Hana-Saku Iroha – 14

Oh, I nearly forgot that this show had a fourth main character (as in, character who shows up on all of the promotional material alongside the three female leads). She’s really been a gimmick character so far, so it was a bit weird to see an episode fully dedicated to her. An episode that spent the rest of its time on plain fanservice and beach episode antics. Oh, and the male classmates of the cast were really annoying as well.

So yeah, this episode was a big step back from the previous arc. I would have hoped that with this, the character development would really get interesting, but that doesn’t really work with a character who hardly ever had any significant impact in the first half. Having said that though, this was the best episode for her so far where we got to know quite a bit more about her.

At this point though, I’m not sure whether she may have the distinction of being a main character. She still needs to convince me that she didn’t just get lumped together with the rest of the main characters just because she’s a cute girl. That spot would have been much more appropriate for Tohru or Ohana’s grandmother. This series is about the staff of the Kissuiso. What is she doing among them?
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. Yuina is a big attraction since a lot of fanboys swoon over her – I was hoping for something that would justify her being there but I guess that wish only got fulfilled halfway.

  2. To me Yuina is a great contrast to Ohana.
Ohana was raised in Tokyo and has discovered a job that she loves.
Yuina as been raised in an Inn and wants no part in taking over.

Could lead to some very nice interactions in the future between both of them.

I expect her to be much more present in the 2nd halfnshe isn’t all over the OP and ED for nothing.

  3. for a beach eps, I did like how they got the ‘mandatory’ fanservice shots out at the very beginning. And no wardrobe malfunctions! Pretty rare these days…

  4. Well, this is setting itself up for another quarter-of-the-series lull. What a shame. I was just getting into the melodrama, and now we have to put up with character development for side characters I couldn’t care less about.

  5. I must admit, it was a strange episode (or beginning of a story arc). The concept of the story meant that it can fit in just about anywhere within the length of the series, so why smack in the middle. It didn’t really do anything for the series imo.

  6. I didn’t think it was that bad. I would have rated this at least good.

That said, Yuina was horribly mean at the end of the episode. The guy is getting publicly humiliated, and you add to his public humiliation while turning him down. Twisting the knife a bit don’t you think?

  7. I also didn’t think it was that bad. The episode wasn’t entirely about Yuina either. Ohana obviously is still mixed up about her feelings towards Kou-chan and after I saw the opening, he definately isn’t out of the picture. Very glad for that. I like his character very much. Hopefully we will see more of him at some point.

Yuina’s feelings might be boiling even though she doesn’t show it. She obviously knows what she doesn’t want or doesn’t know what she wants..? Hmm, her character might get quite good actually if done right. But well, we will see.

  8. I was happy about this episode, actually. The drama with Ohana and her horrible mother was kinda boring me, yep. And along with Ko, that situation will be later fested up…

I wonder if Yuina loves the guy though.

  9. I think that Yuina is important to the story in that she is a bit like a younger version of Ohana’s mother. I’ll be interested to see how this plays out. Oh .. and I was glad to see that Kou-chan was still in the OP 🙂 Donno why but you just want to cheer for the poor guy.

  10. I won’t say Yuina’s mean, as that was a honest answer well thought out and to her characterization, its just that the timing was terrible…should be quite a revelation for her fiance next ep…

  11. Like all things anime, it all depends on whether you like the character. I like Yuina’s character so I really liked this episode.

PS: I see another Grey Heron flag has been tripped.

  12. Again a great episode. I’d go as far as saying this has the strongest characters of all currently airing shows. Yuina is cleverly done too. Seemingly carefree, yet very deliberate. The viewer doesn’t know what she’s really thinking, which is again a type of character not seen very often in this genre (as far as i can think of).

  13. The guy is getting publicly humiliated, and you add to his public humiliation while turning him down. Twisting the knife a bit don’t you think?

Hm I kind of sided with the girls on this one. They did seem irresponsible but this guy definitely lacks leadership skills. You might compare him to how Tooru treats Minchi but this guy is just a little too dismissive of the people under him and set a poor example dumping his responsibilities to be with Yuina. And refusing to talk to one of them when she asked to speak to him, instead pushing her onto a manual for guidance? Well, if he’s Yuina’s age (16?) I suppose he might be still too inexperienced to be a manager.

I also felt Yuina didn’t like him at all but put on a cheery face for him to distract him from how roughly he treated his staff or his guests. (Ohana and Minchi peeping in on him.) From the way the Kissui Inn’s staff treat their guests, I’m very surprised this manager would yell at his guests that way, tresspassing or not. And then switching tune so quickly when Yuina shows up?

As for Yuina herself, I think I could compare her position with Ohana’s mom, although I think there’s more to be learnt about those things she wants to do with her life and her as yet unknown relationship with her mom? Ohana’s mom on the other hand, wanted to get away from Kissui but didn’t have any idea what to do outside and still wound up working in the Inn/Hospitality line writing about Inns.

  14. I normally hate the beach episode, but I agree that they did it in a way that it wasn’t the main focus of the episode. I did find this episode out of place, and it didn’t feel like I was watching the same show. For me, it was kind of boring and I didn’t really care about the “plot” about taking over the Inn.

On the plus side… new OP! I don’t have to immediately skip it anymore yay.
