Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders – 02

We can never quite get rid of magic fights at a school, now can we, Jojo. Ah well, I forgive it this time, just due to how hilarious it looks seeing these ridiculously bulky men walk around pretending to be high school students. It’s just so over the top, and yet Jojo sets itself apart from the other show about bulky men by focusing on the details, like serving tea, attacking with ballpoint pens and involving plenty of people who don’t have special powers. This alternation between ridiculously strong and weak builds tension, and that’s something that Jojo already figured out in its first season, and most other shounen have quite a bit of trouble with.

Also, Jojo: 2 minutes of recap at the start of an episode is not cool. Right now this show is fine because the stuff it recaps is awesome, however it should take note that if this show were ever to go slightly downhill, that would become an extra nail in its coffin. I noticed it especially with Space Brothers.

But yeah, this episode was really excellent. I now remember again why I can’t watch another action series anymore. They all just pale in comparison to what this show has to offer. The action knows exactly how to elicit adrenaline. The build-up of tension is just perfect and they bring out energy perfectly. Action in other series just pales in comparison unless you get something really good like Shingeki no Kyojin, so I’m totally not considering good action a reason to watch a show anymore.

One strange thing that I did note about this episode was that the powers of the villain were a bit vague: first he was like “I have painting powers!”, but after that he switched over to body control, and then he had giant plasma beams. That’s not necessarily bad though. The big problem that a lot of shounen series make is that they give a lot of villains one gimmick and nothing else, while making the main character the most well-rounded of the bunch (heck, even Kill la Kill did that at times…). This guy just too has a bunch of different talents that he uses.

And speaking of the devil, I’m just going to say it: I’m enjoying these first two episodes much more than what I did with Kill la Kill…

  1. I don’t think the painting or the marionette actually have anything to do with Kakyoin’s stand powers, that’s just him showing off his fabulous hobbies lol. I agree that the recaps are unnecessary, but aside from the upcoming exposition, I can assure you that it’s all uphill from here.

  2. Pretty sure the marionette was just for show. As for how he hurt Jojo while painting. I assume his stand struck him from afar as he made the stroke.

    1. Yup. From what I know, his stand is used to test or scout enemies by extending and/or shooting emerald splash from afar. The painting thing wasn’t a technique, but a symbolic demonstration of Kakyoin’s control over his stand. His stand specializes in stealth for this reason, and allows him to attack the enemies unnoticed. That sounds like the perfect explanation for what happened, so I’m going to go with it.

      1. Guys. It’s Jojo. This is a show with a robotic nazi, a man making a hangglider out of leafs in a millisecond and someone getting the crap kicked out of them by a guy using nothing more than a coke can.
        Logic is not necessary.

I hate to admit it but Psgels is right about enjoying these more than kill la kill. I did too. Jojo manages to capture the feeling consistently to enjoy these kinds of shows when Kill la kill could only manage it from time to time.

        1. Um, I wouldn’t say it’s unimportant at all. It’s a weird integrated part of the manga that works. Without the explanation for stuff you would never understand or know what all these weird powers are, and knowing them is really interesting because they get…crazy.

All the exposition from the first season is one reason I actually found it kind of…boring. I know that sounds blasphemous, but I honestly did find it a bit stale, despite it working in the manga. I haven’t watched stardust yet, but I have read it, and I know what I’m saying is a contradiction but that’s just how I feel 🙂

Anyways, the source material is great, I’m sure I will enjoy it (although I did say that about S1…)

        2. Well It’s painfulyl obvious that Kill La Kill was simply trying to hard. . .but forgot a lot of the simple things that make shows relyl great and epic: Character development. They were focusing too much onWOWing people with flash, but really just had no substance. I actaully didnt even finish watching the show (I think I stopped once the main character went to the evil side for an episode) . . .I Just couldn’t bring myself to care really.

  3. Also, regarding the school fights with magical powers thing, this part of jojo was originally serialised around 1989. It wasn’t quite as tired a trope at the time.

  4. Maybe it’s just me but I prefer the serious tone of the previous OVA Stardust Crusaders over the tv series. Granted I still enjoy it but the characters and everything in general had more tension and excitement to me.
