I must praise David Production for this series, by the way. When the promo art of this series was first shown, there was one big fear I had: how on earth are they going to be able to animate those character-designs? It’s a problem that graces many series of its kind: having character-designs that are so complex that they become hard to animate. And well… they did it. They found a way to make these character-designs work. Sure, the animation is not fluid at all, and this show is full of distorted faces, but the camera work is fast enough that this hardly stands in your eye. I’ve seen so many series with elaborate character-designs that look weird, just because the animation can’t keep up, so it’s great to see a show actually succeed in this.
One point of criticism would be that the creators were really, really heavily hinting at Zeppeli’s death this episode. It was over the top and glorious as always, but my favorite kinds of deaths are the ones you don’t see coming: the kinds of accidents that just come out of nowhere, like what you’d expect death to do in these kinds of action series. I understand why the creators did it in this way though; this is just a personal pet peeve of mine. Either way though, his death was just brutal, geting cut in half like that.
This episode also was full of crazy powers, with the zombie with the giant tongue and the sadistic Dio that forced a mother to eat her own son. Seriously? Did this really air in Shounen Jump? The gore scenes unfortunately couldn’t make it fully into the anime, which makes me wonder what the difference is between the censorship laws: are the broadcaster more likely to get into legal trouble? Or was this just something that the animators couldn’t handle? In this show that’s something that I actually doubt, considering the detail they put in the rest of the frames. I also love the elaborate and crazy poses that were shown throughout this episode.
Rating: 5.5/8 (Excellent)
WSJ doesn’t exactly have any strict limits to brutality, and probably had even less of it in time Phantom Blood was being published. I think this is mostly Mangaka’s choice on how much brutality will be in their chapters (from Manga I read, Nurarihyon no Mago had quite a few brutal scenes after the Kyoto arc and even in the latest chapter where half of a girl’s face was blown up).
The soundtrack is still so good.
you will never see the scene where danny burns to death animated, other than that , all the guro here was shown was in Shounen Jump. One of the reasons I enjoy araki’s guro is well… it’s pretty damn bizarre itself. it’s some pretty fabulous and freaky guro if anything. most memorable examples would probably be the Metallica and tubular bells, while more odd examples would include pearl jam, yoyoma, and grateful dead. other than that, prepare for more fabulous guro!
oh wow, they even animated in the mancats…
The baby-eating scene was in the manga and it was graphic, no off-screening or implications made.
also Iwasaki Taku confirmed for doing the music for part 2
My favorite part was Speedwagon after they exited the chamber when he was talking about how Jojo and he had changed after those events… I couldn’t help but yell “All you did was take his hat!”
I guess I’ll drop this soon. The first two episodes were interesting, but after that this hasn’t been enjoyable to follow. Why the series rates every week as well? More story and character development, less boring and non-meaningful action please.
Part 1/Phantom Blood is literally just tough dudes punching vampires to death. It’s also almost over. Part 2 and beyond is when things are expanded beyond just fighting, and the battles become much, much more clever. All in all, PB is the worst part of JJBA, and Part 2/Battle Tendency is better in pretty much every way.
Just hang in their, this arc is nearing its completion if the beginning of the next one doesn’t renew interest, there’s not much hope for you
second arc marks the beginning of probably the most wacky jojo, along with lots of other bizarre shit, including god tier hard gay antagonists… who aren’t gay… but will probably make you gay anyways.
other than that, one of the major aspects that made jojos respected, is its fights, which after 100 volumes, still doesn’t really fall into the bullshit that most shonen manga go into. Even in the first part, you’ll find an odd sort of creativity in the fights. If you’re expecting an mc who simply beats up the antagonist in an overly flashy manner, while stating that his strength comes from friendship, or a mc who gains a new form in the middle of a fight, then you’re in the wrong place.
also please clarify on “boring and non meaningful action”
Fights would be ok, if they had more substance. At the moment, I am not really connected with the main characters. I don’t care who dies or who survives. So I hope more balancing between character/plot development and fighting.
But if the part 2 is better and starts soon, I guess I could still follow this a little more.
Studio has already confirmed Part 2/BT starts at episode 10, so already almost there. They also confirmed Taku Iwasaki (Soul Eater, Gurren Lagann, Jormungand) is taking over music duties, which I’m pretty hyped for.
Part 1 is definitely the shortest arc. It’s like 47 chapters. For comparison, P2 is 67 or so chapters while P3 jumps up to about 150 and the rest are the same or larger.
Can’t wait for the Stands! oraoraoraora!
