Deadman Wonderland – 04

This. Is one heck of a mind-screw. I mean, holy crap: this episode went even farther than this show already has in order to make the main characters’ life hell. Heck, this episode devolved into complete psychological torture! Even Shiro here proved that she isn’t god-moded as well, being captured like that.

This prison is completely crazy. Even the Number Pads on the security locks are scrambled up in order to confuse people. It’s so crazy that it has a badass violent inmate who is scared of breasts and an unregistered prisoner doesn’t even catch their attention.

These don’t have to be criticisms, of course: we have yet to learn of Shiro’s story. It’s already been established that something is really strange about her, and people hardly seem to notice her. Also the boob phobia is a neat quirk as long as it doesn’t overtake Crow’s character (which, in this episode, it didn’t do that at all).

Four episodes in, and the characterization has been pretty consistent: neither good nor bad, but it works. This series mostly makes its characters interesting by showing the way they react when confronted with everything that goes on in Deadman Wonderland. The cast in particular makes sure that the story just keeps going on: there’s always something interesting happening. The downside to this is that the characters never have the time to really sit back and do nothing, which is especially visible in the lead character. So far though, it’s got enough to make up for it, and I can’t say that for every series that has stiff acting this quickly.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Hmm, I think I figured out The Big Secret of this show, and now it’s kind of boring already. If it’s really correct, I don’t know how people who read manga (I did not) are watching this, it’s just so plain. Like watching one of the Saw movies for the second time.

  2. Im not watching it, the big secret doesn’t ruin anything really, as in the manga they let you know pretty much at the beginning (they did in the anime too but psgels missed it) the big secret isn’t the main point of the show untill…like the end (where the manga is now) the main parts of the story is all the crazy shit that happens in between, unfortunately, the show doesn’t do the manga justice at all…such many important things left out. . .that’s why I’m not watching it.

  3. > untill
like the end

    So it’s really like Saw: violence and gore with a “twist” in the end…bo-o-oring.

  4. for god’s sake, the animation is awful. I miss so much epic Manglobe series like Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy, Michiko e Hatchin and Sarai-ya Goyou. Deadman Wonderland is like The Sacred Blacksmith 2.0 🙁

    Sigh, ok mr.genius .. why don’t you just go watch another show and let us “mindless drones” enjoy this show for what it is .. and if you mean you figured the identity of the red-man .. then i’m sure many did and it isn’t the only important secret there.

    @psgels
    As for the weirdness of the show .. let’s not forget we know nothing about the back-story of the main character or shiro (who clearly know each other from the ED montage but the main character just doesn’t remember for some reason) … also .. it seems some disaster/phenomena happened and the government was covering up for it with the help of some corporation (the one that owns the prison) .. there is a lot of stuff that is yet to be revealed regarding why this prison really exists or why the government would allow such place to exist in the first place.

  6. @psorcerer
    Twist? Identity of the red man was never meant to be secret at all, not for the readers, it was one of those we know but characters don’t kind of thing.

  7. especially since this *big secret* was revealed in the first page of the manga…seriously it was lol

    but psorcerer, I do see where you are coming from, the creator DOES put the main character through a LOT of hell before things start to get better, but yeah if you coming from a standpoint of it just being guts and violence like saw…well you have a point. . .I never liked saw and never watched more than like the first 20 minutes of it.
