Phantom – 09

With this episode, Phantom yet again proves that it’s one of the top shows this season. It’s much quieter than the previous episode, and yet there was so much growth in Ein an Zwei’s character(or should I say, Reiji and Helen’s). Especially the conversations between Reiji and Helen were utterly astonishing. The creators have got such a great feeling for their characters.

Helen, who has so far only worked for Scythe, and only lived for the guy finally realizes that there is someone else who cares for her. It must have been a complete shock for her to learn how far Reiji is willing to go for her, even to the point of throwing his entire past away. It turns out that the only reason she appeared so strong in front of Reiji was because Scythe ordered her to.

I was also really surprised at how early Scythe managed to find Helen, and how easily Inferno tracked down Reiji and that they showed hardly any mercy to them. Reiji got punched over and over in order to get information out of him, while who knows what happened to Helen after Scythe found her. The next episode should prove to be yet another treat. There’s no doubt that Reiji is going to succeed in killing Scythe, but just imagine what kind of effect that would have on Helen. I can’t wait!

Rating: ** (Excellent)
A very quiet episode, but Reiji and Helen made it worth every single second.

  1. Finally they’re going to the second arc in Japan. It should be 1-9 phantom arc, 10-18 1 year after in Japan, 19-24 finale

This, I think, surpasses the VN easily. And surpasses anyone’s expectation – a real treat in the season, yet unwatched by majority.

The hardest characterization (without backstory / past) always be the silent type chara. This might be a memorable mafia anime (the irreplaceable should be Gungrave, that’s like the Godfather, anime-version)

  2. There’s no doubt that Reiji is going to succeed in killing Scythe, but just imagine what kind of effect that would have on Helen. I can’t wait!
===> Oh I’m excited to see that!!!

Subs spell Ein’s new name as Eren, some spell it as Elen, my guess it’s Ellen then you spell it as Helen. o_O *confused now*

  3. Sapphire: the thing is that Reiji simply pronounced something in Katakana, which can be heard in many different ways. I found “Helen” to be the most likely, but in Japanese “Helen”, “Ellen” and “Eren” all sound the same.

  4. I think that Helen & Reiji were found so easily by phantom & co because of Reiji’s newfound empathy… where he fails to kill the guys he beat up, just a neat bit of symbolism.

And as to why he is beat up I think it’s all McCunnen’s plan tbh because she knows that Scythe is going to betray inferno and Reiji & Ein are quite close, so she just gives Reiji an option and then closes off that option quickly. Something to do with that massive drug deal with the other guy probs. Now she says the only alternative he has left to kill Scythe, so it was probably her plan

  5. All Ein/Eren basically said in this episode was “I have nothing” – and everything else she said was just another mode of that sentence. All Zwei said was “you have a past. Keep on living.” Something that could all been said in 5 seconds was given 20 minutes to be said… talk about poor planning of dialogue. Yes, I know things need be prolonged to give the dialogue more emotional weight… but this was just overkill.

  6. @ trees – hummm lol thats stupid… I mean, what did you expect?

    “I have nothing left”
“You have a past, keep on living”
“Oh sure, Ill just magically change my mind after hearing that for no reason”

    /episode over

She needs time to sort her feelings, and thats what the episode is about

With these last 2 episodes Phantom overtook Eden of the East for me… Im loving the quiet moments between Ein and Zwei alot more than the previous episodes where they just slaughtered whoever they were told to over and over

  7. So far the series has gone really well. Slowly and loyally to the visual novel. Though, Scytche’s abuse of Ein could have been removed even though it existed in VN.

I am a little worried how this will end. Phasing has been good, but if the series is only thirteen episodes long and Cal hasn’t yet to be introduced, the ending may not be Ein’s. I really hope they get to Japan and have the classic fighting(s) in the end.

  8. @Frost. “what did you expect?” – lol, what a stupid question. I obviously expected something more – if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be commenting.

You’re not justifying everything – you’re just further proving my point – why on earth did the audience need to watch her explain her inadequacy for 20 minutes… (as I’ve said before, this was overdone)

  9. Well I guess its just a matter of taste, I love this kind of episode, slow and more psychological… Since I love that kind of anime in general, much much better than the fast paced action of previous episodes which was kinda empty… I think if youre watching Phantom as just an action series its the wrong choice

Im in it for the chemistry between Ein and Zwei, so the more focus and development on them the better

Also ugh, the anime will be 26 episodes not 13 o_o 13 would be incredibly short for a series like this

  10. How they handle the second chapter of the series could make or break the series for me. Having read the original visual novel, the second chapter of the story is really when it branches out from the generic mafia type genre we see a lot these days.

So far they’ve done an amazing job animating the first chapter and even adding a lil bit of their own spice into the mix developing the main characters. Hopefully my favorite character gets his/her money’s worth in screen time later on.
