Interestingly enough, all episodes of Angel Beats have their parts that just don’t work. In this episode, it’s the comedy. It’s unfortunately to be expected from the director: his style of comedy is over the top, and either works, or fails to hit the mark completely, and this was the latter. The parts where Yurippe activated the flying chairs lacked timing, and were too repetitive. Her screaming was just too over the top.
On the other hand however, I really felt sorry for Angel (or Tachibana, as her name turns out to be). The way that this episode stripped off all her authority and made her all alone. It screamed Key, but it was really well done.
If my memory doesn’t fool me, it was Yurippe who was the first one to awaken in this world, right? It was her idea to label Angel as the enemy, right? So what if Tachibana was the first one to awaken, and somehow she and Yurippe ended up fighting: I can very much imagine Yurippe as a very confused and angry spirit. Whatever it caused, it caused Yurippe to form that resistance group of hers, and Angel to seek the support of the student council. This would explain why Angel is nice to Otonashi (and probably all of the other members of the resistance apart from Yurippe). I have a lot of reasons to believe that Angel never really causes anyone to disappear: that’s just something Yurippe assumed.
Also, thinking further: while the mysterious new student council president still remains a mystery, then what if he is a regular student? What if Angel was simply trying to use her role as the student council to get the students under control, and prevent them from fighting back like they did at the end of this episode.
Just one thing: please give the new student council president a bit of depth in the next episodes. A dull villain isn’t exactly what this series needs right now.
Rating: * (Good)
Hey…you didn’t enjoy the slow motion gag+ed song right?..but I laughed so hard at that. It’s the best comedy scene from this series so far.(You know…the other gags rather lame).
I don’t know why they tried so hard to do comedy thing in every eps.It is the one of the weakest spot in this series so far.Almost everyone complain about it.(Although in the last ep they can handle it better now). When I think..It’s look like..They didn’t want us to serious at “the world after death” thing too much.
Usually when you heard the thing about death it’s mostly sad right? But with the many stupid comedy. the school and the world in this series feels more ordinary and naturally now.
But with the theme ” The world after death” it can make you feel about mystery…It make many thing very suspicious. that can make this series’s story interesting to follow too much so far.
Ah…I forgot to comment about character development of tenshi in this ep.They are doing very good job to make her more like human. In this eps you can see many feeling from her.Especially “regrets”.I really feel sorry for her now.
And Awesome cliffhanger. Wow..interesting. Look like make the angel fell down from her student president position isn’t the good thing at all. I’m very curious what’s happen next?
I actually laughed my ass off at the exam distraction strategies, I think they added enough variety to keep it from being too repetitive.
I felt really sorry for Kanade when she watched as her meal ticket got sucked away. There were already quite a few hints that she was actually very human (though abit lacking in the expression department), this episode showed alot of that during her interaction with otonashi at the exams. I think it built up really well to that scene.
i actually consider this to be the best episode so far. i find the drama and comedy both good this time.
Did anyone catch the analogy between the “Super spicy Mapo tofu” meal, “that no one dare to ask” and Tenshi’s situation?
At first, the meal is unbearable but this is deceiving. The after taste turn out to be good.
Well I think the comedy this time worked at least better than last episode, but it still only made me give it a weak chuckle because it was so obvious and overdone.
Especially the rocket chair could have been made into a nice suprise gag, but they made it…well, not bad but only mediocre.
Tachibana could actually become an interesting character IF she get’s developed beyond what we already had.
Seems like characters get tossed aside as soon as they had some spotlight so far.
The slow-motion rocket chairs plus the ED song were hilarious!
Finally, this how’s kicked into overdrive with that new badass Not-So-Vice-Anymore-Nazi-President in charge.
Though he does look fiiine in dat hat.
The rocket chairs where epic IMO 😛
Rocket chairs worked for me because they made it unexpected each time, it was repeating the same joke but not in the same way. I also really liked this ep as I had been calling for more exploration of Angels charachter since the second ep. I was expecting him to get up from the table and take angel her meal, cliche but I would have accepted it.
Why do they need to steal the meal tickets anyway? How are they obtained by the normal students and Angel?
Wouldnt it be ironic now that it was her protecting them from the student council by giving them freedom.
hey comedy is a pretty tricky thing, you either hate it or like it. i liked it and that’s that, no need to say the comedy is the weakest in the show, you’ll make yourslef a laughing stock.
Her position against is completely understandable. From the beginning I’ve wondered about the motives of Yurippe, but in the end she is doing what she basically must do in order to not reach her own conclusion.
She doesn’t want to move on, and I think it is much more of a happy place – especially away from her specific suffering. Death is nonexistent, no matter what she does, her family, her friends will survive.
Tenshi or Tachibana on the other hand seems more like this figure of whom is trying to help people move on. She pretty much handed the one guy his moment, where he could make amends for the weight that was still on his soul after his death. Only to have it snatched away by a random attack!
As I understand it the Meal Ticket thing is entirely their way of rebelling (and also a way to show some nice concert scenes). In the light novel prequel they originally just got meal tickets from the school Bursary.
“Please call me Christ” was never funny and should die immediately.
It would be great if he disappears when someone calls him Christ.
Sadly, I felt that the characters are making big out of small.
It’s not a good thing.
Think ’bout it
