Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu – 02

As for the series I’m not going to blog:
– Ookami has some nice ideas. Just too bad that it doesn’t know how to use them, is pretty bad at building up and has a terrible narrator.
– Amagami may have a pretty good staff, but even they couldn’t do something about the utterly dull scenario and lead character.

As for Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu… yeah. It’s definitely a wild-card for my blogging schedule this season, and if it would have aired in any other season, I would never have considered to cover it. This summer season however… I wouldn’t call it dry, like with the previous Winter Season. There are quite a few excellent titles with Shiki, Nurarihyon no Mago, High School of the Dead and Occult Gakuin, along with promising sequels as Kuroshitsuji II and Sengoku Basara II. Apart from that though… there really isn’t anything else. The rest, while having charms here and there, is just doomed for mediocrity.

Out of that ‘rest’, the one that stands out the most is Denyuuden. As much as I fear the staff (it has the director of the first season of Sengoku Basara, Regios, Rental Magica, Mamoru-ku n ni Megami ni Shukufuku wo, Yume da Maya Kidan and the Chrono Trigger OVA, while the series composition guy only worked on Chocolate Underground, Dogs, Bullets and Carnage, Final Fantasy Unlimited and Kurogane no Linebarrels… what kind of a resume is that?!), I’m willing to offer them a chance to impress me.

Denyuuden (as I’ll call this thing for now) stands out with its tongue-in-cheek lead characters, and this episode showed that it’s also interested in building towards a serious story. I’m interested in how the two are going to mesh. This show sucks for having such a focus on teenagers in such a fantasy setting (with the strongest magician like what? sixteen years old?), but this episode spent a lot of time on what it should have been doing: building up, introducing the setting, showing a bit of back-story, things like that. The characters are quite likable due to this tongue-in-cheek execution, and they’ve got enough chemistry. That should be alright for now, though do note that I WILL DROP THIS SERIES as soon as it starts dragging or falling apart.

The worst part of this episode was that it tended to try a little too hard with the dramatic scenes. The part in which that girl whose name I can’t remember cry up to Raina could have been done more subtle, while the bullies in that flashback scene… were just too much.
Rating: (Enjoyable)

  1. really,to blog this show….
I thought that if the much-better Seiken no Blacksmith from last fall aired in this season,it would immediately being blogged by you…

  2. I thought Ookami looked pretty decent. Maybe you should give it a chance.

About Kuroshitsuji, are the characters straight already?

  3. Sigh .. i’m having a hard time finding “Densetsu” episodes anywhere .. not sure even if the people subbing it will call it “Densetsu” or “legend of legendary heroes” (which sounds a lot like legend of galactic heroes) .. hope this doesn’t end up ignored like Night Raid (which hasn’t progressed beyond ep 6) … grrrr XD

On a second note .. i too agree with “Shogun22” .. Ookami is very decent show and my viewing of the first 2 episodes was very enjoyable (knowing i’m not really into moe series) … but i thoroughly enjoyed Ookami for how it progresses things at a very good pace (every episode till now had some progress and important new events/revelations) and all the fairytale in-jokes and parodies (specially the narrator .. which i have no clue why people hate so much … it is intentional people that she acts like that .. she is a parody of the typical storytellers that narrate fairy-tales)

Speaking of progress .. I really like that by the 2nd episode the main male character already confessed his fondness of Ookami’s character … the Otogi bank group knows he was the one that helped Ookami in the first ep .. he also proves himself very useful to the group using all the knowledge/tools passed down to him from his hunter grandfather (the dogs finding Ookami was a very nice touch) … the fight scenes are really well animated and fun to watch (the kitty gloves are really adorable and could really back a punch) .. and the Cinderella part in ep1 was awesome .. specially the Pumpkin-Cycle and the Cinderella-double-kick-in-your-face .. that was hilarious XD

I really can’t fathom what’s there to hate about Ookami .. yes .. some of the side characters are stereotypes .. but the main characters are really well presented .. specially the main male character .. he is shaping up to be a very interesting character .. even though he is set back by his phobia and social awkwardness (which are reasonable since he lived his child life in isolated mountains) he was still able to help out a lot and prove himself a valuable asset to the group .. Ookami’s past too seems to be interesting and will definitely be explored in upcoming episodes.

Psgels … i was really hoping you would give Ookami a 2nd chance .. and sorry for the long Ookami rant XD

Yeah .. but it’s usually quite unreliable to look for anime by google … i usually regular Baka-updates for my torrent downloads .. but they didn’t up it until now .. so i went to the source by checking which groups are subbing it on AniDB.net and visiting their sites .. will surely watch the first 2 eps then share my opinion of it XD

  5. surprised you’re giving this a chance…just seems like your taste has changed a bit (not saying that’s a bad thing). Or maybe it’s because there’s nothing truly interesting making an appearance. There’s no bakumatsu, there’s no real dive, there’s no Oh! Edo Rocket…I’m still trying to promote that show around, I can’t believe people never looked into it. Hilarious blend of comedy, drama, and characters. Pretty sure it has one of the more interesting protagonist/antagonist (same person)

  6. I’d like to answer that rant about ookamisan, but this space belongs to another anime.
Sorry to stalk you everywhere, but indeed, i find you everywhere i read and always chanting “magna cum laude” to that utter cr… well, that anime. I swear I’ve got nothing against you, other than the opposite opinion about ookami, of course. Now i guess Mr M will make an appearence too … ¬_¬”

  7. cody: That’s indeed a bit of the problem here: there just isn’t as much intereesting stuff here, compared to other years. Especially considering that most of the spring season shows have already ended at this point.

hunter-wolf: My problem with the narrator is her delivery, which just really, really annoys me with the corny jokes she keeps making. And that’s pretty much my problem with the entire series: it has potential, but it’s just full of all kinds of annoying characters, ranging from the thugs that just keep appearing, to that red riding hood knock-off.

  8. @psgels

It’s sad you won’t be blogging it, but that’s yuor blog and you are free to blog (or not) whichever show you like (or dislike) XD

As for the thugs .. *spoilers* in the first episode the Otogi bank was given a job to frame the delinquent who raised a knife aganist Ookami .. and at the end of the episode he tries to avenge his humiliation at the beginning of the episode by ganging up on Ookami (very typical of delinquents in real life) .. i don’t see a problem with that .. in ep2 .. the whole gang thing was a trap right from the start … the thugs weren’t just appearing out of thin air .. some tipped them off (someone who clearly hates Ookami) .. but each appearance has a good reason behind it *spoiler end*

As for the Red-riding-hood “knock-off” .. i actually find it pretty amusing .. seeing “red-riding hood” .. the “wolf” and the “hunter” all working together .. it makes me curious as to how the whole thing will work out (considering what i saw from the Cinderella story it can prove to be very interesting XD)

Oh .. and i did watch the first episode of Densetsu … it captured my attention … i liked how they handled the magic (specially when the main character was chanting his first spell attack) and the unstable political situation in the kingdom of the main characters .. this seems to have the potential to be a very amusing and well made fantasy/action/comedy show .. or fall flat on its face … let’s hope they don’t screw that one XD
