Shiki – 19

Just… wow. The counterattack really was the final part that was missing from this series. After the huge amount of build-up, we finally see it used and this show is actually well on its way to surpass itself. Just about everything in this episode was just amazing. The past episodes entirely turned everything around for this series: everything changed. This is exactly what I’m hoping for when a series spends a huge amount of its time on building up.

The hunters have now immediately become the hunted. The interesting thing is that the regular Shiki don’t seem to have superpowers. The only reason why they were so successful during the majority of this series was because of that excellent stealth game that they played. The only ones who seem like they can make the difference are the werewolves, along with Seishirou and Seishin. Especially the latter intrigued me like no other in this episode: what kind of difference here can he make with Sunako next to him?

Three episodes also feels perfect for closing off this series and I really ope that the creators take this chance to give this series the closure it deserves. The DVD sales have unfortunately been pretty bad (the first volume only sold at 606 copies, putting it only slightly below the Armed Librarians and Senkou no Night Raid), so there is no way that this can get a second season, so it really needs to end well within these three final episodes.

It’s interesting how we finally see that red haired woman again that was in the first episode. I’ve been wondering for a while what happened to her, and I thought that Tatsumi got her, though instead the Shiki got her mother. Interesting twist. Meanwhile this episode built up for both Kaori and Ritsuko are building up to something really interesting as well, I’m really looking forward to this finale.

  1. I dunnno how far the manga has caught up with the novel, but the anime is almost completely caught up with the manga – there’s only material left for a couple more episodes. The story does seem to be wrapping up, so I don’t see any point in a second season, to be honest.

  2. Seishin’s conversation with Thooru from few episodes ago was an event from the novel so it seems that the anime is starting to use novel info where needed and trying to end the story with manga material they have been using till now.

  3. I would suck if the series ends up cruelly staking Sunako like it did with Chizaru. It would hardly surprise me on the other hand :S. This episode was just amazing.

  4. From what I’ve heard from the manga readers, the story has been diverging a little bit but they seem to think that it’ll be wrapped up in three episodes so no worries about a cliffhanger. And I still can’t believe how little this one sold, it seems like it has a small but decent sized fanbase outside of Japan so such low numbers are baffling.

  5. yea it is sad that something this great isnt selling much……question where did u get ur info about the number of dvds sold??

  6. I’ve read the manga up to this point, I haven’t seen this episode yet. I wonder how did they animate the melted boy – it would have been awesome. Yeah, the anime is very close to the manga and I would assume we would see an anime original ending. Here’s hoping to a wonderful closure!

  7. Was I the only one that was really (really really) disturbed by that scene with the blue-haired woman, holding her rotting child…?

And I feel very sorry for Kaori. I would’ve never thought that she’d end up this broken. Why does Megumi hates her so much, anyway? I understand that she might dislike her, but what she did was way too much.

  8. Just watched the episode. I’m very confident we’re getting an anime original ending. The story diverged from the manga for the very first time in this episode.

Another major Shiki was supposed to die right after Chizuru was staked. Plus a minor Shiki and a minor human characters. And none of this happened. So, 99% sure we’re getting an anime-only ending.

  9. Or Novel-inspired ending. People keep forgetting that Light Novels are the original material. and the anime already did animate something from the novels that wasn’t in the manga
