You know what? Who cares about the cheese! There is good cheese and bad cheese, while most of it falls into the bad category: overblown and overly sappy drama that you just can’t take seriously. There are cases in which the cheese is meant to be overly emphasized and becomes awesome to watch because of that (any Hiroshi Watanabe-series, especially Suteki Tantei Labyrinth), and there’s a very select amount of series in which the cheese is actually played straight… and yet somehow works. And what do you know: for me, 07-Ghost turned into one such series. The bond between Teito and Mikage really was adorable, despite the sappiness of it all.
I must say that I really feared the worst when I was spoiled about how Mikage was going to reincarnate. I was ready to expect a very overdrawn death scene of his… only for him to get back to life at the last possible moment. But really, the creators handled his resurrection very well: I never expected the bugger to return as a stuffed animal-like creature. And with the church and all, the whole reincarnation fits perfectly into the setting. I’m usually very much against it when anime bring back a dead character, because it often nullifies any sort of impact that their deaths would have had, but here you can still see Mikage’s sacrifice.
And on a completely different note: the animation sure was awesome in this episode. I don’t mean that in the same way as Eden of the East, in which there was a lot of detail in just about every movement, but there were so many creative poses and camera-angles. This episode had lots of really cool shots that really made this episode a feast for the eyes.
Now that the Mikage-arc is over, I’m curious to what the rest of this series can offer. It’s really building up Ayanami as some evil overlord, but thankfully the creators fleshed him out nicely enough. In fact, I’m always waiting for the guy to make his move again, because whenever he does you can be sure that it’s going to result in a very interesting and exciting fight. As a villain, he has presence, I guess.
Rating: ** (Excellent)
As a series with a lot of emphasis on building up, the climaxes are of course very much worth it. Also, the animation direction was really good.
I agree with you on that 07 Ghost really isn’t living up to my high expectations (the manga is much better in terms of art and plot…) but I can’t say it’s bad either. The cheese is okay, and typical- but at least they don’t go overboard with it like they did in Valkyrie Chronicles. Mikage reincarnated as a pink dragon was cute. 😀
As for future plot- if they’re going with the manga, and not some fillers, we’re going to meet Hakuren and more priests…and then training time. 😀 That is, if everything goes according to plan. Knowing Studio DEEN and all, we’ll see. I’m not very “happy” with this show, but what goes what goes. eh.
Oppisite of Snowolf, I found this anime adaption so far, very very great. It’s amazing how well done it is! I jsut cannot wait for more!!
I think a good example of cheese would be more of your favorite show Mahou Shoujotai, the optimism can be off putting at first but by the latter half of the series its just become too important 🙂
no such thing as ‘good’ cheese, mate.
oh god I don’t care if people see it as good cheese or bad cheese, those two are freakin’ sweet and best friend drama never fails to touch my heart.
baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww
animation directing in this episode is BRILLIANT *_* overall fantastic. I’m so pleased with this episode and I know next episode will do so as well *_*
I love burupya a lot . . . took too many screencaps of it and Mikage O_O;;;
and of course, the love of my life is still the center of my attention: Mikhail
*only has Mikhail on her head again*
he’s so awesome here *_*
I am impressed with the show so far. The relationships are pretty typical, except for Mikage and Teito, which i liked. The battles are fun to watch, not drawn out and believable with in the setting of the show. Though the fillers were kinda, fillerish, but not the worst i have seen. Overall, the show so far gets a B, enjoyable..
I agree about the animation in this episode (Please, PLEASE let it be this good the rest of the series!) and about the cheese.
It just annoys me how corny it became in the last few episodes-thankfully, though, considering what happens next in the manga, the trend is consistently shifting toward SHEER AWESOMENESS!
At least, I hope so. We just have to pray that the show’s staff can handle Teito’s emo-ness as cleanly as they did Mikage’s reincarnation.
Mikage’s pink and fluffy! So cute!
I don’t really know what to think about 07 Ghost, I would have liked to like it, because DEEN put some effort into it to make this a fun adaption…but still as far as I know they only planned for a 13 Episode series.
This would mean we get another 3 Episodes now, which would make 07 end in a similar dissapointing way like Amatsuki did.
chounokoe: um, where did you read that there were only going to be 13 episodes? According to ANN, the total amount of episodes isn’t known yet, and if there were indeed 13 of them, it would have been known by now.

psgels, I envy you for your… enthusiasm. 07 Ghost is sure one of the dullest things I have ever seen. The way they tell the story is just… cheap. I tried to write a fantasy story myself years ago and now I start to think I should search a publisher, because if this ‘thing’ gets animated… well, my story will be a bestseller 😀 Just joking. But I get the impression the mangaka didn’t had a concept to begin with. She (or he) just… tried to make a fantasy story. One idea then leaded to the next one etc. At the end she (or he) probably had some luck and everything got together somehow. When it comes to storytelling I amdire anime like Ergo Proxy (an anime you have to watch twice to be able to really appreciate its greatness and watch three times to understand it), Night Head Genesis, some episodes of Jigoku Shoujo… well, that are different genres, I know.
Anyway I watched today episode 9. What happend there? I can’t even remember, perhaps because I felt asleep halfway. I wanted to drop this anime after episode 6, I didn’t. But now I do, after seeing Mikage returning as a strange little something. Oh, it’s pink.
Don’t ask me what my point is. I don’t know it myself. Perhaps I am just a little upset, because I think some ideas in this show are nice, and the mangaka (I don’t blame the creators even though it seems the manga is better) could have done much more with it.
By the way: I would like to know why japanese people use so often german words in their anime. And they do such a bad job with it. I remember a country named “Kuchen” in “Meine Liebe” – no comment. And “Frau” is the most absurd name I have ever heard, it sounds just incredible strange, not to mention that it means “woman”. Oh, and today I have watched an anime where a guy was named “Lohengramm” – OH MY GOD… Such things show me that they have no feeling for the german language. If it would be even funny, but sadly it’s not 🙁 It’s just incredible akward.
