destroyed phone, which is instantly, and bleeding painfully to death like a rat, just saying…

  4. “Oh yeah, and then there was that thing with Yukiteru’s parents. Now that was just done for the shock factor, I believe.”

Hope this isn’t a spoiler, but actually, the death of his mom triggers Yukiteru’s character decelopment. From now on Yukiteru’s personality will really change.

  5. The thing is, why is that dad went as far as stabbing his ex-wife?
He’s afraid that she will call the police/ drag him to them, wasn’t he?
Then, it’s enough to hit her unconscious and then run away. Stabbing her is a stupid choice, making you a murderer now. Rather than someone who are in debt.

  6. If you watch the news, cases of a husband killing his own wife out of small arguing aren’t rare.

Some people act first, think later even if they don’t realize it themselves. We’ve seen how his father is up until now. His wife is going to drag him into the police no matter what, right then and right there, he panicked, and coincidentally had a knife on his hand that he used to hurt his wife, whether he thinks about actually killing her or not.

    1. Also, note that he didn’t even try to save his own son from that tower. He didn’t give a shit about Yukiteru’s life, why would he do about his ex-wife?

  7. I’m crossing my fingers that Yukiteru and Yuno murder Yuki’s dad together and that will solidify their love for each-other…. I can only hope.

  8. I think that the dad killing the mum is plausible. In that situation he was asked to face all his misdeeda
s in front of the police which he would have been too much of a coward for, and he just so happened to have a knife in his hands. If he hadn’t, I think he would have pushed her away, so it was not like he intended to kill her, but it was an impulse at that instant.

Marco is spot on about what a hypocrite Yukiteru is. In some ways, he’s worse than Yuno. Yuno is insane. His excuse is that he’s a coward (at least we know where that comes from now)

  9. I’ll bet Yukiteru’s kicking himself for not letting Yuno odd his old man, amarite? Seriously though, Seventh has been the best enemy thus far. I just can’t see the freakishly big-headed woman being more interesting.

As for his dad killing his mom, hopefully this will put to rest his unreasonable dream of reuniting the two. If he focuses on killing the other diary holders and becomes a god, maybe then he’ll be able to make his dreams a reality. But right now he can’t change his dad’s nature any more than he can change Yuno’s…or his own.

  10. What IS it with anime that present incredibly lame, self-centered cowards as “protagonists”? Haven’t Ninth (at times) and Seventh both acted more honorably than First and Second? (Never mind that Second is certifiably insane; what in the world could she see in “reliable” Yuuki who has her do the dirty work, as Seventh noticed?)

    [gag]

If we HAVE to have killers as the winner of Kami-sama’s seat, surely the world would be far better off if Seventh had won, given how they obviously loved and looked out for each other? Judging from the back story, they just wanted to be together; other people were the ones attacking them. Then they got drafted into the game and worked as a team to win by the so-called “rules” of the game (and even took time out of the fight to seal their marriage).

Instead, we have Whiny Coward and Mad Stalker in the lead, heading to victory.
