Les Miserables – Shoujo Cosette – 21

This episode introduced the third major arc in Les Miserables, and it already shows that the overall mood is going to be very different from the previous one. While the previous arc had a lot of tension, most of it was sortof silent. There weren’t many direct conflicts, and it was basically a big cat and mouse game, while Jean and Cosette got to know each other a bit better. The current arc, however, places Javert out of the picture again, brings back the Thenardiers (yay!), and shows that Marius has quite an interesting background. Most of the episode was focused on the latter, by the way. Cosette meanwhile says goodbye to one of her major friends she met in the monastery, and starts thinking about her future because of this, while Jean watches. Marius, however, gets really fleshed out in this episode, after being introduced in the previous one. The dialogue on that part was a bit difficult, but this is what I got out of it: His father was a major officer in Napoleon’s army. His uncle is a high-ranked official in Paris, with whom he currently lives with, along with his aunt. I didn’t see any signs pointing to some kind of mother of his, so I assume she died early. The reason why he lived with his uncle, instead of his father probably is because of his father’s position. It’s perfectly possible for him to have no time at all to take care of his child, so he sent him to his brother to take care of. Well then, Marius hated his father, simply because he never heard anything about him. No letters, nothing. It turns out that his uncle kept burning the letters that Marius’s father sent (similar to Cosette, now that I think about it). As for the reason why, if I’m not mistaking it’s because his father worked for Napoleon. I can imagine that people would feel bad to be associated with such a person, which is why Marius’s uncle decided to keep him away from his father. Then, at this episode, Marius’s father dies. Only then does his uncle inform him about his state, and then Marius finds out what his father really thought of him (he’s actually been dying, wanting to see him, pun not intended). An argument follows, and Marius decided to run away from home to… the Thenardiers!? What? Only now I realize that Thenardier was in the army, and fought in the battle of Waterloo as well. It makes perfect sense now, and the picture they’ve always had hanging above their door shows him, together with Marius’s father in a rather dramatic way. It seems that Marius is planning to meet him, in order to find out the truth about his father, and what he was really like. The Thenardiers, meanwhile, finally seem to have been defeated by their money-problems, and are forced to move out of their house. It’s great to see them actually back again. The question remains, though: how will the Thenardiers bring Cosette and Marius together? With Jean, this anime has already proved that it’s different from most other anime by not making haste when bringing characters together (unlike other anime, who most of the times wrap up the introduction of a new side-character in the same episode he or she was introduced in). This episode truly was excellent, and to think that the current arc has only just begun.]]>

  1. Marcus lived with his grandfather, because it is his grandfather who wanted it, since Marcus father was a shame for his family: he choose to join Bonaparte while the Pontmercy are a noble family (they are with the king).
His grandfather is a truly powerful man, and he did everything he could to keep Marcus father away.
The miserables take place in an era called “restauration” while the former king had come-back to power after Napoleon defeat, thanks to the british.
Thenardier was under Pontmercy’s (the father) order in the army, after a battle where Pontmercy was criticaly wounded he checked his body to see if he had any gold but it turned out he was still alive and thought that Thenardier saved him. He told it to his Marius, who thinks he has a life-debt to Thenardier.
After this arc, they will be actually two more Arc which will bring the true greatness of Les misérables hopefully.

  2. Well, from what they showed of Eponine in past episodes, and what they are showing now, I think they are going to have the musical Eponine and the Thenardier from the book. (Eponines my favorite)

  3. Cos: ah, thanks for clarifying. I’m really looking forward to the start of these last two arcs.
Dorthey: have there then been differences between the Eponine from the book and the musical? Also, doesn’t regular Media Player Classic or Windows Media Player work for you?
Dokers: I’m afraid you’re going to wait a bit more. Unfortunately, series like this one take a few days before someone posts them on Tokyo Toshokan, unlike all the popular series. I got my version from the program Share.

  4. The trick is to use the Japanese titles, not the English ones. So, in the case of Les Miserables, it would be:
    レ・ミゼラブル 少女コゼット

  5. I tried that, but only Episode 22 is showing up; are there any specific nodes one has to use or something? I’m afraid I’m rather new to Share. ^^;

  6. Hmm, just go to a site with nodes and copy about twenty to thirty of them into Share.
By the way, did you enable port-forwarding on your router?

  7. Okay, will do.
Er…no, probably not. How would I go about doing that?
(Sorry for bugging you like this, by the way. o.o;)

  8. I see. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s a write-up for my router – guess I’ll just stick to torrents for now. xD; It’s a pity – I’m missing episodes 6, 7, and 17. Ah well – thank you very much for your time!

  9. Marius’s outfit in this episode and 22 always, without fail, leaves meh laughing hysterically. It’s just so incredibly….insane. Couple that with his scowling expressions and the effect is….amazing. *watching bits and pieces of 21 again, and laughing hysterically over Marius’s expressions*
At least he’s cute as a keed.

  10. In the book Eponines a very minor charactor, her only point is to bring Marius and Cosette together, and there isn’t a lot of depth to her. All we know is she is in love with Marius, but she is rather selfish about him ,as she well, in a later part of the book she tries to get them both to die so they can be together at the barricades. All I’ll tell you is that Marius is involved with the start of the French Revolution.
Musical Eponine on the other hand, is selfless and actually becomes one of the main women in the story. She has a lot of charactor and a heart breaking love for Marius. There is a lot more too it, so you should see it or watch some scenes on youtube. And she definatly dosn’t trie to “lovingly” kill Marius. But it is tragic. Again, French Revolution. Poor Gavroche….

  11. Eponine in the musical, I think, is very close to Eponine in the book. Only Eponine is a little less honorable in the book. In the musical, they only include the good deeds she did. She was in trouble a lot with the law in the book… But it’s fairly close. I want to download this series, but… eh! I can’t get it. Parental Filters and such.

  12. Does anyone know where there are episodes that
are available for download subbed or not towar
ds the second part of the series up to the bar
ricade chapters? The barricade chapters are th
e ones I want more though.

  13. are there any episodes besides 1-7 subbed in english? i’ve tried it with the Japanese title and i’m getting nowhere. SO any information would be helpful!

  14. just to clear this up… this isn’t about the French Revolution. it’s about a very minor rebellion that came after the French Revolution, 40 years later actually. I thought some of you had read the book???
