With this episode, I’m sure of it: Gosick should just have been 13 episodes long. It’s very ironic that out of all the series this season, the only one that goes beyond 13 episodes is the one who doesn’t need that many episodes, leaving series as Yumekui Merry as way too short. Seriously though, if the creators cut off all of the bad arcs and just compiled all of the good stuff into one season, it would have been a very good series.
The current arc really has no business in this series. It completely failed its purpose to give Hair Guy some depth. All we now know is that he feels pressured, but that could easily have been done within a minute inside a different arc. It really made no difference for the story of this arc whether his past was revealed or not.
The story again suffered from the stupid virus once more. I mean, when your house gets searched by the police, and you’ve just collected the most priceless artifact imaginable, not to mention that you’re selling off young children. Even if you’re completely confident that they won’t find anything, why the heck did the bad guys in this episode not try to move everything to a different location? I mean, with the huge crowd he invited, there is just one thing that needs to go wrong and everything is ruined.
Also, did Kujou just really try to drop a priceless jewel on the floor, to test whether or not it was made out of glass? I mean, it didn’t break, but what if that drop scratched it?
Also, it’s a shame to see that this is very possibly the worst animated Bones series in years. I mean, what was up with that action scene at the end? Three frames with speedlines and suddenly everyone was captured. That’s just lazy, but the rest of this episode also just looked too mundane. You can see that at least some budget went into it, but none of the drawings really felt inspired or particularly well animated.
The only merit of this arc was Victorique. Especially that nightmare at the end of the episode was excellent. I’ve said this before: this series sucks in terms of the small picture, but it has some pretty good stuff in the big picture. Just cut away these random mysteries. This show just isn’t good at them.
Rating: – (Disappointing)
Glad I didn’t pick this up. The characters look interesting but I’ve heard the plots are really boring.
News flash: Gavrile is a MORON!!!!! He’s already solved THREE cases with Kujo and he STILL won’t believe him. Get the man a dunce hat, he’s earned it.
Wait… this actually aired?
I’d heard the broadcast got pushed back a week.
That was the shittest episode EVER!
First they get kidnapped as seen last episode, then they somehow both magically escaped, no showing how in the episode.
Then, kujo didn’t immediately go to police station, oh no, that can wait…
Then, we see the shittest cops EVER, one woman just beat like 3 of them without breaking a sweat by magically transporting between the three of them. Rest of the cops decided, hey, wrestling time! I mean seriously, not a single one carries a baton?! Seriously, not a single one thought of, instead wrestling one on one, why don’t two cops on one guy, or, hell, just dogpile? Kujo decided, hey, I am going to be a lone hero, and run right to the enemy place by the place all by myself. Oh, did I mention that they are a whole army of cops outside? Oh, did I mention that the police chief can shout loud enough that he can be heard, while standing outside far away, to be heard all the way inside the building?
The number of things wrong with this episode, it reminds me of the Shangri-la prison escape episode, only much, much worse.
Eh, if you watch any series with such a predisposition, it doesn’t make for such a great review.
Now, Yumekui Merry is made by JC Staff not bones, so you really shouldn’t be mad at Gosick for anything. I’ve read most of the volumes of the Gosick light novel and it does outshine the anime, like light novels usually do. Keep in mind that it is a light novel series, so it’s development is quite slow because novels tend to be a lot more detailed. Yumekui Merry is based off a manga (which I have also read) so it is much more fast and action-focused (1000 words per page vs. 5 panels).
Does Gosick deserve a 24 episode season? I would hope so. You see, it’s much better to have slow development than something that’s rushed. And in fact, they have already cut out a lot. I mean, this latest arc was only two episodes. And I admit, they do cut out some scenes and details which demands a little more suspension of disbelief.
Speaking of which, that’s something you lack. Every piece of fiction demands from its audience a little suspension of disbelief. You can find faults in even the greatest pieces of literature if you view it with the lens you have now.
Stupid virus? By the way, dropping the gemstone is an ingenious method of checking it’s authenticity. In science class, which you will be taking someday in the future, you’ll learn that a diamond is the hardest material in the world. The only way you can scratch it is with another diamond or diamond bit drill.
The actions scenes were done much better in the novels, again this is an instance of cutting out details. Even so, you can’t really critique a series for it’s action scenes if the series isn’t an action genre. That’s not what you should be looking for. They are there to advance the plot.
Criticism of the animation is more of an opinionated topic, but if you do have critiques then they are directed at Bones, not the series.
If you do want to critically review this episode/ series, then you could call out it’s faults for hiding clues and other crucial information from the audience. That’s my biggest problem with this series (not the novels).
I mostly agree with you Strawberry, but in Psgel’s defence I must say this show actually forgot too many details both in the storytelling and In acting.
The commenter before you pointed out many mistakes an animation like this shouldn’t have.
I am watching the same pattern here that made Allison to Lilia a total mess.
And, yes the fault’s in those scriptwriters who cut worthy novels like that and adapted all of those as cabaret. It’s not certainly Psgels’ fault for pointing out the obvious.
Sadly I have to agree with psgels. This show was a disappointment since I had huge expectations from it.
The mysteries just aren’t interesting, the culprits are dull and Vic’s sleuthing is more of a wild guess that always turns out correct for plot’s convenience.
The only redeeming quality of this show is Victorique’s cuteness and her relationship with Kujo. Which is enough to give this show an average mark, but I expected more.
I mostly agree with this review, however, I’m glad that somebody else brought up the point of the diamond. That isn’t stupid at all. If it were a real diamond (which it was), then the fall wouldn’t have damaged it. If anything got scratched, it would have been the floor (diamond is the hardest naturally occurring mineral we know about, only other diamonds or lasers can damage them).
I no longer watch this show so I am unprepared to verify any claims as to the type of gemstone in question, but a more practical consideration for a falling diamond is the possibility of fracture.
Diamonds are hard but brittle, so if you hit them
hard enough you could even shatter them. I don’t know if a free fall like that in the anime can really damage them, but it’s sure even diamonds have their own weak points… or better said, planes. The cleavage planes. If you hit the diamond at the right angle along a cleavage plane it will split. But if your hit isn’t accurate you’ll shatter it for sure. Edges are also quite weak too. http://www.jewelry-secrets.com/Diamonds/Can-You-Chip-A-Diamond/Can-Diamonds-Chip.html
Such a large and intricate cut diamond might well crack from a fall. Large diamonds are seldom perfect (and frankly, that thing was gianormous). STILL I must say that Gosick is one of the VERY few worthwhile series of the season. If nothing else I could watch it for it’s charm.
