Supernatural The Animation – 03

Great to see that the third episode already tells about the background of the two lead characters. I mean, a dead mother is nothing new here, but usually when anime do that, they wait until very long before they come with the story that explained what happened to them. Doing this in the third episode really allows the series to go beyond that and use it in later episodes to its advantage.

And again: this episode mostly progressed like a normal ghost story, only for the climax to really get interesting. It’s a sign of great build-up, and if the creators are able to do this consistently shows that they know what they’re doing. Even when most of the episode is a standard ghost story, when you watch the episode back you can see the hints here and there that are all building up towards that climax.

This episode also showed the mysterious father of Dean and Sam for the first time. As a background, it’s definitely interesting. At this point it’s clear that something happened to that guy while his wife died. This episode seemed to suggest that she died by a mere poltergeist, but there’s probably more to it than just that. Oh, and I also liked that fortune teller.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Since it’s quite obvious you haven’t watched the Live Action version of Supernatural, it’s really interesting to see you blogging this series. I can just say that remember to keep a small eye out for anything that could hint at Sam and Dean’s parents, be it either the mom or the dad, and the events surrounding both of them, as it might hold a bit of importance on the brothers AND the story as a whole. ♥

  2. There’s a lot of hints on a lot of things that happen to brothers, even in previous episodes.

Their father and mother remain important for a long time, and in a sense a lot of the stuff surrounding them are pivotal to the show as well as to anime

Actually when one re-watches the two previous episodes after watching the third, a lot of stuff starts to fall in place.

At first I loathed the fact that the anime seemingly skips the first episode of tv show, but now I think its quite nice. It builds up on the mysteries the show already has and once the whole pilot episode is re-told(possibly in flashbacks in some upcoming episode), a lot of stuff will become more clear, yet, a whole lot more questions will arise.

I might not like on where the show was brought by its fourth, fifth and sixth seasons, but the first three seasons are some of the best tv possible, so its nice to see that at least two out of those three will be adapted into the first 22 anime episodes.

Hopefully after these 22 are out they will, more thoroughly, adapt the third season.

  3. Also as the psychic in episode said:

The poltergeist that was haunting the current owners of the house, was not the thing that killed their mother. It was just something that was attracted by that event.

In the episode this anime episode is based upon, they explain that really bad things literally “scar” the places they appear in.

Basically this show follows the usual ghost rules – the more twisted and bad event has happened, the more attractive the place is for more supernatural things.

Thats also the reason why brothers search for any sort of murder or suicide when researching a “job”. Ghosts do not appear out of “peaceful”events.

On the whole “scarring” the place stuff, in the scale from 1 to 10 on how attractive the place is to supernatural, its 11.

  4. the series look very interesting but where can you watch it because i can’t find it anywhere except for the trailers…
