We’re back at it, with Bell and Co. vs creepy green moss monster. This was a very straightforward episode, but it showcased some of DanMachi’s major strengths. Let’s go!
First of all, I liked the monster’s decoy and trap. Very solidly done – even if the trail of blood was maybe a little obvious. The real surprise here was Bell getting separated – I have to admit, while I expected someone to fall over the waterfall, I really didn’t expect him. I guess that’s a bit silly, since we’ve seen the mermaid harem addition in the OP, but it still took me by surprise.
My appreciation of Aisha continues, as she takes charge and provides the level-headedness in the crisis. Who saw that coming? Lily’s evolution as the strategist is also fun to watch – although I’m not sure of her “cheese” special boss defeating strategy. Working through the problem also made a great deal of sense – as someone whose played MMOs, it definitely felt like the first time encountering a new boss…just with some life or death implications, rather than just trying to clear it.
Finally, I appreciate Bell’s channeling of Ais to the enjoyment of the mermaid. Is she affiliated with the other Xenos? Will she join the party? Only the next episode will tell!
Two other points of compliment from this episode: animation and sound. The animation of fights is staying strong, with the CGI being limited to the magic stones (which has been consistent throughout the series). The sound effects, especially with the waterfalls plus the hits from fighting sounds particularly good this season.
I can’t say that I perfectly see where this story is going, but I’m guessing an “evil” Xenos is the next step in Bell’s evolution to dungeon conqueror: choosing friends over monsters or something of the like. I wonder if the fact that he’s half deity (or like a quarter?) will factor in at all. Still, a strong start to this cour- these episodes just fly by, which is one of the highest compliments I can pay a seasonal. Until next week!
