This could very well be the best recap episode ever.
So basically, before the second half of this series starts, Aoba looks at Wakaba’s portrait and the episode then commences to recap pretty much the first episode. And oh my god, the nostalgia!
Because we now have gotten to know the characters, despite this being a near-exact copy of that first episode (if my memory doesn’t deceive me), it stands out as ten times better than what I remember it to be, and even then I already was impressed with that episode. It was so awesome to see Wakaba back, along with the younger versions of the cast. And of course, the point at which Wakaba eventually died hit even harder.
This episode was pretty much a filler, but I don’t care. It was awesome.

The 1st episode of Cross Game truly is a very special episode. Probably, and in my opinion, the greatest 1st episode if not the greatest episode in Anime history! 😀
Seeing it for the first time, even though I know nothing about the series yet, gave a strong impact. I believe most viewers got hooked after watching that first episode. Now seeing it again for the second time after knowing the main cast is just superb. It gave an even stronger impact. This is a work of a genius!

Looked like a collage of the first episode plus some of the flashbacks that happened later. Maybe even a few additional things here and there (unless I’m remembering wrong, but parts of the funeral looked different).
I was originally going to skip it, but then stuck with it after reading the comments here. You guys are right, even the second time through it still makes a big impact.
I was initially sad to hear it was a recap, but you’re right, the episode was still awesome. Can’t wait for the 2nd half of the series to officially start.
