Recap.
We basically saw Hohenheim and some strange woman talk while the past twenty-six episodes were recapped. I’m not complaining however, because for a recap it was a very good one: it contained the best bits of animation along with the best soundtracks for an intense 20 minutes. Hohenheim meanwhile looks at people dancing around a campfire and has some sort of evil twin or clone or something show up. It then turns out to be a dream of his.
If this really wasn’t part of the manga, then I think it’s the creators’ way of foreshadowing. My guess is that they were forced to include a recap at this point, so instead of just boringly do an episode in which nothing happens, why not throw in a taste of the future? I must say, with the dancing children I’m beginning to see more why Hohenheim was supposed to be that kind man; he indeed doesn’t seem like the same guy as his white version.
OP: New OP this time, starts off well but then degenerates into generic J-rock.
ED: Another slide-show. The music is decent for a j-pop ballad.
Rating: ** ()
That “strange woman” is Pinako, Winry’s grandmother. Either Hohenheim was REALLY drunk when he was dreaming, or Pinako has gotten a lot shorter in her old age.
Pretty much both, Koromi. Heh.
For a recap chapter it was actually good. Some scenes look great with some of the new soundtrack.
The jumps between old and new events were a little drastic, sometimes I think Brotherhood is not really user-friendly as the old anime was. They’re delivering great material, tough, FMAB is getting better and better.
I haven’t seen the episode but it seems (from screencaps and what people have said) nothing in this episode is in the manga.
The stuff coming up is actually quite exciting so I don’t understand why we needed a recap. It seems like a waste of an episode to me. So it might be good for a recap but I am skipping it.
I really doubt that recaps are there for the story. It more seems like a chance for the production to catch a bit of a breather and for planning purposes. After 26 episodes, it was indeed about time for such an episode.
From the opening, it seems like they’re going to cover up to Briggs and Sloth soon. FFFF can’t wait, can’t wait.
I actually like the OP song a lot, especially the chorus.
The woman is young Pinako, I recall seeing her in one of the photos in Ed’s house. In that photo, she is drinking wine with Hohenheim as well.
And I agree with psgels, this episode features the best soundtracks of this series so far, they really made some previous scenes more powerful. For a recap this is not a bad one indeed.
Did Pinako shrink or what? The current Pinako is like a quarter of the size of the middle-age one lol.
@TJ
When people get older they do shrink. This is a natural fact of life.
@Kim
Yeah I know. Bones become less dense and gravity has its effects over the years. But real life people don’t shrink to a quarter of their original size though. animation is about exaggerations lol.
well my grandmother shrank just like that, shes 77 now and pictures showed her at like three times her height so yeah sometiems old people do shrink. . . a lot
the recap was nice, form reading the manga it seems like they are preparing for the hoeheim backstory since if you remember at ep 26 the *father* guy that al was going to meet looked a lot like hoemheim, and to be honest the *other hoenheim* in the dream was most likely him dreaming of the *father* character…i mean its kinda obvious that they have some connection…looking the same and all
I love the narrators voice, it sounds so awesome. Does anyone think it must’ve been weird for Hoheinheim to marry Tricia if he basically grew up with her? Yes I’ve read the magna, but still, it would be strange. I wish we saw Pinako’s husband, would like to know what he was like or what happened to him.
It was quite good for a recap episode. The OP/ED however *shivers* How could they do this, after having two kickass ones before.
Ehm its weird, but … have I missed an episode or something? I cant remember the fight of Greed vs Wrath.
@Alucardu
Greed vs Wrath was in epidode 14. You can go check.
How weird, somehow I missed that episode, and what a shame that was. What a great animation and some good plot lines too…
@Omurqi
you said it brother (sister? LOL) i cringed when i realized WHY eclipse was taking so long to sub this ep, cuz i just knew that there was a high probability the fantastic last OP would be replaced by a decidedly lamer one… and i was sadly not mistaken. ditto for the ED. how long is this season gonna last btw? i mean why introduce new theme songs if the season is winding down? or are they just running through without a break?
and what kinda mother is pinako??!! since hoehenheim knew her when SHE was young then he knew his future wife from since she was a KID!! where’s chris hanson when you need him LOL?
Perhaps it was good for a recap, but that’s still a recap. I found it pretty frustrating, actually. We only get one episode per week, please give us something new.
According to the manga; Hohenheim didn’t meet Trisha till she was a young adult… but then, this was a dream wrapped around a recap episode, so I guess it doesn’t have to follow time-lines precisely.
And as for “what kind of mother is Pinako?” (Bobby) lol–she isn’t Trisha’s mother anyway, but the mother of Winry’s father.
I thought it was a great way to do a recap episode, bones excell once again with a brilliantly thought out way of turning what could have been a useless episode into something pretty good.
Also it does a good job of reintroducing hohenheim into the series by giving people a insight to his character.
Pinko being short now is just a way of emphasising shes old.
For being a recap it was actually pretty good. Not sure why they put it here though, it would fit much better in a couple episodes later
